  • The Force Awakens didn't start getting badmouthed until it had broken all the records. Usually, I suggest that maybe the critics were wrong with their negativity. The. Critics. Are. Wrong. J.J. Abrams brought Star Wars back to its glory days. Here's everything right with Star Wars Ep VII The Force Awakens. In a few days my thank you to all of YOU for getting this channel to 1000 subs!

      @@Risenophdude that's actually one of the plot points from Legends Palpatine clones are something that they brought back so yeah anyone who knew Legends well enough would probably have expected snoke(I sure as hell did since I already knew about the whole palpatine clone thing even though it was a subconscious thought until they revealed that yes snoke was a palpatine clone)to be a palpatine clone anyways. the only thing that was off about it was that they didn't establish palpatine having cloning facilities for himself in this trilogy they just expect people to know from Legends since it's one of the more famous plot points. I rejoiced when I learned that they were using this plot point in the movies since it's something that is clearly established and explained in the Legends books meaning that anything in regards to palpatine's cloning facilities could be used there hell we probably haven't even seen the last of the palpatine in the freaking rise of Skywalker since yeah he has cloning facilities

    One thing that's great about TFA was how the trailer thoroughly tricked us to think that Finn is the main character. The one introduced first? Finn. The one who held blue lightsaber in the trailer? Finn. The one that got most show time in the trailer? Finn.

      Me! It was kinda funny to see his theories about Obi-Wan being Rey's father (theories which I was already familiar with, of course), but he also got a lot right about the future of the ST, what with wondering whom Kylo was talking to, saying he was "maybe more" than a villain, even Snoke being in the empire business.

(And this one is just me) I'm fine with showing less of Rey training. I've seen Jedi trained to death by this point and honestly just want to see new stuff at this point and not waste film time showing her train. Jedi training is like Bruce Wayne's parents dying or uncle ben getting shot....I know it's happened and I don't need to see it anymore.
      That's just me though, everyone has their own opinions.
      And (once again this is just me) Luke dying the way he did was perfection. He had lost his hope but force projected himself to give the rebels a chance to escape and become the legend everyone thought he was. To each their own though.

    Actually, I CAN win the death of Han Solo. It was necessary for Kylo Ren to become a credible villain. I mean, to the characters in the film, he already is, but to the audience, he's got to measure up to DARTH VADER, and that's damn near impossible to do. In order for Kylo to be a credible villain to US, he needs to do something truly villainous TO US... and nothing could be more villainous than killing Han Solo. Think about this... We like Chewie, but we don't connect with him like we do to a human character. Killing him wouldn't mean as much to us as killing one of the human characters. Luke and Leia are both Force sensitive, so we know that killing them only makes them one with the Force; they're not "really" dead. Not so with Han Solo. He's NORMAL. Kill him, he's DEAD, gone forever. Add in that he's arguably the most likable, popular character, and the murder of Han Solo becomes the most evil thing Kylo Ren could possibly inflict on the audience. Without this, Kylo Ren remains a poser.
    Therefore, this is a WIN because it makes the villain a REAL villain.

    I feel like Rey's reaction to Finn coming back for and rescuing her goes really unappreciated because of the fact that no one else has ever come back for her. So Finn coming back and even breaking into an enemy base, going to the exact place he said he wanted to run away from at all costs, was the most touching thing in the world for Rey and really sealed the deal on their friendship. At first, I thought they would be the romance of the trilogy based off that one moment and the head kiss later, but after TLJ... yeah no, Reylo till the ends of the fucking earth. The problem is that people WANT to hate films. People want to find things wrong with it, even if Episode 8 is the next Empire Strikes back I guarantee you, people will dislike it.
    Now, people are entitled to their opinion; it's what makes them special as individual people. I would not take that way from them on any day of my life, but you have to understand that critic is someone who looks at a film in a un-biased way and gives it a score based on the effort, technical's, and results.
    Let me show you an example: Billy says " I think Kylo Ren's lightsaber should be blue, not red. This movie sucks. "
    You are allowed to think this, but to say the film failed in that regard is simply incorrect. It is not fair to reduce a point based on a perspective that is horribly subjective.
    Let's compare the protaganist of A New Hope to The Force Awakens for a second. Darth Vader. He was a menacing, towering figure of power. He ''murdered' Anakin Skywalker, Luke's father. That's all you know.
    Kylo Ren is a emotionally distraught Knight of Ren that commands the First order. His father, Han Solo left after Ben Solo, Kylo Ren's true name, murdered all of Luke's students. He is trying to be the leader and fearsome foe that Vader was, but is struggling in the path to stability.
    After murdering his father, he realizes that in his lust for power and comfort, it brought only more sadness and remorse, lessening his power in the Dark Side.
    Now, I will be bold by saying this, but in my critical opinion, I think that Kylo Ren is a better villain than Darth Vader. I am not arguing if he is cooler or was better as films goes by, but since we are comparing the one thing that everyone else is comparing him to, I will do so accordingly. He simply has more depth and motivation for what he does. he's a person
    How about we compare Han Solo to Old Ben? I am treading on thin Ice, I know!
    But consider; the death of Han Solo has more meaning because we have had THREE films to develop him. This is not the same as Vader vs Kylo, because whereas Vader got more depth later, Han ALREADY had depth.
    His death carried much more meaning than Obi-wan did in the same film. We felt more sad as the rest of the films came by for Ben, but again, we are only comparing present and past films.
    The practical effects are numerous, and look amazing. And yet, the CGI in some areas actually looks more realistic then the practical ones!! excluding Snoke and Maz.
    The action is a mix of the prequels and the originals: Fast, but realistic. Brutal, yet majestic. Emotional, yet the choreography is great.
    The acting is just phenomenal. Daisy Riddley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Issac, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, are simply flawless. And I mean that. Perfect.
    The pacing is kept fast too. No pee-break scenes, and it is not too long and drawn out.
    The cinematography is amazing. Though my only complaint being at the end, with the helicopter camera spinning around Rey and Luke. Not a fan of that shot.
    The writing was smart, in that they switched up elements but kept it safe to start their new franchise. Though I view it as a squeal, many will view it as a reboot. To each their own.
    I am not joking, from a critic's standpoint, this is a near flawless film. On a technical level, it's a masterpiece.
    Now of course, no movie is flawless. The rathars were a little too CGI, along with Maz and Snoke. I thought that Captain Phasma would be the next Boba Fett. I was right, for the wrong reasons; she was beat up. Not dead but just.. tossed aside like a bubble gum wrapper. Also, sometimes, I felt like the fast pace was a little too much; little time was given to calm down and just chill. Call that a flaw or a plus, I think it's leaning towards a flaw more like.
    These are my issues. As you can see, the pros FARRR outweigh the cons. For my own score, if I may indulge a bit, is a very happy and solid 9/10.

      @utubrGaming Před 7 lety +7

      I actually don't mind the film. The issue is that it feels like it took too many elements of the Original Trilogy merely for nostalgia's sake. From a nobody in a desert planet with a mysterious family past, to the planet-destroying Dark-side base, to the basic designs of ships and clothing, it all seems to resemble the OT more than standing on its own. While this can make sure that these are the natural evolution of the OT's design and advancement, subverting from the sterile scenes and setpieces of Episodes I-III, It also feels like the design team was afraid of pushing the boundaries of 30 years of design advancement.
      For example, the Order's shuttle was an oversized version of the Imperial Shuttle, albeit without the central fin. The First Order fighter was a recolored version of the TIE. The X-Wing of the Resistance has no difference other than its intakes being semicircular. Their star destroyers seem to be only modified versions of the old design. The venerable stormtrooper armor seemed to have little difference from their cloned predecessors, rather than a black line from their eye-holes to their breathing apparatuses.
      In short, it seemed to be nostalgia for nostalgia's sake.

      Yeah I didn't want to start a flame war, so thank you all for not getting angry at me!
      Jake Everett Terpening, yeah I'm not saying in my opinion Darth Vader was not a good villain. It's just what you are looking for in a antagonist ( in my original post I called them a '' protagonist '' my bad! ).
      Let me address what you said specifically, " Plot convenience ". I am going to blow yours and my mind with what I am about to say, as I am a Star wars fanboy and I usually let my brain kick in to justify just about every aspect of the film - even the prequels!
      You're right!
      When filmmakers are in the makings of their creation, they are not interested in making a film nitpick-proof. I've written my own stuff before, and take it from in that when you do it, you are no longer concerned about making a emotionally attached film but a fan service film.
      For instance, they probably, in creation of Kylo Ren, said this " He needs to be a new kind of villain. A obsessive and insecure one, while still menacing "
      If they said instead, " Kylo needs to be better villain than Vader. He needs to kick butt and make him look like a punk! " They are more worried about what the more thorough fans will have to say, rather then making him a good villain!
      I could reference the book and my theories and justifications about why Kylo was defeated by Rey, but ultimately it's what you, the audience, feel emotionally connected to. I will not make you suddenly like the fight if I tell you Kylo is a Shi-cho user strictly.

      UtubrGaming, well I'd say that they did this to introduce newcomers to Star wars. See, I'm sixteen, and I did not get to see the Original Trilogy for the first time. I just had the DVD's later on, and was able to watch it then.
      What this film provides is a introduction for the newer generation. It's a smart move on the filmmaker's side, because imagine if they just decided to pick up where ROTJ left off with completely new elements in the first movie of their new trilogy?
      People would complain about what this film has exactly: elements of the original trilogy.
      It's also playing it safe. They risk less with completely new things, and with it being soo long since we got a great Star wars film, we are less likely to not enjoy it - which is exactly what some people are doing!
      I encourage you to put yourself in J.J Abrams' shoes. He's a very talented director but he's also experienced, in that he will know what to expect from us.
      Mark my words, in Episode eight, they'll be allowed to get away with a lot of things. And it's taking two years in development - plenty of time to polish it up for us picky fans!

    Couldn't agree more on the Mary Sue points.
    The funny thing is, she actually makes more sense than Luke did. Almost everything we see Luke do in all of the original movies is never explained how he learned it. I actually remember being a little kid watching Empire for the very first time thinking "Wait, how did he learn how to levitate objects?" when he pulls his lightsaber out of the snow at the beginning. Yoda never teaches him how to use a lightsaber, and yet he goes and fights Vader pretty damn well. And he uses the mind trick on Bib Fortuna in Jedi, again, seemingly out of nowhere.
    But I think the point is that once you're in tune with the force, it acts similar to the spider sense that Peter Parker has. You just know certain things because the force tells you them. The problem with the prequels is that they made the idea of being a jedi out to be like some sort of spartan training camp where you study in combat from a young age. But I don't think that's really what Kasdan was going for when he wrote Empire. I think the point Yoda was making is that the spiritual stuff is far more important, and renders the physical stuff virtually meaningless. In IV, when Luke is training with Ben, as soon as he lets go and just listens to the force, he blocks three shots in a row. Ben tells him to "act on instinct." Same thing with Rey. She starts listening to the force and starts discovering her abilities.
    People who have a problem with the Rey/Kylo fight are looking at it like it some sort of video game. As if Kylo has 100 force points and Rey only has 12, so he should have won. But I just think that's totally the wrong way to look at it. Rey won (it was more of a tie actually) because she finally gave herself into the force, just like Luke did when he switched off the targeting computer and blew up the Death Star. That's her arc. She goes from being self-reliant to realizing that she's part of something larger, much like Han's arc in IV was finally believing in the force.
    TL;DR Force Awakens is awesome. Fuck the haters.

      Relative to Her forebears and possible ancestors Anakin and Luke, Rey is a Mary Sue.
      Episode I. Anakin is a tag along kid, a sidekick for all of the film. His only real victory the Pod race would not have been possible without the help of Qui-gon Jin who told him how "see" on purpose. The Destruction of the Droid control ship was pure dumb luck rather than some deliberate action on Anakin's part.
      Episode II. Anakin fails or at the very least stumbles through the story, with only a few moments of looking heroic.
      And at the end he loses his confrontation with a Dark sider badly, he is electrocuted and has his arm cut off at the elbow.
      Episode III. Anakin is only heroic during the beginning of the film after that its all down hill from there for him.
      He is put upon,manipulated and finally goes to the Dark Side and begins destroying everything that he once held dear.
      In the end he is beaten,crippled and left for dead by his former mentor.
      Episode IV. Luke is just along for the ride, accomplishes little without outside intervention. Han is more of a proactive hero than Luke is through out the film. Luke's true achievement in the film doesn't come without outside intervention.
      Episode V. Luke is captured and nearly killed during the beginning of the film, has to be rescued from dying
      of hypothermia by Han. While Luke is heroic during the battle of Hoth, he sits out the majority of the film as he
      trains on Dagoba. Luke latter attempt to overcome Darth Vader...only to beaten and lose his right hand.
      Episode VI. Luke is only really successful during the beginning first third of the film. he is a liability on Endore and subsequently leaves. Luke confronts Darth Vader but only wins do to succumbing to rage, however does't defeat the Emperor in a martial sense, he scores a moral victory however. In the martial since Luke loses the battle and is on the floor slowly being electrocuted. The people that actually win the day are Lando and Wedge two mere mortals.
      Ray succeeds through out the course of the film and makes gain after gain, without experiencing major set backs or requiring significant effort.

      As I see it, Rey has no flaws. That makes her a really boring character that no one can relate to. She's the living embodiment of bad character writing.
      At least Luke and Anakin had flaws.

    • @irishman6414
      @irishman6414 Před 8 lety +35

      Fanfiction Scrutinizer I don't see why you would say she doesn't have any flaws. I don't think you were paying attention.
      I'd say her biggest flaw, and the thing she ultimately overcame in the final fight, was her overconfidence. It's like what Luke said: "Your overconfidence is your weakness."
      The entire movie we see her constantly saying things like "I know how to run without you holding my hand." She didn't know how to accept help from others or really how to deal with not being in charge. In the Falcon while hiding, she tries to mess with the wires and ends up letting the Rathtars loose -- so much for being perfect, eh? When she goes to try to save Finn, Kylo picks her up and slams her against a tree. During the fight, she's barely keeping up, and basically running away. She's realizing she doesn't have the strength on her own to win this fight, and that she's in over her head. The reason she wins is her realization that she hasn't been doing all of this on her own. It's not her own strength that's allowed her to come this far; it was the force. By digging deep and allowing herself to listen to the force and allow it to take control of her, she's completing her character arc. She goes from being totally self-reliant to reliant on the force, which mirrors Luke's arc in A New Hope when he turns off his targeting computer and destroys the Death Star.
      That, sir, is NOT a Mary Sue. That is a fully-fleshed out, three dimensional character with a perfectly good arc. I figured all this out the first time I saw it in the theater. So, like I said, it makes me think you weren't paying attention, or you decided you hated it before you even saw it.

    When people say Rey is a Mary Sue I'm just like really? She can fight because like he said, she's been in her own her whole life and needed to learn how to fend for herself. She's good with mechanics because she regularly scavenges for mechanical parts! Never mind that she's also Force sensitive, giving her talents and knowledge beyond those that aren't She is very much like a female version of Luke, just because she's a main character and female that doesn't make her a Mary Sue.
    Plus, it's mostly boys saying this. "I can't relate to her!" Well how fucking sad for you. I doubt a lot of girls could empathize with Anakin and his constant whinging, or Luke, or Obi-Wan, or the other male characters. Literally the only female characters we ever got to look up to were Leia and that one female general. Like at least give us a fucking choice of female characters!
    Rey is so important to young girls. They now have another badass Star Wars hero that they can look up to who isn't just there to be a plot device. Rey is amazing and tbh most of the complaints are because of her gender. If she was a guy there would be much less whining from the fanboys.

      Besides, it's been proven that people tend to look up to and emulate role models if they can relate to them in some way e.g. same gender. same race etc.

      @@Tyler-rj6zy No worries, bro; I've legit seen worse. The prequels and sequels are total opposites in terms of what they do better and worse. The prequels expands the Star Wars universe vastly, yet fail to garner audiences in terms of the execution for many fans complained of the lack of backstories some characters of events have, claiming to having to access external materials like comics is not justifiable. On the other hand, the sequels are great films if we're talking about action and thrill, but lacks the depth of story the prequels possess. The original trilogy is somewhat in the middle of both, which is probably why it's well-praised.

      Lai Yin Quan I for one like the prequels except for AOTC. The only problem that I had with the prequels was the cgi and a lot of people agree with that. The reason they used it so much was because Lucas wanted to expand the universe. If they used more classic Star Wars prop making mixed with cgi(and better acting in episode two)the prequels would’ve been amazing. But I agree with you on everything else. TLJ is a good movie by itself but in the sense that it’s the middle of a trilogy and supposed to be accomplishing storytelling it’s not great at. The only arc that it made for a character was Poe learning to be a leader. Rey really didn’t learn anything on the island that was usable. The only she got from the island was the Jedi texts. But I enjoyed ROS and I’m so upset J.J didn’t do all the films. My god that was long.

      I don't hate this movie, I kinda like it, but it's "meh" to me. Not bad, not awesome.
      So I'll tell you what I like and dislike about this movie.
      Sins:
      - The old crew will aways be better (:V)
      - Kylo Ren was not a good vilain. I mean, why did they replace Darth Vader with this emo?! I just want him to fuck off (probably something happens and ends his life. If not now, it has to happen in Episode IX, I hope).
      - Also, his theme is not even close to be as good as the Imperial March.
      - Not a very original plot.
      - I knew Han Solo would end up dying, but the worst thing is knowing he got killed by his stubborn son.
      - The way this "bad guy" worships Vader, but acts like a teenager with a lot of life and identity problems... No sir. Just stop it.
      - Ok, I told you Kylo was "emo", but it seems like that's not all. He got beaten up by someone who didn't even train for it, and even if Rey is powerful with the Force, he has practiced for years! Geez, man, how much can you make me hate you?!
      Wins:
      - Rey is badass. She cares about her family, but still knows the right thing to do when she stopped fooling herself and accepted they wouldn't come back.
      - Han Solo OMG (even though he's dead now ;-;) Also, Luke and Leia.
      - Okay, Kylo Ren sucks, but he got an awesome lightsaber there, gotta admit!
      - This movie has a stormtrooper who decided to change his life (COME ON, HOW COOL IS THAT?)
      - Anakin's lightsaber. One word: Nostalgic

    I think Medichlorians are *attracted* to the force and do not create it. They seemed like another reason to believe the Jedi became disillusioned with the force and focused more on politics than they should have.

    • @ianwalker6546
      @ianwalker6546 Před 6 lety +42

      Exactly. The Jedi of the prequel era had turned the Force into a dogma that they used to maintain power - in that sense Palpatine was right. It took Order 66 and the subsequent exile for them to rediscover their connection to the natural force, in time for Obi-Wan and Yoda to train Luke. Why would a Jedi need a midichlorian count to confirm a force-sensitive being - they would just know it. The replacement of gut feelings with rules and mechanisms is part of why they fell.

      Tom Barnes I thought the midichlorians attaching to someone's bloodstream is considered a symptom of being a Force sensitive. In fact, The Force does hold and maybe create life together. It holds the balance. As for the life aspect, bacteria which are the Midichlorians are the very foundation of life, like one celled beings in our time evolve into bigger creatures.

Then came the shocker that he was Vader's grandson from some political rival of Leia's who revealed her to be Vader's daughter. Totally agree with all points in the video, *except* the "Rey might be Obi-Wan's daughter" theory. Obi-Wan died when Luke, Leia and Han were still young (approx. 30 years before The Force Awakens). There's no way Rey (played by a 23 year old) is meant to be 30+ years old. If Obi-Wan had a secret son or daughter that we didn't know about, she could conceivably be that person's daughter... maybe. Other than that, loved this video. When people started crawling out of the woodwork to criticise this movie, I used these exact same reasons to jump to its defence. LOVED it.

And he also says, "One more hint to Rey's *father* - who was the first person to use the Jedi Mind Trick in a very similar fashion?" I was simply disagreeing that Obi-Wan couldn't possibly be Rey's father. I did say in my comment, however, that it's possible she is his granddaughter.

This will be the only movie in the new trilogy that will emulate so much from another. It had to succeed in the task of showing people how Star Wars had returned to its core, the grassroots. The "this is a remake" argument won't be valid for Episodes VIII and IX, because they will take us out of the comfort zone this film had to put audiences in; The comfort zone of practical effects, Han Solo, and everything else mentioned in this video. The comfort zone that this film absolutely needed to be a commercial success.

    • @JavierGomezX
      @JavierGomezX Před 6 lety +9

      Hugh Jarce - I am tired of hearing that argument, because the quality of a film is not defined by how "Original" it is. Art receives props for creativity, an it can be portrayed in many ways. Take the "Mona Lisa" for example; It is a painting of a lady... Do you know how many paintings of ladies exist in this world? We even see Ladies in REAL LIFE. So, why is it a masterpiece? Because it´s not about something that was never done before or about being original, it´s about portraying it in a way that captivates differently. It´s about how you make it, and Film-making is just another art form.
      The Original Star Wars was already using a lot of "Tropes" that were used in the past. The typical "evil army" (that was a direct reference to the Nazis), the typical war between good and evil, the typical band of misfits, the typical small rebellion who upholds "freedom"; lots of things that have been done before. But what matters is how you work with what you chose to use and the results of it.
      I can even go further and say that the similarities between Episode IV and Episode VII were done on purpose to make a point about fate and how the force works or something like that (because art is subject to interpretation). Even Han-Solo, when presented with the plans of the "Death Star 3.0" at the Mission brief, says blatantly, and I QUOTE: "So? It´s Big". EVEN HIM acknowledge there is a complete parallel between the present and the past. The characters are Self-aware that it´s the same thing.

      Citation needed on the ruining everything bit. Yeah, the First Order blew up the capitol, but the Republic itself lives on. I get the sense that they're a new threat wearing old colors. And to be frank, thinking everything is hunky-dory just because Palpatine bit it is dumb and unrealistic, and the Expanded Universe makes that clear too. And as shown, some elements are the same (the Star Killer isn't a win for a reason), but the actors and circumstances are quite different.

It would be awesome to see Anakin's and Obi-Wan's grandchildren fighting, but still I think they are probably going with the Rey Random. Since she is the first real female protagonist of Star Wars, they wouldn't risk it to make her bloodline 'define' her.

      I think of it as a science vs faith thing. Some people try to explain mysteries in life through science while others rely on faith and acts of God. Qui-gon Jinn probably learned about the force from a biological explanation, or it's the explanation he preferred best. Obi-Wan probably heard both explanations, but didn't want to overwhelm Luke at first with all the details, so he told him the simpler, faith-based explanation of the force, but never got a chance to tell him the rest, since he died. As for Yoda, he is just further training Luke to channel the force better, so he doesn't need to tell him about the biological origins of it. After that, Luke is now the only living Jedi left, so all he knows is the faith-based explanation. Either way, who's to say which explanation is correct, if not both. I myself prefer the force to be a mystery.

      She's a mary sue.
      As everyone else here has stated. New about the force for a few hours. Never weilded a Lightsaber before (Yes she wielded a STAFF. Much different from a Vibroblade and Lightsaber). She said she flew ships before but never left the planet (Which isn't possible. Flying a ship in orbit to get around isn't something you do, thats called piloting a speeder. So she hasn't flown a ship before.
      Mary Sue Attributes:
      Never Piloted a Ship before (Was a god at it)
      Defeated a Trained Dark Side User who was trained in Lightsaber and Force combat.
      There are more but for sake of keeping the attributes equal I am not going to add any more.
      Anti-Mary Sue Attributes:
      Was left on a planet by her parents (Did you ever notice how the ship we see flying away from her looks oddly similar to the one we see Leia arrive in later on in the movie)
      Lost her Father Figure
      As for Luke, People could say "Oh, he is a mary sue (most people think that can only relate to women. No. It can relate to both Male and Female) character because he...."
      He what? What has he done in his first movie that was some great feat. Blew up the Deathstar? Yes, He did. After training half his life to be a pilot on the side lines of working as a moisture farmer for his uncle. So we know he has past experience in air combat.
      As for Anakin, He was the burden of a prophecy corrupted by evil. In the first movie he flys a ship similar to a pod racer (as he states) and blows up a Droid Blockade Ship from the inside. So yes. He could be titled a mary sue character UNTIL we get to ATOC in which we see his no so mary sue life. Internal Struggle for the love of Padme and the Life of his mother slipping from his hands as he murders a pack of Sandpeople because of it.
      YES, REY IS A MARY SUE!

    • @vidarDJ16starkill
      @vidarDJ16starkill Před 7 lety +5

      The problem with much of that argument is that Kylo wasn't trying to kill Rey but convert her to his side. So he could have been Mace MotherF***ing Windu and the lightsaber fight would have been the same, he was just playing with her, getting her to be tired, and getting her to feel emotions, not actually trying to kill or really defeat her. So her basic melee weapon skills combined with Kylo holding back is why she didn't get killed.
      She piloted ships around the planet. Ships fly around the planet within atmosphere to move cargo and passengers around all the time. Plus she isn't great at piloting the ship as you can see her make plenty of mistakes, the thing is because she is force sensitive she has better reflexes and so can pilot the ship through those wrecks and stuff because she can sense when to turn the ship and such.
      A Mary Sue is a character who reveals their ability only when they need it. All of Rey's abilities are explained or shown before she needs them. She is not a Mary Sue. Now she COULD be an Overpowered character, which is VERY different and honestly is what most people seem to be mistaking the term Mary Sue for.
      As for Luke being a Mary Sue. Well he is shown to be an average farm boy, but then when they need pilots to attack the death star he suddenly is revealed to have piloting skills. We don't see him using those skills before, and are simply told he has them in the scene right before they are needed. That puts it on the line of being a Mary Sue. When Rescuing Leia he sure does a lot of heroic things that don't seem like his character should be able to do, he is even a better shot than Stormtroopers who are professionally trained soldiers. However they are able to save his character from being a true Mary Sue by having him go through a bunch of training and such. But then, he is a rather Overpowered character which again many people mistake for being a Mary Sue.
      I personally think Rey's character is a little overpowered but not a Mary Sue and that she will probably be revealed to be the kid of some powerful person and stuff to explain the overpoweredness. But it is an issue with all of Star Wars, the main character is ALWAYS overpowered. Anakin was probably the most overpowered as he could do pretty much everything.

      @joejoeson1528 Před 7 lety +1

      vidarDJ16starkill Kylo didn't hesitate to kill his own father in the most evil manner possible yet he was holding back on MaRey Sue because?
      Also even if his objective wasn't to kill MaRey Sue why didn't he just force faint her like he did before?
      Ok let's assume that Kylo DID hold back against MaRey Sue, but then how and why the heck did he lose to Finn? He should be furious with him after all his traitorous actions, yet either Luke's apprentice who slaughtered the rest of Luke's students wasn't strong enough to defeat an inexperienced stormtrooper or he was holding back which makes even less sense.

    I think what would be great in Rey's character arc going forward is that now that she's aware of her Force abilities, she'll start to slowly get more confident and sure of herself, but it will eventually morph into overconfidence and then into arrogance. That arrogance will lead to her desire for greater power, ultimately setting up her pull towards the Dark Side.

    • @memnarch129
      @memnarch129 Před 8 lety +10

      Yeah. The way they need to write this one is the opposite of before, The Original Trilogy I mean. Instead of Rey fighting hard and showing Ben the goodness of the light side she becomes so obsessed herself with power that she falls to the Dark Side and it shocks Ben into flipping sides. Do I think they will do this? Fuck no they will take the easy way out but it would be a HELL of a good story.

    • @spentlizard353
      @spentlizard353 Před 8 lety +2

      lovethepandainyou The loss of Han Solo would work in that scenario as well. And she isn't arrogant right now, but that's because all of her life she didn't know what power was because she had none. Now that she has a power far beyond her own understanding, I doubt that her personality will stay the same because now she knows what power feels like, and she won't want to give up what she's never had before. She'll want more and more until it consumes her.

      Since we already know that Rey has _already_ had to deal with acting out in anger, I feel like she might start falling towards the dark side, but I really _really_ don't want her to become a sith or dark side user. In a way, I like her character too much for that to be my wish. I think she's stronger than that myself, but the way she struggles is just too real, and tense, for them to ignore it. My personal hope is that, if she tends to lean towards the dark side, is that her love for Finn (and yes, this is assuming that their feelings go beyond 'just friends', but really, it's practically set up in the film. That long hug scene, for example, and the way Finn cradles Rey's head when she's hurt, it doesn't feel like and entirely platonic relationship. And that line "Got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?" feels like foreshadowing for her feelings for Finn. Even if it's only on Rey's side, I feel like there's a very strong connection between the two that goes far beyond the friend line. Anyways, back to my main point) will bring her back. Because obviously hate and anger doesn't bring balance to the Force, and apparently the Jedi Code (there's probably a new one now with Luke, but still) doesn't seem to work all that well either, but perhaps love could. It's entirely a light side emotion, aside from the passion, which is often a character of the darker traits. Perhaps that's what settles the Force. Idk, it's just an odd little theory/idea I've had sitting around in my head for a while. Please feel free to provide constructive criticism, cause I'm honestly interested in other's ideas.

      The score was awesome, we just need a little more Duel of the Fates.

      Episode IV is my least favorite in score (and movie itself), but of course, they were just getting started, and can't be blamed if they just got better than what was already good.

    Speaking as a lifelong, die-hard Star Wars fan, Force Awakens was a welcome change from the generally hit-or-miss feel of the Prequel Trilogy. Its parallels to New Hope are impossible to ignore, making it feel a bit like it was trying to pay homage more than be its own thing, but Abrams at least had his sights set in the right direction. Kylo Ren comes off as something of a "try-hard" villain in my eyes, but that may be because I've put a lot of hours into the MMO, Old Republic, where a LOT of Sith players all too often pattern their dialog choices with the "evil for the sake of evil" mindset without any real purpose or legitimate impact. Last Jedi gave Kylo a bit more depth, but in this film, he's barely more than an angsty kid trying to fill a void that isn't really there. Finn is a good character concept, even if the execution isn't done as well as it could've been and the conflict with Phasma over his defection from the First Order has yet to receive any satisfying payoff. Poe feels like he was meant to REPLACE Han Solo with his piloting skills, snarky attitude, and general disrespect for authority figures, which only makes Han's death sting that much more, and gives the New Trilogy a real Mortal Kombat X vibe for me, with a new, younger group coming in to replace the characters we know and love from older installments. Rey... Rey angers me more than she honestly should, but that's more my problem than the movie's. A lot of my issues with her come from moments that don't really feel earned combined with a preference for the Expanded Universe over the Cinematic and how each version chooses to do things. Actually, that sums up my problems with the New Trilogy pretty well: To me, everything either feels too detached from everything to come before it, or like it was trying too hard to take what people loved about the older films and simply amp up the intensity or scale. I don't know what it is about the spin-off films like Rogue One, or the Clone Wars and Rebels series, but the main aspect of the Star Wars Cinematic Universe just doesn't hold my love like it used to. I've even started losing my blind, nostalgic love of the older films because of it. Hypocrisy over the prequels when excitement over new Star Wars content after so many years turned into a bandwagon of hatred, Palpatine and Vader both lost a lot of their mystique until the Clone Wars series--the CG, Dave Filloni one, not the original miniseries--got made which actually brought the Chosen One prophecy to some real payoff and made Anakin's shift from Jedi to Sith more gradual, and even Empire is no longer the flawless masterpiece that I fell in love with as a kid in my eyes because I've seen what the Expanded Universe has to offer, not to mention one or two sci-fi series with far better and more consistent writing (Go watch babylon 5 and Firefly if you haven't already. You'll thank me later).
    TL;DR, The films are good, but the REAL magic of Star Wars can be found in the Expanded Universe. Books, games, comics, whatever. Most of it is a gold mine, so start digging.

    "Promise that it was all though out ahead of time and Im taking that promise to the bank." Yeah that check bounced. There was no plan at all.
