This is a very nice recap for someone like me! Most people are new to the community due to the growth, and don't understand the history of the game, and I always have trouble explaining to them how the community came to be what it is today, so this is a really nice video for that! Thanks!

My dad plays AoE2 to this day. He started over 20 years ago and still loves it. No words can express the joy when he found out about the Steam version.
There seems to be something about those kinds of strategy games that inspires loyalty. My best friend's dad still plays The Settlers III and I myself am faithful to Pharaoh since childhood.

nice video! i remember i knew a guy much older than me when i was pretty young, him and his friends played age of empires (likely the second game that you talk about), i didn't think much of it until now, never really looked into this game before. also funny seeing so many of my nationality playing this, i'm Norwegian.

The "Forest Nothing" maps actually have their origin in the Warcraft 2 community, where they were usually known as "chop". Just like in AoE, its just a lone town center surrounded by an ocean of trees. It's actually a deeply naturalised and almost default map used in competitive Warcraft 2, and honestly one might think of it as an entire subscene, like Dota.
I've always been more of a Warcraft nerd, haha. War3 forever. But I do have a ton of respect for AoE2, and I deeply love AoM

    Great summary :)

My friends played AoE 2 in our AP Comp Sci Classes in High School. I was kind of pushed away from the game due to their toxicity towards me, because while I had played an RTS game, before, they obsessed over driving home the fact that I was bad at AoE 2, and I couldn't convince them to teach me to play by any method other than beating me into the ground with the game, over and over. You mentioned The Huns, though; I'm irl descended from them, and I think I"m gonna have to get the game and learn to play The Huns. I think it'd be fun to see how much I've learned about video games in *checks notes* nearly two and a half decades.

This isn't even the only story of an old game surviving from that era with an active player base intact. In 1997 the turn-based strategy game Emperor of the Fading Suns was released... Half finished and with a promotional campaign so bad the company in charge apologized to the developer. Despite this the game was lore-rich, and had a lot of strategic depth (if played against real people as the A.I. was rudimentary at best). Somehow it developed a community of players. Aided by the developer more-or-less being either unable or unwilling to stop rampant piracy in the ensuing years, a large number of demo disks floating around, and PBEM capabilities, it maintained a small cult following. In 2020 it was released on GoG. And in 2022 it received two patches: one fixing the swarm of bugs this game had and one adding missing features and making modding easier.

It's insane how DauT is still a prominent figure in the AoE2 community after all those years. And yet, despite having been a pro-player for so long, you can tell he's still having fun playing the game, especially when he's playing team games with his fellow GamingLegion members. The community doesn't call him Lord DauT for nothing.
I saw as a reply to another comment that you might revisit the subject. I'm sure you'd find new things to talk about considering even AoE4 couldn't really make the community move on from this game. And the fact that they ported AoE1 with the Return of Rome expension to its engine is something wild that I've never seen another game do before.

There's a saying I love, "Beware the old man in the profession where most die young," and Lord Daut is no exception. Many people rag on his age, lack of speed, and micro, but because of his sheer expertise and strategy, he can still win tournaments.

As someone still playing a game from 2007 every weekend (S4 League on the S4MAX server in my case) I love seeing a 1999 game still being alive like this. While I don't expect us to ever get any re-release, the community has figured out a fair bit on making custom maps and the likes so new content is still occasionally trickling in. Maybe the little S4 community can be stubborn enough to one day get such a video somewhere too. Time will tell :)

I remember playing AoE 2 on my parents’ computer and really enjoying it, spending hours exploring the world (I especially liked exploring the ocean in the ships) and finding the other civilisations. I was too young to really know what I was doing though and I didn’t realise there was a campaign mode. But I loved the gameplay regardless and later in life, found and played mobile games that seemed to be AoE’s spiritual successor (such as Polytopia). I got gamepass recently and found AoE 2 was on there, remembered playing it so downloaded it out of curiosity and was overwhelmed by nostalgia. And then, later, they released a console version, which I also downloaded and played (it wasn’t quite as good and the controls were slightly weird, but I appreciated the care that was taken in porting it to the console anyway).

This is a great video that I really enjoyed, but I'd I could give one point of criticism, I would really advise to change the title format for this series. Maybe for something like "The History Of [game name/game's community]", or "How [game name]'s Community Prevailed". I know it may sound more generic, but it would more accurately describe what the video is actually about. I love Videos like these! Mini video essays or history lessons on things I never knew about! A lot of people have this type of videos play in the background or second monitor sort of like podcasts, and even tho I'm basicislly the target audience, the title threw me off and I was about to just look past this video. "X game is still Alive!" didn't really exite me? I knew nothing about this game so I didn't know why that should be remarkable, or wethwr it's good or bad that it's still going in the first place. I'm not sure how to properly explain myself here, and it's just my feelings towards the title so of course it's not universal, but I'd hate for this series to go overlooked just because of the title :( I think it would also fit better with the naming convention of the rest of your videos on this channel! I hope Thai doesn't come of as rude, and again, I really loved the video! :)

It's not rude at all: in fact, its great advice. These older videos were all experimental ones, made before I started with earnest efforts. I may have to revisit Age of Empires 2 at some point in the future!
