    Have to admit your builds are fun, built one for each of the grandkids, and found a use for all those quad motors. I no longer fly, hands and eyes are shot, sins of old age. But find your little planes most forgiving. Building these has helped me keep my sanity during these ridiculas lock downs. Think I'd rather get sick, than feel like an inmate in my own home. Thanks for making something fun for kids of all ages, even old men. Take care.

    Pleased to say my scratch build is progressing very well.
    I extended one doubler back to 5mm rear of the wing crease. This will add more foam surface area to glue the lower Wing to.
    I realised there is a perfect placed accessible area on lower fus,,over the CG, to fit a Gyro Stabilizer. As Im using 5mm Foam board, Ill measure the gap for the Power Pod and scratch build this, an easy task. saved me stripping the paper off the inside of doublers, With my Foam Board, this is not an easy task! Im guing to use 4X vertical BBQ dowels to secure the centre of Top Wing. This worked perfectly on my Baby Blender and very robust. PS, with BBQ skewer LE, TE and tip reinforcement, the wings have turned out super robust, again developed from the BB build. Thanks

Its no problem, but I wouldnt call them Speed Build.But with care, time and many improvements, I like ti take care and time building, enjoyable on its own for me,. This is a lovely build and shoild finish a great little 3Ch model.
    Ive found a couple of 20x18x100mm 3S 2A Lipos which fit perfectly in the model, and only 70g weighr,
    I realise when I PVA the lower wing in place, the Rudder and Elevator will be inaccessible. but replacements can be fitted to outer Fus, saving surgery.
    Ive done so many mods to improve the airframe rigidity, which has taken some time, but rewarding.Latest was to add plsatic straw tube here the pushrods pass thru the fus. Without these the rods bind to the tail feather foam., not good. I found these simple wings much harder to make and fit, than the usual folded ones on your other models. The camber gauges gave me the wrong result.

  • @chriswarren1618
    @chriswarren1618 Před rokem

    Having built a couple of your C sized Power Pod and now this SE5, I realise how you achieve the necessary 2/3 degrees of Motor Dow-nthrust,with a 90 degree Firewall. The ply firewall upper edge is oversized, which is a bodge to receive the required result. This means the front of the Power Pod will not sit flush to the Fus top foam . This renders the front PP location tabs pretty redundant. You really should have explained the design philosophy at the start, as Im wrongly thinking I made a mistake. In past builds I have modified the arrangement so PP fits squarely and far more secure. I have made the motor down-thrust angle using a couple of thin spacer washers on the motor top 2 retaining screws. That works well. I realise the same design 'defect' with this SE5, so I will suitably angle the firewall by angling the Firewall sides at the front. A much better arrangement, giving snug Power Pod security against the Fus top foam.

    If you are new with the Servo Cetering tool, leave the Servo unconnected while you do the balance lead 1S trick as per video.This way if you get it wrong you will only lose the tool not the servo. Of course, when all is ok, you can plug in the Servo to the centering tool connector.

    Great design. Laser cut quality is a problem on the white paper backed foam kits though, which left a huge > 1/8” concave in the foam cuts resulting in bad glue joints unless you put gobs of glue on the cut edges.
    Love these kits, I hope you fix or adjust the laser cutter in the future to avoid frustration when assembling.

  • @chriswarren1618

    OOps, I made a mistake. Using slightly 5mm foam board, my 3S 800ma Lipo doesnt quite fit flat under the Power Pod. (1/8 inch too narrow) I suggest a solution using my material is to only use one thickness doublers inside the Nose and make your Power Pod to fit after completing this stage. At least there is sufficient width for my 2212 brushless motors, so Ill just have to mount the Lipo vertical and off center. Oh well I have a second set of wings cut, so Ill just make another Fus to my revised material specs. I realised that you can make more battery/esc room by making the lower nose totally square to that bottom plate. or at least 80 degrees. Great, 10x box of A1 Foam board arrived at my door,yesterday, so I can build more of these great Mighty Minis.
    No Orlando CVS to go to any more, so I have to pay inflated 4 Bucks a sheet, but still good value. Thanks

  • @chriswarren1618
    @chriswarren1618 Před rokem

    Im scratch building this first and I do feel the dihedral line in the wings is going to be a definite weak point, So I leave my wings straight. Wish me luck or a good Gyro stabiliser might help me out. Ill build my speedbuild kit as per video for a comparison..Ive standardised on insetting/PVAing BBQ skewers into all exposed edges on foam, by 1/2 diameter. Not too much extra weight, but really prevents ground handling damage.

    That' a great build video Josh. Thanks. Near the end of the video you said it is a CCW prop but that's from the front view of the plane. From the pilot's POV it's a CW prop. This is a normal prop, not a reverse prop. Or am I missing something here?

  • @edwill62

    I know this is an old video and some may not respond. But I have watched many vids with this build and many have issues with it flying and getting off the ground. Of course Josh is a superb pilot so he can fly most anything good or bad
    I want to make a SE5a under 250 grams and I went in the forums and got suggestions on creating plans, enlarging, downsizing etc. BUT My thought here is how many have built this FT kit and have you had issues trying to fly it or have you had a great outcome flying it ?
    Days of Balsa and large aircraft for me anyway has ended so I look to downsize my entire fleet ( and I already have some UMX plans and micro quads ) But wish to build a few from foam or buy FT kits to fulfill my desire .
    Any advice and how did yours turn out ?

    • @mins_982
      @mins_982 Před 7 lety

      AssassinManPlays radios always have at least 4 channels,on the reciever there are multiple ports(depends on how much channels are)and each one corresponds at a channel on the tx. In this case is a 3 channel plane that means you have throttle rudder and elevator.
      Left and right on the left stick will not be used. BTW check hobbyking.com for crazy cheap radios(50$ or so) and FT beginner series for more information about. I hope this helps you!

    • @rlb96
      @rlb96 Před 7 lety

      I believe ailerons could be added very easily, however I went in a different direction and made the elevator into elevons. I kept the rudder, so with the rudder, and two servos for elevons I added the weight of one more servo. If I had added ailerons I would have just used one servo and hooked it up with a double sided arm and operated both ailerons with one servo mounted in the fuselage. I also used a piece of foam and made a servo tray that has both elevon servos and the rudder servo. I don't have a spare receiver for it so I haven't flown it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I also didn't use the speed build kit that I bought. I just traced out the pattern of the components on dollar tree foam board so I didn't waste a speed build kit in case this experiment doesn't work. lol

    I'm not sure that I understand why the prop needs to be spinning counterclockwise (not to mention you've changed your reference point from the pilot's to one that is in front of the plane, the pilot would call that a clockwise rotation from his view. I only mention this because you picked a reference perspective in the beginning, and this rotational direction doesn't use it). How would a system operating in the other direction differ at all? Single prop Russian planes operated with rotations opposite of this and were just fine. From a physical standpoint there should be no mechanical advantage one way or the other, and from what I've been reading on this, there isn't a difference in practice either... Unless of course the plane itself was designed to operate with that rotational direction in mind, and its design depends on a specific gyroscopic precession. That's a different story though. What is your reasoning for stating that it is so important that rotation is in a specific direction?

      Power pod has right thrust built into it to counter the torque of a clockwise, pilot's perspective, rotating propeller which induces a counter clockwise roll in the air frame. A counter clockwise turning propeller would induce a clockwise torque to the air frame and cause very strong torque roll to the right because of the built in right thrust.

      The kit does not include a radio receiver or transmitter. The receiver you use must match your transmitter
