Pierre, you really didn't know she was English? My favorite parts of the videos are when she says English words and her accent comes out.
Semplificato.
#7 Have a relationship with an Italian boyfriend or girlfriend!
this should actually be #1. Because it's how most people I've seen have become fluent. Oh well, us married folk will have to keep trudging along :(
That is, in fact, the best way to learn any kind of language. Imagine having someone, who's fluent in the language you're learning, by your side 24/7 - Game changer!
But the main part of it is to resist your soulmate’s attempts to talk in English 😅
@@elxakiltse8773 Not true! My boyfriend is Italian and in almost TEN years I've learnt nothing from him! Despite us living in Italy, he refuses to speak Italian to me and only speaks English. The only other language I hear in the house is dialect, when he is on the phone to family...
I married a Brazilian girl 21 years ago. So as you can imagine, I learned Portuguese immediately.
Sending my love from 🇮🇷.
Grazie!

That’s so funny. I’ve been studying Italian for a little more than a year and when I do speaking exercises I feel like I’m doing a Borat impression.
Il mio è solo un consiglio :)
one year more passed by. Anyway, I could suggest you to watch the italian dubbed version of Borat :) and perhaps you may discover something! ciao!
The easiest way is to live in Italy and live with a native speaker. It's so difficult when you're in another country and have to rely on learning from books, films and maybe some lessons, but are not fuly immersed in the language in everyday life and don't have a native speaker to help you.
Not everyone can move to Italy though
Sto imparando l’italiano perché amo la cultura italiana e mi piace viaggiare in Italia. Voi siete buoni insegnanti! Grazie!
Bravo! Hai scritto in modo perfetto.
Grande Thomas...! Continua così...!
anche io!
I started learning Italian after my first visit to Italy, twenty years ago, in my mid-60s. I had previously learned Indonesian in a residential immersive course in Java. It was here that I woke up to 'pure' vowel sounds, the same as in Italian. These are not normal for us Australians but, to me, using them is of key importance. In the 2000s I used to travel to Melbourne weekly for intensive classes at the Centre for IItalian Studies in Carlton. As my hearing isn't good after a head injury, I don't easily decode what is said to me, so Italian conversation isn't easy. But reading in Italian is a good, if partial, compensation. That's why: vostri sottotitoli stanno importanti.

Katie è veramente diventata fluente in italiano.
Anche a me😍🤣
Mi fa molto piacere, amico nipponico!
Katie's Italian is outstanding... And she keeps improving. The first time I heard her I thought she might have been maybe German, closer to Italy. Her English accent is all gone.
What happened to the woman a few years ago that was on this site? I thought the former female host represented Italy. This show host now doesn't even have an original Italian name. No offense to anyone, just my opinion. :)
@@jackcaprioti1403 well English is the international language... It's understandable. Katie represents Italy perfectly. Her diction his excellent and has studied Italian in depth even more than many Italians. Plus she can be a role model for learners of Italian...
I was pretty sure she was Ukrainian or Belarusian based on the accent
@@dustgreylynx Wow it's a long way from Belarus to Ukraine 😁. Katie sometimes uses a Lombard accent.

You really both have the loveliest manner, and there's a wonderful dynamic between you. Great - and very helpful - to listen to you both!
I have always wanted to learn Italian, but finally took the plunge when I found a new job where there were a few italians who speak their language on breaks. They're always trying to teach me words here and there, which is great, but I wanted to learn more.
Mi piacciono moltissimo le vostre puntate. Ho imparato un sacco guardandole. Un abbraccio da Stoccolma 🙂
Speaking Italian seems like the best way to really express what I want to say. It's in my head but won't come out of my mouth!
Same dude, from my heart and long time i planned, i want to learn this language but isn't easy to learned it.
So sad:(
Grazie!
I started learning Italian randomly from duolingo, and I can literally speak and understand it well by now. Although I haven't taken any italian courses in school, only yt videos, music and more media.
Randomly?
How much times you needed to learn italian at least to that lvl when you can talk and understand what people saying in italain?
Being second generation Italian but born and raised in Canada, I would like to visit my Uncle in Sicily. I was raised watching movies that spoke in Sicilian dialects, and my parents morphed English and Italian words together. I need to unlearn all those bad habits and be able to have a conversation in Italian so my Uncle can understand me. Your videos are helping me a ton. Thank you!
Katie and Matteo! You are both inspiration to me! I only moved to Italy last September from the UK and am really enjoying learning the language!

I enjoyed this episode so much thank you both, I am looking forward to being understood as well as Borat!
I have always loved the Italian culture, in particular the romance and the arts, so to speak the language would be a dream come true, so thank you both again for making me believe in myself.
Thanks for sharing your story Katie! It’s encouraging and gives me hope I will eventually get to be able to communicate in Italian. 🇮🇹
Still making my way through the 5 Minute Italian podcasts - they were awesome! They were so helpful on our trip to Venice, Florence and Rome, so thank you!
Katie. I thought you were Italian. I've just started learning and I'm 53. Better late than never.
I started to learn Italian when my youngest daughter went to Rovereto to do her PhD in neuropsycology... we visited several times and practised talking a bit with locals. I do Duolingo every day and a zoom class twice a month, but I think immersion is the only way. My French is better because pre-Covid we go 5 times a year so practice is real.
Molto interessante imparare dall’'esperienza di Katie nell'apprendimento dell'italiano. Molte grazie per condividere questo con noi - :)
I love watching you guys…. I will learn what you are saying (eventually)… you are so fun to watch. Great energy from you both. Thanks
I love the way the Italian language sounds ,I learned some when I was a kid with my parents going to a night school, a long time ago. I've re-started learning about 4 months ago through Duolingo, some old books that I have ie. Buongiorno Italia(1980's). I really enjoy reading in Italian out loud, but sadly most of it I don't understand, or there words and phrases that I know and me brain just freezes up. I will keep going on it though because I want to live in Italy one day, that's my motivation.
I think your videos are great!, real fun to watch(a few times), glad I found you.
I have always loved Italy, its culture, language and of course the food!
I am from Brazil, I learned English when I lived there for two years. Now Italian is my target and the more I learn, the more I fall in love with this wonderful language.
Maybe someday I will come back here and post this again but in Italian
I thought Italian is popular in Brazil beside Portoguese since there are many Italian influnced in Brazil

So I found your youtube and I like your approach in teaching with Mateo humor. You’re doing a great job and I agree it is better learning in a day to day conversations than from a book!
How inspirational this video is. Thank you Katie and Matteo, I'll keep at it and perhaps one day when I can go to Italy again I'll be able to understand and talk to all the lovely Italian people I meet. Un abbraccio X
Thank you for this episode! Tonight I was seriously thinking of giving up Italian studies. I get so bored doing the course I am on. I realised tonight I only enjoy Italian when I come and listen to you guys talking. You make it easy and fun and then I want to learn. Lovely video -- I'm going to rewatch this until I can stop reading the English subtitles (currently part way there). So encouraging to hear the Katie had such struggles-- I assumed she found it all very easy. My Italian speaking husband thinks Katie's Italian is great. I'm going to get there too! I just need to move to Italy! Would love to actually but not easy. Will keep watching your videos in the meantime.
You still need to study here. I moved two years ago with about b 1 level now I understand everything and speak about b2 , but it’s not enough just to live here . It helps . But you still need to study and speak , write , text , think Italian all day!
@@deannaolivieri1791 thank you. I really do appreciate your point. It gives me hope to still try.

I want learn Italian as I am second generation Italian. My parents could speak and did but only so they could say something without my understanding. I took French in high school but as an adult I wanted to learn Italian. I had no one to practice with but i am continuing to try with your site.
I was in the same boat . My parents were first generation and told English was more important then passing along their parents native language. So when they had children (3boys) they only spoke Italian when they didn't want us to know what they were saying . We called that "Speaking behind our backs in front of us" HAHAHAHA
@@biker9114 that was why I took French in high school. So we each could speak a language the other would not understand.
Thanks Katie for teaching us to be gentle with self as we learn.
Awesome video guys! Excellent advice and I think that everyone watching this got some important takeaways!
i studied one year of italian during my last year of college in honor of my grandfather who at age 23 had immigrated to USA from rural Sicily. Meno male. Like Katie's decision to study Italian rather than some other non-Spanish language, the decision to study Italian for one year in college was the second smartest decision I've done in my (long) life as it enabled me to study, work and make life-long Italian friends. I love this video and completely agree with your advice. I lead an Italian language club at the local (California) library (now on zoom) and encourage them to watch your videos, they're great.
Grazie mille per questa appuntata ❤️ What I really like about your story Katia, is that it didn't matter you got off the wrong foot with the Italian language, you just had to "meet it again" in a different way to fall in love with it! I'm kind of having a similar situation with Czech language 🙂💪💪 This video is inspiring me, not to stay angry with bad previous language experiences 😊
I have restarted learning Italian my third or fourth attempt I recently met a kind Italian person willing to teach me the language so with her tutoring me and using youtube etc I feel encouraged, this video has great tips as it does feel like an uphill climb learning a new language at 56!
You are an inspiration to all of us who are learning italiano. Tu sei un'ispirazione, grazie mille. Lo spagnolo is beautiful also.
I play il contrabbasso and I did a duet concert with an Italian contrabbasso player who lives here in NZ. We became friends and I thought Italian might be easy to learn. 20+ years later I'm still trying and am a low intermediate level. But I love the language and have some great Italian friends. I visited Italia in 2018 and intend to return next year. I really like what you two say - I have been searching for how I can get better. I do talk to an Italian friend (who lives in Italia) most weeks. Grazie mille.
I'm also English and learning Italian! My grandad is Sicilian and used to speak a little to me so i'd love to be fluent, hopefully i'll be as amazing as Katie someday!
I started learning Italian about 4 years ago on my own with workbooks because I really did fall in love with this language, I was only 17! It was such a beautiful sounding dramatic sounding language I knew I had to learn it ! I can speak it well now thank God
Thanks for sharing. I need to rewatch this episode because I was mostly looking at the Italian subtitles, which I only understand a bit. Long story short. I went to San Salvo for work a few years ago and found few people speak English. I struggled to get around and decided to learn Italian because I loved the friendly and helpful people and delicious food there. Btw,I am Chinese in the UK.
Your Italian is far better than mine, but then I’ve lived in Oz most of my life. Bravo.👍
Before I started learning Italian, I tried to learn Spanish. I spent the first year trying to learn from textbooks which did not work. After that I watched Spanish CZcams videos and movies and that helped a lot. So When I started Italian I watched Italian videos for a month before even getting a textbook.
Grazie mille!! This was the most encouraging video I've seen in the process of learning Italian! I moved from US to IT with my family and this video gave me reassurance in my progress of learning. I understand a lot but have been reluctant to speak much. I will continue to follow you. Thank you so much! Also, I love your energy!
I have always loved the sound of Italian. I grew up learning French, took Latin in school, so had some background in romance languages. Then my nephew married a woman whose father is from Sicily, so then I had a reason to learn Italian - to speak with them as they and their children were also learning the language and to look forward to visiting Italy. Then, of course, Covid happened and no trips to Italy. Now I am back at it and looking forward to next year in Italia

Grazie a te
Do you want that i translate the comment in english?
@@lollo5086 grazie a te! Ho capito Che ha scritta!
@@andrewdundas335 scusa.... me lo puoi dire in inglese???
Sorry....can you tell me that in english? You've writed something wrong and I don't understand
@@lollo5086 sorry! 😂 I meant "I understood what you wrote!"
@@andrewdundas335 ah ok ahahahah thanks..... It would be correct to write "ho capito cosa hai scritto". I know that you too don't understand so good my english but i don't speak this language everyday as you....
