      David Frum helped George Bush lie America into the Iraq War. The fact that mainstream media accepts him as a guest says a lot about them.

      Open Comments, well Maher does not always pick guests who he agrees with, nor respects very much.
      But i do agree, i expected to be groaning at Frum when i saw his face, but he was surprisingly decent this time, compared to the Mooch, that is. Same for Donna, i think she's shady too, but luckily she did not have a lot to say.

      He earned my forgiveness when he was expelled from the Republican party for failing to tow the party line. He has obviously evolved over the last twenty years. He would be a great guest for Steve Paikin. He's too dry for American audiences but Ontarians are used to that kind of personal style.

      Morty. "He earned my forgiveness when he was expelled from the Republican party for failing to tow the party line" If its that easy for you to forgive David Frum then maybe you aren't grasping how devastating the Iraq War has been for Iraqis and Americans. It's not even clear how many people died as a result. The war also led to to the creation of ISIS and the proliferation of violent extremist ideologies across the region. Even now people are suffering because of him and others. No one should take this guy seriously. He hasn't paid his debt to society in order to be forgiven

    Bill should make a rule on his show. If you start a sentence with "What about...", you are GONE! This rise of Whataboutism is the worst thing to happen to political discussion in the last decade. Don't answer my question with a question, especially a bullshit question.

    • @snuffeldjuret
      @snuffeldjuret Před 6 lety +3

      the reason people use "what about" is because they are pointing out hypocrisy. you cant criticize the other side if your own side is doing the same thing and you dont say anything about it. its hypocritical and makes you look like you dont really care about the issue, and that your only using it to attack the other side. its about having integrity. and it applies to either side.

    This is a perfect example of how impossible it’s become to have even a SIMPLE conversation about current events between people of opposing Democratic/Republican ideologies (not even accounting for how far left or right in them they might be). It just devolves into talking over each other, not listening, and not giving a single goddamned inch or admitting ANYTHING that might have been wrong, even if the fault wasn’t their own.

Don't pull this, "Both sides do it," shit! THIS IS NOT NORMAL. David Frum was normal. The guy to the left of Scarface seemed normal in this clip. There are normal conservatives. TODAY'S GOP HAS BROKEN POLITICS. When the GOP was a conservative party, it was, "Left vs. Right"; now that it's an AUTHORITARIAN party, they've made everything into "us vs. them". "Them" (Democrats, liberals, progressives, moderates, "the Left") don't just have a different viewpoint on policies which can be discussed. They consider all those people NOT EVEN AMERICANS!!

      @Balance Life In a way, I too wish AS was still in the administration. I liked having him dropped in that original cast of characters. When he was first hired, my reaction was "this won't end well" thinking AS might grow weary of having to always let the spotlight shine on Mr Trump. For someone with his personality plus coming from Wall Street (meaning not DC), I thought Public Liaison might be a tough role for him. Who could know the Mooch would blow up so quickly?! I also didn't think we'd get someone like Gen Kelly until around now (Feb 2018). The Mooch is just a little too colourful (and maybe too rich) for DC. And, yes, I completely agree with the New Yorker in him tripping him up -- it's both what makes him great and is his Achilles' heel. He makes me cringe, but I was hoping he'd talk about Davos.

    Scaramucci: "... What does that even mean? Are you talking about my ambition? I've already lived a great life. I went in there [White House] to try to serve the country and help the middle and lower middle class people who are struggling in this country. You gotta wake up, brother. You're living in, like, an ivory tower. You gotta snap out of it."

    • @AmirandJake
      @AmirandJake Před 6 lety +12

      Scaramucci loosely quoted The Godfather Pt.III, in which the sentiment is to not allow your hate cloud your judgment. Frum replied with, "don't let ambition cloud your judgment." This phrase could apply to almost anyone who has worked with, is working with, and who might be considering working for this administration - don't make a ill-poor decision in your effort to achieve your goals.

      I disagree with your description of "just an attempt to turn it around and smear him." There is no need to "smear" Scaramucci - he's already a political jester. Frum's question agitated Scaramucci, whether it was Frum's intention or not.

    Scaramucci exhibits the essence of Trumpism: 1) Don't know anything. Act like you know everything. 2) Quote pedigree while dismissing the pedigree in others as elitist. 3) Act insulted, put upon and persecuted while insulting and persecuting others. 4) Attack others for your weaknesses (in this case "anger") 5) Act smug and faux humble while doing all of the above.

    • @jafrocubic2
      @jafrocubic2 Před 6 lety +7

      charger 98 I actually think it is taught. It’s a part of their strategy. I’ve been watching this shit unfold since Bush. There are mannerisms that are almost like they went to seminars to learn this shit.
      1. Keep your cool, know exactly what you’re going to say when the other starts talking, talk fast, talk slightly louder, and don’t shut up the entire time the other person is making a point or responding to your question or asking a question.
      2. When then asked “what?!” because nothing could be heard, change the topic.
      3. When faced with a question where you know your answer must be a lie, start your response with the word “look”.
      4. Lots of shoulder and back pats. Make the guy feel comfortable before you lie to his face.
      5. Talk about family. Start out that way. Ask about how the interviewer’s family is. Compare yours to theirs. Make them comfortable before you lie to them. Make them feel like you’re basically coming from the same place.
      5. Always....ALWAYS talk about your working class background if you have one. No one needs to know you sold your soul along with selling out all the people you grew up with. No one needs to know that the moment you left for Harvard, your immediate thoughts were “thank fuck I never have to see another one of the losers for the rest of my life! Fuck all of you!” They need to think you still care about these people - that you ever cared about these people.
      6. You are the victim. No, shut the fuck up! There is no such thing as pathetic in this party! YOU ARE THE VICTIM! ALWAYS! Never forget that. Live that. You raped someone? You’re the victim - she shouldn’t have dressed that way or come on to you earlier. You beat up a homeless guy with a group of your friends? He scared you. You fucked over an entire segment of the country’s populace? They don’t work hard enough and you can’t keep footing their bill. You get exposed for being a liar? The bullies backed you into a corner. We’ll revisit this. It’s important and it takes a lot of practice. Just remember Republicans: you are always the victim.
      7. This goes along with part 6, always turn it into they’re attacking your family and the sanctity of your home. Remember, you should have at this point already started out with your family. Now put them as if they’re at risk. It’s not just you and your party that is the victim. It’s literally a day to day struggle for individual members of your family as victims.
      8. You’re really a killer, though. Go for the jugular of your opponent every time. Attack their family when possible. Is it a double standard? Of course it is, you dummy! Get it straight!!! We make the double standards, we impose them, and we fucking live by them! They’re our 6th man!!!!
      I could keep going, but you get my point. They all talk like this. Like robots. I believe they are indeed trained. The question is, do Democrats and others start playing the same game in response to this or do they try to fight the same “don’t drop to their level” game that has so far seemingly not worked.

    • @cyninbend
      @cyninbend Před 6 lety

      jafrocubic2, THEY DO go to seminars to learn this stuff! They have books--"How To Argue With A Liberal" was one my mom had--they recommended never letting the lib set the facts--instead push whatever they say to its extreme and make them argue that. You can't be for abortion to protect a mom from a baby that will die because they have no brain, or it's outside the skull and will harm her uterus...they will push you to argue the case of aborting an 8th month "baby" because the mom was too lazy to take her pills. Killing healthy babies, never ones that will die no matter what. Never a 2-month clump of cells. Or with
      welfare--it's healthy lazy people in Cadillacs (Reagan's fave), not disabled people who can't move without pain. There is no halfway, no judgment--it's the ridiculous extreme no one can defend. Having babies for more welfare, not people who are physically challenged.
      With defense, they turn libs into defenseless fools by exaggerating threats, turning libs into America-haters, apologists. So stress your patriotism and love of country--takes that away from them. And be strong--without buying into hurting others, creating enemies... Co-opt THEIR keywords. Strength, Patriotism, pride....
      Remember that when arguing--pull them back to your facts. Ask them if they think whatever--in your facts, not theirs. "No one ever should be helped?" "Should wounded veterans receive benefits?" Your facts, not theirs. Ignore the attacks. Ignore the bs and restate your basic position. Without their silly exaggerations that no one would argue. Say that's silly. You don't hurt those who need something because another might abuse it. Ask for examples, demand sources for stats--and check on the spot. Kills them.

      @Julie W. Wow, I left that comment awhile ago. I almost forgot about this video. Nice digging! You're confusing a "booming economy" with the success of the stock market (ie. Dow Industrials, S&P etc.). In case you didn't know, the high valuation of corporate stocks are largely driven by investor confidence. Tech stocks like Amazon and Tesla are good examples. Their earnings are low relative to their high stock prices. But the underlying economics of America are not that great (eg. the middle class is shrinking, homelessness on the rise in big cities etc.). This is what Trump has inherited from Obama.
      In regards to tax breaks, the "working man and the poor" will not bear most of the burden paying down the deficit. Also, the itemized deductions, which you referred to, mostly affect NY and CA residents in the form of capped property tax deductions. In other words, the "ultra rich" in those states basically have the same effective tax rate. But nothing should stop the anti-tax cut "ultra rich" like Pelosi and Clinton from paying more than their required taxes. Historically, capitalism has been the most effective way to distribute wealth. These tax cuts will take time to trickle down, so be patient. Macroeconomic changes do not happen overnight. Also, by supporting merit-based immigration and strong trade policies, he is helping the little guys. NOW you see!

    Oh, I get it. The Mooch is _auditioning_ ; that's what Frum has picked up on. Hence the comment about ambition.
    Scaramucci has no future in the white house or as an appointee; Trump has pumped and dumped him. Also probably no real future in national politics. He's damn near _done_ .
    So he's using his appearance to generate interest. He's angling for a radio program or maybe a sidekick slot on FOX daytime show or the like. He hasn't got a book to get ghost written, he didn't last nearly long enough, and with Fire and Fury out he's at best coming late to a strong field of rivals.
    This is about him proving he's a proper right-wing gladiator who can talk the talk and troll the libs, because otherwise he's one more blob of self-parodic fail drifting in the wake of the Trumptanic. That's why he's all >=[ at Frum; Frum's set. Frum has a name worth something and crendentials people respect. By comparison the Mooch is an unfortunate nicknamed paired to a fistful of hair gel.

      Thinking out loud here..
      Ok - He's showing, Demonstrating to the American people that the whole Political system is absolutely FoS. (which is probably what the Repubs should be focusing on - pretending like they aren't part of the problem, instead of a wrecking-ball legislative agenda and counting on a rebounding economy to get Trump re-elected..)
      Or a positive example.. (God.. this is kinda hard to come up with off the top of my head..!!) Well shit.. We may not like him, but he has given a voice, a name - He's the geist (ghost) of the zeitgeist of the current state for the Right! He's tapped into the disenfranchisement of the common conservative working class. (Actually, he tapped into both sides - My extremely liberal cousin voted for him, to burn down the system, or at least have HOPE for change after Hillary STOLE the DNC primary.)
      He's FoS, of course, and he doesn't give a shit about anyone other than himself, but there are some new winds blowing throughout the country. That's a good thing, I believe. It's gotta be better than a violent revolution, or a civil war. No..? I think so. It's better, FOR NOW.. Although it may be.. No.. It IS time for a revolution. But perhaps without the violence.. (That'd be nice, if we can avoid it..)

    No one allowed Frum to fully respond to Scaramucci - both during the first full segment of the show and here on "Overtime." It's further disappointing that he was the only guest who did not receive a direct question here on "Overtime." Someone already commented below that Bill lost control of this show. I would have to agree. Someone also wrote that Donna Brazile shouldn't be booked again. I would agree to the extent that she shouldn't be invited to be on the panel. You're asking too much of your audience to be simultaneously willing to set aside her complicity in the 2016 election stealing from Bernie, AND have to listen to a legitimate discussion constantly be trampled on by nonsensical noise. Speaking over others does nothing to further a discussion. Frum is an intellectual blackbelt that should have been allowed to spar with a glorified yellow belt in Scaramucci. It isn't often when this type of opportunity presents itself, and instead, Scaramucci walks away looking like a victim.

      Agree,but in this case his apparently using the rule of 72. I could be wrong,very hard in these kind of settings to really explain,best to keep it as simple as possibly. Good comment Sir.

    Scaramucci is so corrupt, smooth and dishonest making me wonder why he should be invited to the show. Anyone champions for DUMP is unacceptable for me, because they defend the indefensible. They must either have no or bend ethical standards.
