It makes perfect sense to me. The typical psychological profile of firemen is generally similar to that of policemen, both organizations being hierarchical and attracting authoritarian types. The main difference is that firemen tend to be less interested in social skills (including fighting), but more in technology. They are not normally paranoid, but once they are influenced in this respect by the police, I am not surprised when one of them tries to do what he thinks is the right thing and necessary, and goes about it very awkwardly and counterproductively. I think one really needs to show quite a bit more leniency in this respect for random firemen than for random policemen. (This does not include firemen whose actual role is to engage with members of the public e.g. to enforce fire safety standards.)

Im a Firefighter in Australia. We are big on public relations. If we acted like this with a member of the public who was taking some pics of one of our appliances we would get our arses kicked big time. Would never happen though as we are always happy to chat to the public and spread some awareness. Brits seem very paranoid for some reason especially around number plates. Just weird.

If the entire publicly accessible area was full of people, it'd be chaos, 100% unsafe and it wouldn't be practical for the workers to actually work, which in this insance could mean people burning to death......so although it's legal, I'd say it'll only stay legal when there's so few actually doing it. If enough people started doing it, it'd have to become law to keep it restricted from the public.

This them and us attitude has permeated the whole of England but it's them seeking power and privilege not us, and it's them not appreciating the rights that should protect all of us, and its going to further pressure and reveal the inadequacies of the letter of the law because they don't seem to have any idea of the spirit of the law. This is what needs to be pointed out to them. That copper learned the hard way that he had no power other than the unlawful confusion and intimidation that usually works for him but he utterly failed to admit it and walked away pretending it wasn't him that had been a complete wander.

You cannot 'trespass someone'. This is incorrect English used by poorly educated US police officers to mean that they're going to charge you with trespass. It's not even proper English usage in the the USA, let alone here in the UK.
The verb trespass is used intransitively and means to commit a trespass: specifically to enter unlawfully on the land of another, or on that which is the property or right of another. The trespasser is doing the trespassing, not the person removing the trespasser; therefore you cannot 'trespass someone' from your property for committing trespass, and in the same way you cannot 'burgle someone' from your property for committing burglary. Even using trespass transitively, which is obsolete usage, means to transgress or violate (a law etc).
    Hope this helps. xx
