For diving with the Sony AZ1, use the MPKUWH1 case to achieve under water focus. record button will work. cut foam for the back and bottom. works great.
Great work! I've really been enjoying your great side-by-side comparisons! Curious if you recommend any of these cameras for POV/teaching/arms length style. Would there be too much lens and/or minimum focus distance issues? Thanks for any help!
as far as battery life, was that with wifi on/off and how long does it take to recharge each?
PLEASE, compare the Session with the HDR-AS50! I'm really between those two and cannot find a comparison anywhere!
Awesome review as always! The AZ1 is my personal favorite. I also think the AZ1 is easily one of the best, if not thee best sounding action cams currently on the market.
+PocketableTech If the AZ1 had an external mic port like the AS200V, it'd be a killer helmet camera.
I'm really considering buying one but I'm afraid the waterproof case will ruin it for me
Hey Mark....I have one question??? Does the Sony AZ1 split the video like the GOPRO??? So, if I record with the AZ1 does the video all stay on one video file and I do not HAVE to stitch it back together like the GOPRO.
I was so DISAPPOINTED about the GOPRO....I recorded 25 minutes of video and it broke it into 3 separate files on my SD card.
I returned the GOPRO because I was soooo disappointed with having to stitch videos back together.
So, in order for me to have my 25 minute video stitched back together I would have to purchase Sony Vegas for $300 and that is out of control!!!
So, I want to buy the Sony AZ1 if the camera records videos all in one file. :-) I hope you can answer this question because I would love to buy one ASAP :-)
I hope to hear back from you soon....Montana John
wow, I appreciate all the work that was put into this incredible comparison! Would have loved to see more of the apps since that is the only way to review footage in the field. Apparently, the gopro app can't playback all of the different recording formats on a phone. I am wondering what those formats would be.
True about the GoPro. I forget what the limit is but I believe it's 120fps and higher and possibly 4k footage. Possibly Protunes footage on all but the session won't stream as well.
Thank you very much
Thats amazimg! Exactly the same shots from same angles at the exactly the same time (notice everything inclooding cars are at the same spot with No differens) only with diferent processing!! . omg think i'll buy them both!
We have multiple cameras on a rig and have some stuff at the start of each clip to make syncing fairly accurate.
Hey! I am looking to buy an action cam, and I am stuck between the Hero 4 Session and the Hero + LCD. I can get both cameras at around the same price so the price is not the issue. I have not found any videoes that compares the two because the session used to cost 399 USD and was naturally compared to the Hero 4 Silver because of the price. Can anyone help me out with which one to buy?
+Jørgen Christiansen We are working on a comparison of the Session and +LCD. Might be a while. But in the mean time I do discuss both of these cameras in our Best of 2015/2016 video: czcams.com/video/Sfd4JpWhY6E/video.html&lc=z133x5xptljqcfeiw04cfnpgro34dnix0uo0k
I do a lot of offroading and rock crawling and want to start filming my trail runs, but I also want a camera that works well as a dash cam. I want to mount my camera inside my vehicle and outside my vehicle. I really like the image stabilization of the Sony. Battery life does not matter to me as long as I can record while charging. I would like a camera that's compatible with large memory SD cards. What would your suggestion be?
Also, I really like the Sony here. Price point is great. I would like something just like it with the stabilization but without such an extreme fish eye effect.
hi mark, I would like to know the difference between Gp hero4 session and Gp Session, are they the same camera?
Renne Brasil same camera. Hero 4 Session was just renamed to Hero Session.
Nice Test thank you . I have to choose between this 2 Actioncams and i choose before i see your Video the Sony 80€ the Cam plus the remote in the Bay ❤️ so cheap
Hey mark, can you do a Sony AZ1 vs Sony HDR-AS200v comparison? Thanks man!
+Charlie Cannistraci Sure, here you go: czcams.com/video/jbdGNUkPGJA/video.html
OK i have a little bit of a tricky question. I have been looking at both of these cameras for quite a while and am wondering what to get? i live an active life style including lots of water sports but am also a semi pro cyclist and am wanting to mount it onto my road bike. I would like to have the image stabilization of the Sony for bumpy roads but also need the camera to be waterproof and able to record whenever. i guess my question is what one should i chose (maybe even the Hero) and is there some cheap editing software anyone knows about that will stabilize your go pro video?
+Mitch Ketler Both cameras have free software. If you ever want to go beyond that I suggest AdoBe Premiere Pro CC which you can rent online fairly easily. Powerful and easy to get up to speed with 1-2 10 minute tutorials.
If you can wait, Sony has a new Action Cam coming out Feb 21st called the AS50. Might offer some compelling new features for $199. GoPro also has some things in store for March or April but no one knows what. Might be unlikely that a new camera would be announced but they will unveil some VR rigs and a Drone known as the Karma. Small chance some other accessories or announcements will be there. One thing I like about the Hero4 Session is the 1440 resolution. When cycling you are never pointed to far down or up insuring you always capture the areas you want. Sony's field of view is super wide though so good chance it'll capture that too with the built in stabilization. Not sure how much support the AZ1 will have (Quite old and Sony's not the best with continued support) but it's still a solid buy and most of GoPro's mounts will would with Sony's provided you get a rec mount adapter.
Hope this helps :D
+MarkHawkCam Thank you so much for the reply! I think i will wait for the new Sony cam. one last question... can you make your go pro video more steady in Sony's or gopros free editing software or is that something you will have to pay for?
+Mitch Ketler Don't think GoPro studio has any stabilization features. GoPro Studio might be getting an update in March/April when they launch there VR rig though.
At 12:00 you're recording indoor. But the sony image seems to be so dark . . . was it because you did turn off the light ? Which is the best cam to record indoor with low light ? the Session hero or the sony az1 ?
+hello world Generally the Sony cameras give you better low light conditions. This might be because it sees the brighter monitors in the center and balances out the picture with that center area in mind. The GoPro is more likely taking areas around the monitor into consideration while it adjusting it's exposure then the Sony in this scenario.
Hi Mark, any plans for doing Hero4 Session vs Sony HDR-AS50 ? Thanks for the great videos!
Filmed most of it already just trying to get access to a pool or large body of water for the final parts.
Cool. Thanks Mark!
Is this "sun-reflection" a problem when filming with the GPH4S?
+NicGaming Refresh my memory. Are we talking about the lens flares or the brightness appearance of the sun. Been doing a lot of videos lately that I don't recall what I said about sun reflections exactly.
MarkHawkCam The sun flare.
Sony az1 records in 1080p 60fps?
yes
which one would be better to mount to a quadcopter?
+flymonk001 Both might be poor choices. The AZ1's lens distortion might be a bit extreme even with stabilization. There is also a good discussion on reddit on what to look out for with the Hero4 Session here: www.reddit.com/r/Multicopter/comments/3vf2h2/gopro_session_drops_to_200_pretty_solid_camera/
+MarkHawkCam I went with the as200 because I need the stabilisation and in 120° it does not look like it warps much.
Thank you for this test. I too think it is unacceptable, that there is no flat-lense for the AZ1
+NicMediaDesign There has to be a reason right? They built in an underwater mode to the az1. Asked them a few times but never heard any response as to why.
can you do the session vs the hero + ???
+Fabian Bakker (fjbakker) Just started filming it today actually. On ther Que is AS50 Vs AZ, AS50 vs AS200V, and then Hero4 Session vs Hero+(LCD) (almost identical to + only), Hero4 Session vs Hero (2014), and round it up with the AS50 vs all these cameras...
I've committed to much here :p
Thank you :D
The biggest reason why Sony AZ1 can joutperform the GoPro Hero4 Session in low light is because Hero4 Session uses a smaller 1/3.2" (Diagonal size 5.7mm) sensor with 1.4µm vs 1/2.3" (7.8mm) sensor with around 1.55µm.
what's your favourite camera?
+zisis klb23 I think he prefers the GoPro cameras over Sony since they are usable for underwater footage right out the box. Sony is a little bit stupid when it comes to this.
I bought both
hero 4 ss or 3+ silver ? :D
+Bao Linh Depends on the person or events. Nice thing about the Session is you'll never really forget anything at home. No batteries to worry about or cases... Just less getting in the way of the adventure. That being said the Hero3+ Silver is a really nice camera. Easy to use, good on battery life, good FPS, really sharp up close focus. But it's missing things like ProTune. Session can't swap out batteries. There are less mounts available for the Session bit I think this will balance out over time.
Session:
Good color profile
Simple/Powerful
Always good to go
Quality is good/fair
Smaller but thicker
Silver:
More mounting options
Okay color profile
Great up close sharpness
Batteries can be swapped throughout needed
It's a tough choice. I'd weigh in the battery concerns and size. Video quality you'd go back on forever. Audio can be better on both depending on the events but silver has easier flexibility. People are very positive on there 3+ Silver but I see a lot of people mixed about the Session. Might be worth considering waiting for the Session 2 though. Been a common question but this is my 2 cents.
thank you for your reply :) maybe i will wait :D
Again, not much of a comparison between these two. The Sonys are just so much better with image quality, esp color and detail clarity. No need to fix up your footage afterwards in post production as with the Gopros. And lens distortion with the Sony is only noticeable when bobbing up and down or panning rapidly in ultra wide angle view. But why would any camera operator want to do that anyway? And the Gopro looks pretty bad then too. That is not a normal way of shooting.
Sony for the Win!
When it comes to colour sony is always better than gopro :)
It’s a camera first and foremost ... and the Sony image blows away the crappy GoPro - no comparison.
A Sony saiu melhor, Sony win's
Fucking enunciate.
