  • How to Mix Epoxy Resin for Water
    Epoxy resin is a very common material used to model water and I've used it in most of my water videos. It's easier to use than a lot of people think and the key is to measure accurately and mix thoroughly.
    This video shows you how to mix epoxy resin for water perfectly every time. This technique works for Magic Water, Envirotex Lite or other epoxy resins.

    Kathy, I notice in the three example dioramas you showed at the end that the water is dark brown and not clear. Is that because you added brown paint or does it set and lose its "clearity"?

      @KathyMillatt  Před 7 lety +1

      +Christian I do add a few drops of paint. I've used both acrylic and enamel and not noticed a difference. If you add a few drops, it will go muddy but one or two drops and a few pours can build up a semi clear pond. Alternatively, try Tamiya clear paints as they aren't opaque.

    Hi, Kathy,
    I want to make a beach scene diorama, and the water/ocean which is at least 3 to 4 inches deep, and the dimension of the water is approximately 7" x 10". Do you recommend Magic Water to make such large pool of water? Thank you

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  Před 8 lety +1

      Hi Gilbert, I do recommend it for the area but I would pour it in several thin layers. That way, if you have a mix that is slightly off and doesn't set, it's not a major problem. It should also keep the heat down as epoxy resin does heat up when setting. The only thing is that it could be quite expensive.
      If you do decide to use it, let me know how it goes. Kathy

      Thank you for the answer. I am going to submerge half of my painted 1/35 scale model tank into the Magic Water epoxy resin. Will the heat generated from the resin melt my tank? Also will the heat melt the paint?
      Thanks for your time.

      @KathyMillatt  Před 8 lety +1

      +Gilbert Li it is a danger with a large pour but if you stick to several smaller pours, they don't heat up as much. I have heard of melted plastic but personally haven't had a problem because I do stick to thinner layers.

    Thanks so much.
    I'm building my first diorama for a Gundam model and wanted to create a waterfall using my glue gun and dry brushing, but didn't know how to go about making the actual stream part.

    Hi. Time permitting, do You plan to make a video on how to make waves on the epoxy resin? Thank you.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  Před 8 lety +1

      +Frank B Hi Frank, I've semi covered it on my river and canal videos but will be doing real waves when I get on to my ocean section. That needs a bit of work on my layout so it's planned for later this year. The techniques are similar to the rivers but just larger scale.

      +Frank B +Vikki Wilson I haven't seen or heard of them but can imagine that they work very well as the tissue is easy to manipulate into ripples. It's amazing what people come up with.

    Hi Kathy, I have bought some Gorilla Resin Glue. Will this work in the same way?

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  Před 7 lety +1

      Sean Selley-West It's a glue that I have never tried but if it's two part then you mix it the same way. I did use an epoxy resin glue for icicles once but they yellowed quite quickly. I guess glues are not designed to stay clear.

    Thanks for stirring !How would dyes go for colouring like tim holz that is not water-based ? Or modelmates lovely translucent weathering dyes??

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  Před 8 lety

      +Vikki Wilson I have used enamels and acrylics and not noticed any difference between the two. I don't think we are adding enough material to make much of an impact on the resin itself setting etc.

      Let's hope so. I did see Commissar Gamza swish brushes full of dirty washes in his Vallejo (I think) acrylic water. Looked great.

      +Vikki Wilson The dirty brush technique is an oldy but a goody. I love Troels Kirk's use of colour and his water is excellent.

      I'm sorry if that came of a little rough, but it really took away from the point of what you are trying to do. A good example of what folks like to see regarding instruction are videos more straight forward about how to do something.
