This is something riley would be watching on TV before Huey calls him an idiot
And funny enough Riley would like the baby and not realize that he's basically him🤣
I like think Riley has enough common sense to think this show is trash.
Naw. Riley was a fake wannabe gangster. That baby is a real gangsta. Not to say that's a good thing by any means
@@mechajay3358 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Riley?! Common sense?!🤣🤣
😂EXACTLY💯🎯
This show should've been called "HOW THEY SEE US: THE ANIMATION"
Yes
Why would they do that? they need the popular IP in order to bee seen
I keep bringing up Bamboozled, but they should have called it Mantan: Is The Bew Millennium Minstrel Show.
Or Hood Times

Every year Boondocks and Aaron McGruder are missed
John Witherspoon as well RIP
@@raymondjones8672Our love for him will always go "bang, bang, bang" 💙🎵
You beat me to it… I was just thinking this series could have seriously benefited from the creativity and insight of Aaron McGruder

The boondocks was telling you about real stuff that was happening in animated form cant compare this show to The boondocks
If the Boondocks came back they would have torn this garbage apart.
It wasn't garbage to me . I loved it
A Boondocks reboot was on the way a few years ago. It had been announced, a date set, and we even saw artwork. But John Witherspoon's passing seemed to torpedo the whole thing and it just went away quietly
Boondocks would get canceled if it came out today same as family guy these wouldn’t stand a chance 😂
@@BeoDrako How you figure that 🤔?
It's not any different from the Boondocks minus the animesque art style
The fact that they tore down all the high-rise projects in Chicago decades ago lets you know how out of touch this show is! 🤦🏾♀️
Should've just called it "Hood Times"
😂😅😂😅💯
Honestly that could have worked
That's basically what the original was, featuring JJ
People would’ve probably accepted it honestly lol
standing ovation
Dude im not black and from the U.S, and the trailer made me feel offended. Korey is right in saying that this is what everyone outside the U.S think is the Afro- American culture because of Hollywood.
and by extension, people think this is how all black people are... I say this as a Congolese who is way too often associated with the African-American culture, while I do have my own culture and heritage
@emmanuelminga-exogeek2372 yet you're here in America instead of at home in those slums😂😂😂
Actually no. Ive been overseas

Imagine making a show so trash the NAACP had to speak out lol.
The NAACP hasn’t been on our side since the mid 60s
Right the trash NAACP had to come out and give some pillow soft words of rebuke and vanish back into the darkness.

There should be a rule about how low a frame rate can go before we stop calling it animation and start calling it a slide show. This show's animation feels like its still trying to load
It's like it's trying to do the Spider-Verse framerate animation, but it only works there because it's a hybrid of CGI and hand-drawn animation. Here, it just looks like the budget ran out.
Frames per second? More like seconds per frame!
Bows....sir😂😂😂😂
Yeah I know nothing about animation but I was saying this feels lazy and uninspired.

Oh boy, better get the snacks ready for this review. 😂
Funny enough the way characters slide around reminds me of Moon girl and Devil Dinosaur a way better show.
@@bearerofbadnews1375 yes! MoonGirl and Devil Dinosaur is a awesome show
This is one of those shows that thinks its really saying something by calling out urban stereotypes. But instead of being clever it comes around full circle and just comes across as ignorant, krass, obnoxious and explotative
I believe the trope is: Don't shoot the message.
It happens when crappy, mediocre or straight trash end up having a technically correct idea of the topic it wants to tell. Problem is: Sure, he's right, but we're not gonna give him the satisfaction for being right, cuz he's still a douchebag.
I think Netflix saw the hate-watch numbers that Velma pulled, and now they're milking Good Times for ragebait. It doesn't matter if people are watching from anger - views are views. But this is WAY worse than Velma. Good Times was one of the first widely popular cable shows to depict issues facing Black communities, including racism and structurally enforced poverty. Yet it didn't sensationalize or exploit its subject matter. Good Times was about family, resilience, and hope. It relevant when it came out in the 70's and it's still deeply relevant today. Netflix ripping Good Times off for shock value and cheap laughs is just criminal. Horrible.
Good Times wasn't a cable show, it was on CBS in prime time during its initial run.
@@Deadguy2322forreal you read all that and that's all you pulled from it lol
I watched about half of the first episode of Velma. That was enough for me.

They must've watched c oo.n skin and forgot what satire meant.
I *REALLY* wish that that movie had a different title (I call it Harlem Nights because that was Bakshi's name for it). It has a humongous black fanbase.
Yeah got that right in that good times reboot takes the worst parts of Ralph bakshi coonskin and cranked that crap up to 11
I’m glad y’all decided to review this mess cuz I sure wasn’t watching it lol
The drug-dealing baby legit is a 20+ year old infamous Dave Chappelle joke, which most Gen Z probably don't even know...
Exactly
That's why I didn't understand the hate for that but the other criticisms are legit
Well, if you're going to steal, it might as be from the best, I suppose.
the baby on the corner lol. i forgot about that
I'm glad yall watched this shit, because I wrote it off from the trailer.
And the people saying "You only saw the trailer you need to watch it to have an opinion".
No I don't, the purpose for a trailer is to get you interested, and the trailer did the exact opposite.
I know the who shot Jr reference exist, but I would never know where it was from.
Well said. I turned away from the trailer .
Nothing about it said: "Give this a chance."
Same here that trailer definitely turned me off
Especially these days when trailers essentially are a summary of the movie or she before it’s released, like, everything they needed to be said was said!
Angry animations rants from korey are some of the best reviews
Especially when he's talking about the state of Western animation aimed at adults.
On the fiftieth anniversary year too? Almost feels iinsulting on purpose.

What's funny is, whoever made this show wasn't a fan or did their homework.
The Evens family made it out of the ghetto: Michael went to college for law; JJ became a comic book artist; I forgot Thelma's husband's name, his knee healed up and he went back to playing professional football, then they moved to a new condo with Florida.
Bro.. They pulled a FUCKING DALLAS reference 😂😂😂!?
Well that just means that either one of them had a kid, who became a failure, and moved to the hood. Or one of those 3 failed and moved back to the hood. My money's on JJ.
Seriously, it would have been better if this featured them living a middle class life and maybe even start off with a family reunion where all the family is united together showing how better their lives have done.

Glad Korey gave this a F You rating.
Really liked how Korey broke down the positives and the negatives with the show. While still saying that the show is still terrible.
The final 11 minutes of this review Korey really hits home the problem with this kind of show.
Reminds me of the Dolittle review where at first Korey was willing to give this a Some ol BS, but after listing other problems the F You rating sneaked in.
Every negative stereotype they could find.
The baby acting like a human?! Korey, aren't babies human? 🤣
I loved how Korey checked to make sure none of his pets were under his chair before scooting back to shout “NOTHING!”
It’s stuff like this is why American Fiction is important film and the film wasn’t out for a year.
It's another case of SOUL PLANE Syndrome. No matter how largely offensive to Black people and poorly made the rest of the product, there's always gonna be a couple of solid jokes in there that'll make you chuckle. Still, this animation looks like mid-2000s Comedy Central at its worst.
Now that you mentioned it, the animation does remind me of Shorties Watchin' Shorties from Comedy Central.
Never thought I'd be reminded of that obscure show this year.
Im pretty sure this has existed long before soul plane. I just hate the fact that these things have to be so wildly exaggerated as opposed to just telling the truth and allow imagination to fill in the gaps. Social media is not imagination
It's a worse version of mtvs Friday cartoon
Unfortunately, I've heard TOO MANY black people praise soul plane as great comedy. That was until Katt Williams interview reminded everyone to hate kevin hart for no reason.
Personally I'm sick of the "ugly adult animated art style" then the actual writing itself.
The Evans family didnt even use foul language. The only thing close to one is when Florida said damn that one time. The Evans family jad morals and values so it's kind of difficult to believe these are supposed to be their descendants. Norman Lear would have never approved this had he been alive.
Technically... it was 3 times. Damn damn damn...😂
the blonde fade on the drug dealing baby is insane. lock up everyone responsible for this show
soon as i saw the title: "aww shit".
lol
Norman Lear stole the concept though. I found out later the man he stole it from was a writer on Good Times and had to sue Norman for his residules. Seth MacFarlane should've left this alone. I definitely won't be watching 🙄
Norman Lear stole a lot of his shows from black creator's, from "Good Times" to Sanford and Son he even stole "all in the family", FUN FACT: Eric Monte the true creator of Good Times also wrote Cooley High a black American staple and that movie was actually based on his life.
Eric Monte sued and was paid $ 1 million dollars settlement and a small percentage of residuals from Good Times and one percentage ownership of the show. Eric made the mistake of not getting his creations written into a contract so he could get his proper payments, then started crying-FOUL-when he didn't recieve credit or payments for his ideals. Mean while Norman Lear was worth $ 300 million before he died.
But Seth MacFarlane wasn’t the showrunner though.

If they wanted a show to piggyback off of they should have used PJs
If they put this on Adult Swim with a different name, people would've called it a Discount Version of "The Boondocks"

The amount of people in the comments that actually "hate" watched this after seeing the trailer actually surprised me.
After I saw the trailer,I immediately cancelled my Netflix acct..

The "Bobs Burgers" comparison is spot on, both shows are about "small wins" not big success. Great Point Kory
Wasn't 'Black Dynamite' - both film & animated series supposed to be tongue-in-cheek parodies of the OTT 1970s Blaxploitation culture ? 🙄
True but this is not the same situation. Black Dynamite true was tongue-in-cheek blaxploitation parody. Good Times is supposed to be the reimagining of the 70's show and fails at all aspects. It only exploits the negative stereotypes of American black culture.
@@jgshaolinterrific5218 Yes,I understand that;as I am a Black Brit, whose knows about 'Good Times' due to its long-time,nostalgic US reputation,as well as in the UK,we had our own,short-lived adaptation called 'The Fosters' (1976-7).👌👍

Say what you will about Hazbin Hotel in terms of writing, but in terms of premise, presentation, character design, art style and animation, it’s fairly unique. Granted the bar for western adult animation has been very low for the past decade plus, but still.
(Also, Netflix Good Times doesn’t have any catchy songs so Hazbin Hotel wins by default lol.)
Or even Helluva boss with also writing, characters and the unique decision of portraying some of the leading sins like Beelzebub and Asmodeus as decent people is still more intriguing than this.
No we have Arcane and Blue Eyed Samurai, I’d say the bar has been set pretty high
Don’t forget Primal, and I would say Invincible but it’s animation doesn’t look very good most of the time.
@@zangoon4546That’s true, but in terms of adult animated comedies AKA shows that are trying to ape off of Family Guy, South Park and Rick and Morty, that’s where the bar is low.
Hazbin was made by someone who truly believes in what she creates. "Good Times" is a hollow cash grab on an established IP. So yeah, say what you want about Hazbin, but it had fucking INTEGRITY.
You guys watched it for us, so we didn't have to. Thanks
Recently watched American Fiction and im happy that in a age where that film's message has never been more relevant, at least we can all agree on how low we're all willing to go before we say enough is enough.

The PJs should've gotten a spin-off, but Smokey and Calvin as adults.
I watched the entire series primarily out of morbid curiosity (also, I just had nothing better to do this weekend). I'm gonna be as fair as I can; there was at least ONE episode (#8) that showed a spark of creativity. It commits the ultimate crime of just not being funny. Being funny goes a LONG way, stereotypes or not.
That was my beef with the show...it wasn't FUUNY (and I am a sucker for tastless shows, raunchy or stepping over that line)
What's worse is that it's not funny but you can tell the people behind it think there writing something intelligent
That's crazy I'm on episode 8 amd i agree it is one of the better episodes. The stereotypes is an overload but I would give it 4/10. I'm not too sensitive with the stereotypes but definitely agree it wasn't as funny. I like the character Rae though.
I really can't believe all those great black actors and comedians read that script and thought this was a good idea.
It's Scooby Doo all over again. They took the name and just made a completely different show.

Technically Teen Titans Go was the first
@@ejohnson6683 not really teen titans go was just an attempt to bring a popular show back in a different way for a new generation while it may have sucked to older people the new generation that actually watched it see it as nostalgia
Actually that's because little kids were obsessed with it. The show is made to pander to kids.
I grew up on GoodTimes. I watched the intro and in less than 5 mins, turned it off and went and put on the pilot episode of GoodTimes. This is an abomination and disrespectful to the spirit of the original show. My family isn’t black, but we related to the poor aspect of the show as minorities growing up in East LA. This show plays on stereotypes and shouldn’t have been made.
Steph gotta get his name off this lol
Been waiting to hear this one
Boondocks is goated for its satire. With a black creator, black cast of goats and how real the Boondocks was I disagree with there view of the Boondocks and the adult swim hate. Black Jesus is no where near as smart and well written as the Boondocks. "Good times" is not good enough for adult swim.
Going based off this review it sounds like the show is everything we feared. Just another adult animated show with a reliance on vulgarity or shock humor, having terrible animation and character designs, and only bearing the name Good Times as a way to market and sell this product that could have easily been overlooked or forgotten 🤔.
Also, I love how the NAACP said that choices were made with the marketing and I would say the same for the whole show. As it's mostly black talent behind this that should know better 🤨.
Edit: thanks for mentioning The PJs I forgot about that show and need to revisit it.
I remember watching the PJ's back in the 90s about a Super in the projects it had claymation. That show was more GoodTimes then this.
I definitely agree
People was warned with "Hollywood Shuffle".
"Hear me out" - Buck dancing Korey
Nah. Just joking.
I know you are joking but it is funny how some black people default insult is calling someone some type of slave or sell out( in various ways) when there is a difference of race related opinions on anything.
@@RayValdezPhotography depends how sell out-ish that opinion is. If you're on some Thomas Sowell, basically going out of your way to make it look like Black people are the worst thing in the world, if you're like Tatum literally trying to make racial massacres like the Tulsa Massacre black people's fault, if you're agreeing that black people are somehow inferior, then no, I don't think it's out of hand, because that's mental slavery.

There is no “If it was called anything else besides Good Times” They used the Good Times name as a cash grab, there’s no separating it.
In the show, they finally made it out of the projects, now Evans’ as a family are back in the projects? The premise is horrible, I can’t look past it being “Good Times” and that’s the creators’ fault.
Miss me with all that. Not watching.
Missed opportunity to continue the Evan’s family story from the suburbs. Could’ve extended the boondocks type commentary on modern black lives.
Yeah.
No because boondocks itself was satire
Tbh if you would have told me this came out in 2009 on Fox during the family guy hiatus I'll probably Believe you lol
How do they explain the apparent rebuilding of Cabrini Green? 😂
I could barely finish the first episode
I was like Martin. Watched 2 eps and was like...nope. This is trash. The second episode is the episode that did their own interpretation of Inside Out. I TOTALLY agree that this show had zero business being named after Good Times. There was zero point to it....least for the two episodes I saw. I was stunned they got top voice actors to be involved along with having Steph Curry and Seth McFarlane produce this. I get maybe the fact Norman Leer was involved before he passed but did noone watch the pilot before airing??
I'm not as offended by shows mentioned on Adult Swim featuring black characters like Korey seems to be especially Boondocks. To me the show was making fun of the stereotypes. I didn't like Boondocks watching first ep but by second I got what they were trying to do and was like...ooooo ok ok. I got you. One of the best animated shows done imo. But Good Times? wtf?! Some of the jokes hit but majority...nah. This show is embarrassing on multiple levels. Really? @ who shot J.R., Someone who wrote on Dallas back in the 80's was on the staff? lol
This show sounds like it has the same problem as Velma, where could call it anything else because it has NOTHING to do with the source material you're basing it off of.
Martin always getting on these reviews after watching 2 episodes.
I will continue with my realized thought that Blackish is the reimagined Good Times. 40 years later, we made it out and are successful. Grant it, we still have struggles with conforming and fitting in with folks who think we don't belong.
I used to work for the studio that made this, but currently work for the studio that makes proud family, so glad to hear you compare the two

17:18 (Adult Swim)
I think I'd like to elaborate on the Adult Swim Part. This feels like it'd b home on Adult Swim, but something from the early 2000s where this kind of style and edginess would've been at home and a little more accepted. Also their small attempts at deeper commentary feel like very level 1 basic things that people probably might know at this point from other movies and shows done way better.
Back when courts judged pornography based on "lack of any social benefit," pornographers would insert one sentence of a PSA into a 30-minute porno movie.
early adult swim is home movies, Harvey Birdman, etc which were far better than this and had way more heart
@jamalwalker oh without a doubt those shows had way more heart and quality.
Why is Wanda Sykes' her character's name "Ms. Likeigiveashit". Based on the trailer, isn't she supposed to be a school counselor or teacher? I know it's supposed to be a comedy, but it appears that some parts of it are trying to make a statement about life in the "Hood" and be social commentary. For example, the part where they imply that the "powers that be" are putting guns into their community, but in the same light, they present a school official whose name is "Ms. Likeigiveashit", and when the mom is there to discuss her son's education, this school administrator suggest he consider doing "Only Fans"? So it appears that they are sending mixed message.
It's that crazy mouth animation whenever they talk is what gets me 😵💫🤣
They probably should’ve gotten Aaron Mcgrurder to write/direct this show
