I'm from Philadelphia (US) and "Fa schifo" was absorbed long ago into local English (through Italian immigrants) in the form of the verb "skeeve". As in "I really skeeve that guy." It's considered very working-class Philadelphia to know and use that word.
I'm writer and poet. I'm learning Italian language because it inspires me to write deeply. But I become addicted to your channel, I really appreciate you, I wish you all the best.
You have to read Antonio Pizzuto then, I am Italian guy but I assure you I wish to write like this wonderful writer. Never in my life had I read so majestic Italian language.

In Serbia we also use phrase "Ma dai!" for "really" or "come on", but we write it like "Ma daj!". Pronunciation is the same. Interesting thing to know. 😊

After 40 years here, I have my habits when I speak Italian and never change. The wife hates it. I also throw in a word or 2 of Bolognese dialect just for the fun of it. Compliments on the young lady's accent. I still sound like Dan Peterson selling Lipton Tea!

Wow! Being a native Spanish speaker, I got a better idea of the exact meanings of these phrases rather than just understanding English because they're very similar to the ones we use in Spanish, both in meaning and in situations we use them.
Not surprising, since Italian and Spanish are such similar languages! As an American, when I meet someone who speaks Spanish but not English (which happens a lot), it's easier for me to just speak Italian, and we'll understand each other, well, mas o meno (that is, pius o meno!). That's not entirely a good thing, since it makes me lazy to improve my poor Spanish!

@@whupass95 I´m a Spanish-speaking American now studying Italian and while some of the grammar in the Romance languages is similar, Spanish and Italian have so many false friends that it´s less confusing for me to study through English.
Same in German for a surprising amount of them
nota: "mi fa piacere" è una trappola, è importante capire l'intonazione di chi lo dice, perchè potrebbe essere usato in modo ironico/sarcastico per far intendere che "non mi interessa" .
come "good for you" che in pratica significa "buon per te ma a me non mi tange"

Our Italian teacher taught us "lasciami in pace" during our student trip to Italy while in high school.
I've heard "lasciami stare" and has the same meaning .
If you want to go superinformal you can also say “non rompere” 😁
I love visiting Italy for motorcycle riding (46!) I was preparing for my 8th trip when COVID struck. I never learned to speak Italian & it was becoming embarrassing, after so many visits. So in preparation for my 2021 trip I've been studying. I have a tutor 1 day a week, but I live in Los Angeles; not many Italian speakers here. I always practice by myself. Your videos have really helped! Grazie!

you can even correctly say "Che schifo!" doesn't change the meaning at all
Of course isn't the perfect translate of "come no?". If i always go to the gym every day and for a week i didn't do that,
My friend:" sei andato in palestra questa settimana?"
Me:"no, questa settimana non ci sono andato"
My friend "come no?!"
Ma dai can also be translated as “Oh, come on . . . “ as in, “you must be joking”.
you can use non fa niente, the same way people use never mind in English also

I spent 16 months in Italy and learned to understand and use these phrases but didn't always know the right way to use them or how to express the translation to someone else. This video has been very enlightening and so much fun to watch! Which city are you in?
