It's not the Ugly Stick, it's your reel and winding technique. Wrap your index finger over the line in front of the reel. That will help keep the line straight when it goes on the spool. Beautiful country, you've inspired me to explore more of the UP.
I just figured out I’ve been wrongfully blaming my fishing poles and most of my issues have been user error 🤦♀️. Thank you for the advice and the comment ☺️ the UP is absolutely beautiful
You should definitely visit if you can. Not sure how far the drive is for you but it was almost 9 hours for me and still worth it. Especially if you love Kayak camping 😊
I'm always fascinated by some of the gems that show up on my feeds; I was just in the UP last month rockhounding in the Kewanee peninsula and your video reminds me of how absolutely gorgeous the entire area is. . My experiences up there suggest that some of the insects have been trained to fly in squadrons and attack in highly synchronized formations! . For what it may be worth, I nominate you for having the best hair of any YTer.
This was the furthest West I’ve been in the UP and I was amazed at how beautiful the area is. I only wish I could go more often! 😂😂 I noticed the same thing! I didn’t get many bites thankfully, but I definitely inhaled a few squadrons This comment really made me laugh 😂😂 I appreciate the compliment 😊😊 Thank you so much for watching!
freaking so jealous of you!!! This is how many family did vacations when i was a kid back in the 70's. Remote. Canoe with your gear to a quiet place somewhere in Canada, or the UP....camp; explore; laze around; no agenda....for me, the nighttime was the best. Still lake. loons. A canopy of stars....keep getting out there and BE SAFE!!!!
Thanks for posting your adventure! Reminded me of a few solo camp/canoe trips I did in the UP. Feels like another world right here in our home state. So beautiful. And Yoopers are such a friendly bunch!😄 From other comments, it sounds like you’ve moved on from that bait casting reel. The trick with those is you can’t have any slack in the line when reeling in. Just pulling the line up and away while reeling to keep tension will do the trick. Spinning reels (open faced) offer their own quirks. Practice makes perfect (almost), just like most things in life.🙂 Good luck and have fun out there!🎣🛶🏕️
Ohh ok that makes sense. That’s how you keep tension on the line. I did get a different type of open real with a button for casting to make it easier and it seems to be working for me 😊 Yoopers are literally the friendliest bunch! Thank you so much for watching and for the advice!
That area has some an interesting history. A large chunk of property was sold to the state by the Miller family, as in Miller High Life beer. The property included quite a few small lakes. As for the bugs, they can be really bad in May and June, but tend to ease up during the rest of the warm months. There are still two cabins on Craig Lake originally built by the Millers, now available for rent through Van Riper State Park. Nice facilities.
I read a little about it before the trip. Definitely an interesting history! This is my first time experiencing bugs to that extent but they weren’t bad enough to keep me from going back this time of year 😊 I would love to check out the cabins! I’ve seen a few videos of people staying in them and they look like very nice facilities
I think it might be the best campsite there…but I’m sure they’re all beautiful. Well I don’t feel like I missed out as much then. It was still a great trip for me as well 😊
Great videos. It takes a while to learn to use a spin cast rod and reel. Keep trying and before you know it you will be awesome at it. When you feel confident using that you could try a spinning rod and reel or even a fly rod/reel. When I canoe on a lake I always check the winds and try to stay on the windward side of the lake nearer shore. It should be calmer there..beautiful view of the lake from camp!!
The wind has definitely been my biggest challenge! That and figuring out how to fish lol. I’m getting a little better…I just didn’t realize it was more complicated than throwing a hook in the water lol. I really do appreciate all of the advice ☺️
What a great video, I havent been canoe camping in a while, but love the michigan rivers. I think you need a spinning reel for your ugly stick, the reel you have needs tension on the line to get it to reel in. Can't wait to see where you go next. Have you been to the Manistee and Tippy Dam Pond yet?
Thank you ☺️ I got a spinning reel with a little thing that flips to make it easier for beginners lol and that seems to be working better for me. I’ve been to the Manistee River trail but never Tippy Dam and never with the canoe but i absolutely plan to!
caught me by surprise how quickly you recognized the beaver dam for what it was. rotten little beavers have made getting to my cabin a wet excursion sometimes. look into visiting canyon falls not far where you were here in this video.
I saw quite a few of them while paddling so I figured it had to be a dam lol. What a pain lol. How have I not heard of canyon falls? I just looked it up and it looks beautiful! I will check it out one day for sure. Thanks for the suggestion!
I drove out the same way I came in but when I was on the way in I went the wrong way at first…and I think I might have seen the ORV trail before turning around. Craig Lake road I think? The road in was pretty rough!
Ok im jealous that looks like an absolute blast. I could use a weekend like that. Thank u for that video I really enjoyed it. Fyi don't take it wrong but ur absolutely beautiful 😍. If u ever want company on a weekend trip like that I'm in. Love fishing and kayaking too
While I've camped with my family in many Michigan Parks, and have heard of Craig, you did a good job of introducing the area. I'd like to check out these more remote sites & fishing areas... Thanks! *I can look it up, but how easy is it to find open reservation dates?
Thank you!! You should definitely check it out if you get a chance. It’s my favorite place in Michigan so far. It actually isn’t too difficult to find open sites especially compared to some of the parks in the lower peninsula. The best sites do get reserved pretty quickly. I can’t remember if I said which site I was at in the video but I highly recommend site 20 if you can get it!
@@Apeaceofthewoods welcome to Michigan I was born and raised here. I'm a bit older than you are I'm 62. Great video I do worry about you a little bit though. You're very young and pretty please be careful.

Only three videos ! Wonderful . You will be a star in no time . I love our state . We live in such a beautiful place . 🌹
Aww thank you ☺️☺️Michigan is so beautiful We are pretty fortunate to live in such an amazing state
To bad the leadership sucks.
I was born in Detroit. Went to school in highland park. I am now 69 years old. I still love the outdoors ❤
I love that ❤️ I hope to be able to spend time in the outdoors until 70 and beyond

I swear your back country 'camp' meals look better than most of the stuff I get served at restaurants!
Thats such a compliment ☺️ thank you!
Great video! I love that you're highlighting places all across Michigan. There are so many places to explore you have quite a canvas to choose from.
Thank you so much! I’m trying to get to as many places as I can 😊 I appreciate you watching!
Nice job! I love seeing more Michigan camping content.
Thank you!! More to come ☺️

Thank you!! My first time there was in April and I can’t believe I waited this long to start exploring there. Hope you have fun when you go!

Hi :-) took the kids to Craig Lake a few years ago. Awesome experience. Love that you made adobo in the wilderness!!! Very cool…
It’s an awesome place! Nice you were able to bring your family along too! Thank you! Adobo is one of my favorite things to make 😊

Props on using that boat to get there. Windy. Good to see people getting outside. Keep it up.
Thank you ☺️ More people would definitely benefit from getting outside. I appreciate you watching!
some crazy nice private campsites you found. My wife and I are going to try and get some reservations up there. Thanks for the upload.
I’ve been getting pretty lucky lately with campsites. Campsite 21 across from mine also looked really nice! Thank you for the view 😊

ive been going to Craig lake for the past 6/7 years and that campsite is the best one, hands down.
come to think of it, we sat through a tornado at that campsite. Craig lake is unmatched
Well then I feel pretty lucky I was able to get it my first time there! …But a tornado 😱 that is terrifying. What an experience…
I have always think about going on a trip in u p I used live in iron mountain. That looks fun
You should definitely go! It was so much fun! 😊
Love me some Craig Lake. Did you drive the opposite way out or the same way you came in? The other way is an awesome orv trail road

Way too beautiful to be in Michigan camping alone. She must live in the sticks! Awesome to see you enjoy the outdoors!
😂😂 thank you ☺️
Pretty area many pretty places there and Wisconsin where I’m from. Oh I don’t get bit by misquotes either I always found that interesting weird.
It was really pretty. Haha I’ve always thought it was weird too and haven’t met very many other people that mosquitos leave alone
Your food looks yummy 😋
Thank you 😊
The ugly stick is a good fishing rod. It’s the reel that you are using is that is causing you all the problems.
It was also an ugly stick reel. I’m sure it was a combination of me and the reel causing problems lol
Put some tension on line as you reel in
I just figured that out on a trip I did this weekend! I definitely need to practice more before my next trip 😊
I'll be on Au Sable this weekend with a few friends.
@@oakharborgroup-ht8pr I just went this past weekend! Have fun!
Get a drone. They're easy now. Go straight up, spin around, back down. Easy peasy.
I would love to get a drone…if they’re easy. I can definitely see myself crashing it
beautiful lady ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
Thank you 😊
@Apeaceofthewoods you are very welcome. A beautiful lady, who loves camping, canoeing, fishing and is a gourmet cook!! I'm in love! Lol.
Learn to use an open face reel and they are alot more reliable!
Completely agree! That’s what I’m practicing with now
