Solo canoe camping for one night on the Au Sable River in Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula… Music: Telecasted - Savior Chris Haugen - Snowy Peak Pt. 1
Glad I found your channel! I loved my camping trips up into the U.P. Started as a kid canoed all over the place. Memories made you will never forget! You have over 2k subscribers with just four videos. Your fishing skills may need work but your videos are good!
Good for you for packing out other peoples trash and spreading the message to pack in pack out! Some people just suck and take nature for granted. I'm glad to have stumbled upon your channel. You seem like a good role model for not only young women, but for anyone young or old that may be intimidated by solo adventures in nature. Also, that breakfast looked absolutely delicious lol.
I was for a while. When I first started I literally wouldn’t sleep for the entire night 😂 I’ve actually slept pretty well my last few trips but it definitely took some getting used to. Now I know for next time!
Great video again. I love you are out there and just doing it and figuring it out. Many people get paralyzed and don't try things. I have been on the Ausable as well. I ran the river from Mio to Loud Dam in 3 days 2 nights. On one of your trips there, start up river, No motor boats and much more peaceful. Always willing to give you some tips and camp site/trip locations
Thank you!! I usually have the opposite problem where I get myself into situations that might be a little above my capabilities so Im trying to do more small trips like this to build up the big ones! I do hope to do a longer Au Sable trip in the future. Thank you for that advice! My one issue with the area was the amount of motor boats but it was Father’s Day weekend so I think there were even more than usual. I was concerned about being able to paddle upstream but I would love to go back and stay on the river vs another one of the ponds
I love this video. I couldn’t imagine how the wind would be paddling out there!! But the beauty of that camp site, so peaceful and so many hammock spots!! Love the video
It was awesome for you to finally have some non-windy conditions. It’s inspiring to see a young gal throw caution to the wind and venture out on these excursions to enjoy and experience Michigans great outdoors. I’ve been in my own head for about 6 years now to get out and enjoy camping Michigan. I can say I’m finally going to do that this summer and fall. Thank you!
Thank you for watching! I plan to stick with it. Despite things not working out how I want them to all of the time I’m having a lot of fun. You have a wonderful day yourself 😊😊
I’m really enjoying your videos. While documenting your adventures, you capture both things that go well along with those that show more of the learning process, which is so cool. I look forward to seeing more of your trips.
@@Apeaceofthewoods Your videos are great reminders of how we all learned in the outdoors. I grew up exploring the Hiawatha National Forest in Mackinac County back in the 1960-70s. It was such an awesome playground for me.
I Enjoyed your video .. Happy that you fixed your fishing problem .. Meal looked delicious .. Good luck on your next fishing trip .. Beautiful camping spot ..!! Thanks 👍😊
It sounds like you're still learning. Which is really cool. I'm going to enjoy seeing you on your journey. I hope you just fall in love with this lifestyle. We're always learning. That's just part of the fun.
I learned by doing and have probably had the same difficulties camping and canoeing you’ve had. I’m glad to see a young woman like you learn camping skills. Great videos.
Thank you for letting me know that! It’s a relief to hear you went through some of the same difficulties so I know it’s not just me. Makes me feel like I might actually know what I’m doing one day 😂
You bring back memories 🙂 My family is Jamaican, and when I younger my father used to take me camping in Grayling. I remember having so much fun on the Au Sable river!
Hi little lady it's Tony I have a few suggestions tie your hair back around the fire just in case of a flare up get a lighter that you would use for a grill with the long stem easy to light fires no burning of fingers lol and put something under your tent cuz the ground is damp and in time will start to eat up the bottom of it and it will also keep the dampness from coming up and in the floor even like a painter drop cloth also maybe a tarp over the tent just over the top and extending out so if it rains you can still go out a little bit enjoy
Wow just the thought of what you just said and my hair going up in flames 😳 thank you for the suggestions ☺️ I brought a ground sheet with me…I just didn’t end up using it. I need to make sure I do though. Definitely would have been nice to have a tarp up over my tent on my last trip. Doing that in the future for sure. I did some camping this winter and the long lighter wouldn’t work in the cold…I switched to matches and then the bic. I should bring back the long lighter. Thanks again 😊
Great videos, young lady! They make me feel like I can smell the Pine Trees, and the clean Northern air, again! I need complete knee replacement surgery, on my right knee, so I don't move through the trees, like a ghost anymore. I can tell that it makes my old Army buddy sad! I enjoy seeing that you have an adventurous spirit! It would make me feel better if you had a reliable partner, to share your adventure's with. But, I know that finding a good friend, who shares your passion for these trips, is hard to find. A safety in numbers, kind of thing. Someone who doesn't complain much, if at all! I'm really glad that I found your site, and have subscribed! I'm glad that you love our beautiful state of Michigan, and can get out in it, as much as you're able too! Thank you, for sharing your adventure's with the rest of us! Take care of yourself, dear lady!
Aww thank you ☺️☺️ I’m happy I can bring the Northern air to you. My grandpa had knee replacement surgery. It’s a tough surgery but he was happy he got it! Not too many people I know want to sleep outside in a tent so I’m content getting out on my own…I was nervous at first but I’ve grown to love it! I’m so happy to have you as a subscriber. Thank you for following along. You take care of yourself too!
Thank you for the encouragement! They got me setup, now it’s up to me to practice before I get back out there. 😂 I don’t blame you. I debated doing it for for a while before I just decided to use a couple sticks and get rid of it lol
Thats a great area with no cabins on the dam pond and only 1 access so its not too people'y. Other than the lunch crew anyway. Northwoods is a really good store and great people too. When I go there I try not to get a cart so that way I only buy what I can carry😅. I enjoy your channel and your can do attitude. Time spent outdoors like this adds years to your life and life to your years, thanks for sharing!
Haha it was a beautiful area and less people’y than some of the other ponds from what I hear. I can only stop at Northwoods on the way home from a trip because I never spend less than an hour in there 😂. I appreciate you watching and for the kind words ☺️
Great video! The AuSable is one of my favorite rivers to paddle, defiantly a good choice. If you have not done so yet, you should consider paddling the Manistee River. It is very scenic with a decent of camping options.
13:45 had me remembering when I was on the early arrival crew to build a camp at Burning Man and our 50 x 50 kitchen tent went walk-about in 70+ MPH winds before we had it fully staked down. Your vidz make me hungry so now it is time to cook. Happy holidays/holly daze to all.
I recently noticed your channel. Welcome to the world of canoe tripping and good luck with your channel. The more you do it, the easier it gets. Watching the pros like Xander Budnick, Lost Lakes, Canoe the North, etc, will give you lots of ideas. You're doing good though. Keep it up.
Thank you!! I watched your Craig lake video where you paddled the Peshekee before going there! I learn a little bit with each trip, and from watching experts like yourself and the ones you mentioned
Perfect camp site! And you cooked some good looking food. Try running lone underneath bail then up through the guides. Once you get the basic concept then you'll start catching fish.
Anyone mentioned yet that your bravery probably inspires people nice to see someone enjoying themselves and learning along the way. If I were your friend I would weld you a custom roof rack the straps inside the car seemed temporary
Aww that’s a huge compliment and I genuinely appreciate it ☺️. Haha I was wondering if anyone was going to say something about my straps 😂😂 I actually do have a roof rack! For some reason having the straps inside my car vs under the rack gives me a weird sense of security because I can see them and know that they havnt snapped or anything 😂
Looking forward to your next vlog! I agree with your stance on packing out other peoples TP. I will pick up a lot of trash but not that! Although burning on site can be an option.
Thank you!! I should have another video soon ☺️☺️ haha yeah I could have burned it. At the time throwing it in a trash bag felt like the least amount of interaction with it
Welcome to youtube! Cool to see a new content creator showing this beautiful state! Hate to be a condescending "mansplainer" and try to tell you how to use a fishing rod but I can see you've been struggling a bit with it. I'm gonna be in the nordhouse area with my wife and daughter and some friends next weekend and if you are thinking about going out adventuring, the kiddo and I will be tossing a few lines out in the water and you're welcome to join and I'd be happy to help you get that thing dialed in
I appreciate anyone taking time to give me advice because you’re right I have been struggling lol. It’s so kind of you to offer to help. Im pretty far from that area, but I do plan to go somewhere close by to get this figured out before I go camping again 😊
Tip for your struggles in the canoe. Get on your knees in front of your seat and spread them out to the sides of the canoe when paddling, especially when windy. This will give you a lower center of gravity, making it more stable, and easier to dig deep with paddle. Also at the end of paddle stroke turn paddle sideways like a rutter to control direction, gives you ability to paddle one side instead of constantly swithching. Hope this helps. Great job otherwise.
I will definitely try this next time. I’ve seen people paddle through rapids that way so makes sense! Hopefully I can also figure out how to do the J stroke. I really appreciate the help 😊😊
This is such a great video! I'm so glad to find another paddler that camps as well! And the river looks like such a beautiful place to explore. I just subscribed!
Nice video! Just found your channel. Looks like you had a wonderful paddle and a gorgeous campout. I need to get my canoe in the water soon. I honestly hate summer because I just don't like the heat, humidity, and bugs, but I do like canoeing. I'm not a big fisherman but I dont like open face reels as they are hard to use. I only have closed face reels and they work great for me. You make some wonderful meals while camping. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day! Marty from Minnesota🙂
Thank you!! Summer is also my least favorite camping season for all the reasons you mentioned but getting out in the canoe makes up for it. I’ve been having issues with both open and closed reels so I think at this point I just need to get out and practice . I appreciate you watching. I hope to make my way to the boundary waters one day 😊
well done! (I would have burried the poop).. js. Nice to see young people getting out and enjoying our great state (I sub all the Michiganders I come across). Originally from the Detroit metro area, I spent a lot of time up north hunting and fishing. as life progressed and work and family took over, I didn't get to do as much. now they are all up and married off and I get to do more outside again with the grands. I have found I enjoy the upper west side of the state a little more than the upper east side. Needless to say, the entire state is a great place to get out and adventure. keep em coming!
Thank you for subbing and following along ☺️I’m happy to hear you’re getting out there again. It can definitely be tough to balance with work and other life obligations. I need to check out more of the west side of the state!
Those little birds would get so excited and chirpy any time I’d paddle near. I think they were nesting in the grassy areas of the pond. Loved them, they were fun to watch
drifting with half a night crawler approx 1-2 ft off bottom is a very reliable technique on the lakes in this system. Just use enough weight to keep your line hanging as straight down as possible. Splitshot sinkers make managing this easier. Perch Rigs are also good.
Good to know! I did get some night crawlers at Northwoods and they showed me how to do a perch rig. I’ll have to look into split shot sinkers. Thank you for the advice!
You may have some deficiencies in your fishing technique (you will improve!), but you definitely have the wilderness cooking down. Your meals look amazing!
1:58, you have conquered your worst fear :)! At 5:44 you mention that maybe you get lucky and meet a fisherman that can help you out with the fishing pole, but the guys having lunch at your booked campsite were right there. I guess that as a woman you'd have to be a bit more careful with approaching people, but it also shows that anxiety prevents most people from actually getting further in life, right? Happy paddling, greets from the Czech forest!
Haha well at the time that they were having lunch I didn’t realize I needed as much help as I did with my reel 😊 Not sure I would have been brave enough to ask them though…especially since they had to rush their lunch because I showed up lol. I was hoping to run into someone else to ask 😂 thank you for watching from all the way in the Czech Forest!
You’re starting off right - by asking the right questions, and seeking out assistance from experienced individuals there at the shop. Those few steps along will make your adventures far more enjoyable long term. So many people try to do this, and fail miserably. It’s not always easy...as some make it out to be. Experiencing the outdoors is certainly a fun thing to do. Always keep in mind the safety factors around fire pits.., while gathering, cutting or chopping wood for your campfire. I noticed a few things in the video that were a bit concerning for a “newbie”. Keep at it...looking forward to the next uploads.
It is fun but definitely has not been easy. Please share your concerns! Especially if I’m doing something that isn’t safe. I’m open to feedback and appreciate the advice. Thank you and thank you for watching!
Haha this is the first time I brought a whole cooler because I didn’t have to do any portaging. I’ll more than likely be eating dehydrated meals on future trips
What a beautiful spot, I have actually stayed in that same section of river You were on. I stayed at 30C, which is on the other side of the dam. I was wondering what that side of the dam looked like. thank you for the video.
It was beautiful. I would love to go back and check out more of the campsites! It seems like there are some really pretty ones along the river where you were at. Thank you for watching 😊
Glad to see you tried a kayak paddle, how do you like it? I use one for my 12' canoe. I am from the Lake St. Clair area, have you seen how many paddle routes that have opened up in the past few years in SE Michigan, it's very nice for day trips, and I think you could even do an overnighter on a few of them.
I like the kayak paddle. I definitely can get around more quickly with it at least until I get better with the single blade. No I didn’t know about any new paddling routes opening up! I have done an overnight at Island Lake Rec area in Brighton at the canoe in campsite and it was nice!
I don't know about your area, but in my area the Conservation department offers several classes in fishing. They love to help people enjoy the outdoors
I am loving your videos so far! Being from central Michigan and spending all the time i possibly can up north especially in the UP you’ve given me some great ideas! You should try the Pretty Lake Quite Area canoe trip its a little ways northwest of Newberry and It’s super beautiful and tranquil! Do you have any other socials I could follow?
Thank you! I’m happy to hear that ☺️☺️ funny my first trip to the UP was at Pretty Lake quiet area. Beautiful place. I went this April when the ice had barely gone out. No one there at all. I imagined it might be hard to get a campsite this time of year…I do plan to go back!
I tried an ugly stick closed rod and reel combo but I think it might have had a knot in it. It was It probably would be a good idea to try one again and see which is easier for me to use before I go on another trip! Thank you!
Well, if you really don't know how to use it is best to ask someone who does know or better, go with someone, and here's the tricky part, get them to watch you try to implement what they have shown you. Some people are very good at imparting their wisdom, sometimes too much of it, but lack the patience to allow you to try and follow what they have shown you, correcting only when needed. Don't underestimate the capacity of stores to sell a batch of dodgy goods, particularly if they are cheap. I went to a good sports shop in France, but this is true of anywhere, and all the glue securing a part of a landing net, on all these nets in stock, were insufficient and would cause the equipment to work at half its true potential. Anyway, I look forward to watching you fish soon. We all have to learn and some take longer than others. What is important is that you enjoy it.
Thanks for the advice! Being new to fishing it’s tough to tell when the issue is me or cheap/dodgy gear. I definitely have some learning to do before I get back out there!
Good for you for cleaning up other's mess! I prob would have put it in the fire and not packed it out...how big is the canoe you use and how do you transport it on the road? Enjoying the videos....
Haha I don’t blame you. I figured I might as well just pack it out since I was already messing with it. It’s a 12ft canoe and weighs about 40lbs. I’ve got a roof rack, so I put it on top of my car and strap it down with ratchet straps and then tie it down in the front and back. Thank you!! I appreciate you watching 😊😊
Love the videos! There is too much line on the reel which is causing the tangles…the line should be an 1/8 or so from the edge of the spool ( the thing the line is on)..
Interesting, I didn’t know they managed it in the past. That’s where I originally was hoping to get a site but they’re tough to get in that area! Most of the campsites on Cook are booked for the rest of the summer
You are doing good for gusts starting out. Your 6 sense will get stronger the more time you spend in nature. An Your doing it in a wonderful place in the world. Keep going an Enjoying it. O an the Toilet paper is Biodegradable lol.
Thank you so much!! Sometimes I wish I could speed up the learning process but I know it will come in time 😊 Haha I probably could have just buried it but I was a little leery of digging anywhere around there lol
Did the fishing pole come with that open faced reel as a combo? The pole looks like a casting rod instead of a spinning rod. You need a spinning rod for that open faced reel.
Yes they came together as a combo but the description does say spinning rod. I ended up getting a different reel for it that I used in my most recent video. It’s a Shimano spin reel. It has a little pull on it for casting to make it easier
@@Apeaceofthewoods Spinning rods usually have a wider "eye" (which is the "eye" closer to the reel on the rod). Anyway, Shimano is a good brand of reel.
@@truax848 ahh I see. Ok well I’m going to see how things go if I tighten the drag. Before the comments I thought the rod was too flexible and that was the problem lol
I’m a new student to fishing, and yea I think you were suppose to put the string through the holes and tie a know to tighten it around the reel I believe that’s that’s the name of it.
3 vids 1k subs and only 3 vids? 1 month? You better get outside more and make more content. Actually you are motivating me to do more solo. I kayak float camp and back pack solo but its been a few. Good stuff.
😊😊😊 I’m happy to hear that, there’s nothing more peaceful than getting out solo. And thank you I’m trying! just got back from a trip so I’ll be able to make another video soon
I don’t enjoy paddling with it as much as a single blade but I’m able to get around more quickly with it. It’s especially helpful to have when its windy
I use the double blade when there is a wind but really enjoy the single blade for regular padding. The fishing pole is the reason I have so many fly rod its always the rod😁. Keep at it.

Subbed for future paddling adventures and yummy camp breakfasteses. 🌲🏕️🔥🛶
Aww thank you!! 😊😊
The Ausable is amazing!
Yes it is!
Looking forward to your next vlog! I agree with your stance on packing out other peoples TP. I will pick up a lot of trash but not that! Although burning on site can be an option.
Thank you!! I should have another video soon ☺️☺️ haha yeah I could have burned it. At the time throwing it in a trash bag felt like the least amount of interaction with it
Welp, I just reserved a spot near there for the fall and I can't wait! Thanks to you!
Oh I’m happy to hear that! I’m sure you’ll love it ☺️ it will probably be even more beautiful in fall
Nice looking meal!
Thank you 😊
This is such a great video! I'm so glad to find another paddler that camps as well! And the river looks like such a beautiful place to explore. I just subscribed!
Aww thank you! Likewise! It looks like you explore some beautiful places as well so I definitely subscribed ☺️
@@Apeaceofthewoods Thank you and thank you so much for stopping by!
I hope to make my way to the boundary waters one day 😊
I really liked the video. Well done. Greetings. Subscribed.
Thank you!!!
I miss the red wing Black birds and grew up with them. I hear them around the around the cat tails. Far into the desert, I never hear them here.
Those little birds would get so excited and chirpy any time I’d paddle near. I think they were nesting in the grassy areas of the pond. Loved them, they were fun to watch
Your a very nice person i will watch your channel Thank you
Aww well thank you! And I appreciate you watching ☺️
The toilet paper... You're a better person than me. Great channel. Keep it up.
Haha don’t give me too much credit. I debated for a while and ultimately didn’t want anyone thinking I left it there. Thank you so much for watching 😊
So fun!
The trip was a lot of fun. Thank you for watching 😊
Boy sorry you had the tp issue. Glad you got Rick helping you-
The tp issue was rough lol. Thank goodness I finally got help lol
drifting with half a night crawler approx 1-2 ft off bottom is a very reliable technique on the lakes in this system.
😂😂😂 My technique needs some work. Thank you!! Cooking comes more naturally to me for sure
Recently found your channel,Enjoying it so far,Will keep checking it out
Well I’m happy to hear that. Thank you for watching!
I like your videos. I'm subscribed
Thank you! And thank you for subscribing 😊😊
I love the au sable
Very beautiful place ☺️
@@Apeaceofthewoods I would ALWAYS use a saw for wood NOT a axe. Axes are dangerous if you are a newbie.
I have a seasonal campsite in Glennie on alcona pond...love that area! New sub here
Nice! Alcona pond looks like the prettiest of the Dam ponds but I havnt been. Thank you so much for subscribing 😊
Really enjoying your videos. Wishing I cooked as well as you at camp!
Thank you for for watching 😊 haha I’ve definitely burnt a few pancakes here and there myself
" Im pretty sure its the fishing pole " ..now thats funny 😁
😂
I need to start canoe camping. I don't get meals that delicious backpacking!
You seem to be kinda real,That’s cool
Thank you 😊
Michigan is the best. Hope you catch a monster fish in your next video!
I agree! Haha I also hope a monster fish is in my future 😊😊
Dad grew up in Grayling, paddled down that river.
It’s such a beautiful river! I want to check out other spots in the future!
I don't know about your area, but in my area the Conservation department offers several classes in fishing. They love to help people enjoy the outdoors
That’s actually a great idea and I didn’t think of it. I just looked and there is one an hour from me this upcoming weekend. Thank you 😊
I am loving your videos so far!
Good job but u should try using a closed face reel set up until u get used to fishing more then get u a nice open face setup
Dude, I really need to hire you as my chef!🤤
😂
Love the videos! There is too much line on the reel which is causing the tangles…the line should be an 1/8 or so from the edge of the spool ( the thing the line is on)..
I found that out later on! That amongst a bunch of other things I was doing wrong. And thank you!!!! 😊😊 I appreciate you watching
That looks so good....🤤 Who cooks like that in the woods?!?!😆
Thank you 😊😊
Erg mooie Plek daar zo bij het water en veel bos er bij
It was a very nice place ☺️
@@Apeaceofthewoods Ja ik zelf ben ook opzoek naar super mooie plekken in de natuur
I camped below cook dam almost every summer when the electric company managed the land around the river and it was free then. nothing free anymore.
Interesting, I didn’t know they managed it in the past. That’s where I originally was hoping to get a site but they’re tough to get in that area! Most of the campsites on Cook are booked for the rest of the summer
❤ I absolutely love 💞 you're adventures!!! I totally would go with you anytime!!!
Aww thank you ☺️☺️☺️
❤
what campground is that? looks very nice
This is one of the Au Sable River dispersed campsites. This one was on Loud Pond. The campsite was really really nice
Hola saludo de chile
Best camp meal I've ever seen!
Wow what a compliment. Thank you!
Fun channel
Thank you for watching 😊
I love the UP too! What an adventure! From the UP or lower?
I live in the Lower. My first trip to the UP was in April and I’ve been living in Michigan for 8 years!
I have family in the Muskegon area
I thought I got one with the knot already tied, but I’m pretty sure I did quite a few things wrong lol
Hey it’s all a learning experience. You’re doing great and can’t wait for you next video
I have been fishing since I was 4 or 5 and still make mistakes. Its all good tho…just have fun!
Was that the tent that almost got away lol 😉
Yes lol
How do you like the double blade ?
I don’t enjoy paddling with it as much as a single blade but I’m able to get around more quickly with it. It’s especially helpful to have when its windy
I use the double blade when there is a wind but really enjoy the single blade for regular padding. The fishing pole is the reason I have so many fly rod its always the rod😁. Keep at it.
Looks like a Matt Posa meal!
Huge compliment. He’s a big inspiration!
U R the woman I've always dreamed of... would love to show you how to fish... keep on adventuring.❤❤❤
Thank you!!
