  • www.crmjewelers... - Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller D-Blue 116660 Luxury Watch - James Cameron Edition
    The Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller D-Blue, also known as the Rolex Deep Blue Sea, is a special edition of the Rolex Sea-Dweller luxury watch. With a reference of 116660, the Deepsea D-Blue is also called the Rolex James Cameron Edition, named after the director of the Deep-sea thriller, “The Abyss,” back in 1989 (he also known for directing a myriad of blockbusters like The Terminator [1984], Aliens [1986], Titanic [1997] and Avatar [2009]). The Deepsea D-Blue high end watch was introduced by Rolex in 2014 to commemorate Jame Cameron's first solo human dive to the deepest point in the oceans of planet Earth, the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean (10,994 meters deep or 36,070 feet).
    During Cameron's Deepsea Challenge, a special “supercharged” 51-mm version of the Sea-Dweller Rolex designed was strapped to the manipulator arm of the submersible. Designed to withstand 12,000 meters of depth, the special Rolex Deepsea was able to withstand a crushing water pressure of eight tons per square inch, 1000 times greater than the atmospheric pressure at sea level!
    Even though the the Deepsea D-Blue edition is a new watch, it shares most of the same specifications as the regular and less expensive Rolex Seadweller 16600 mens watch with the black dial, including the extreme waterproof rating of 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) thanks to Rolex patented safety valve.
    The main differences between the regular Deepsea and the D-Blue can be found on the dial itself.
    If you look at the dial of the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue, you will notice that it fades from blue to black to symbolize the transition of color experienced during a deep sea dive. At lower depths, the ocean is void of any color whatsoever. The regular Sea-Dweller simply comes with a black dial.
    The word “DEEPSEA” on the dial of the new Sea-Dweller also has the same color as the submersible vehicle used by James Cameron to complete his incredible dive.
    The Price of the Deepseas
    There's quite a jump in price when you go from the regular Sea-Dweller to the Deepsea D-Blue dial edition.
    While a standard Deepsea Sea Dweller sells for an average of around $7,500 to $8,000 pre-owned, a preowned James Cameron Rolex is going to cost you around $11,500. That's quite a jump in price for a gradient dial and a neon name!
    While the colors of the D-Blue do stand out way more than the standard Deepsea, some people might not want to spend the extra money on the special edition.
    Wearing a Deepsea Rolex
    Both versions of the Deepsea are 44 millimeters in diameter. Even though this is the same case size as that of the Yacht-Master II, the case design of the Sea-Dweller models much taller, so unless you have a relatively larger wrist, you might not like the way the Deepsea sits on your arm.
    As far as the Watch Game goes, if you don't mind the size, the James Cameron edition of the Sea-Dweller is definitely going to turn some heads in your direction!
    The Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Edition as an Investment
    I'm not yet convinced that the D-Blue version of the Sea-Dweller will continue to enjoy a premium in price over it's black-dial cousin. Only time will tell.
    Will the price gap on both models shrink over time, bringing the price of the new Sea-Dweller lower? It's possible. Nevertheless, it is also possible that the D-Blue continues to appreciate proportionately over time, similarly to the Rolex Batman and the regular GMT II. It'll be interesting to see what really happens.

    This was a review without really reviewing the watch. It's all about the image here. How well does the bezel work? The bracelet? Links? The clasp? The movement? Case? Crystal? Setting the hands/date. Maybe compare to other dive watches? Etc.

    My wrist is 6 3/4" and the watch sits perfect. Micro-adjustment clasp does the trick. However, I found that the best position on my wrist for this particular watch is slightly above the wrist bone, so it sits a little bit higher and even though it is the same circumference there is more meat around to have it feel more snug and secure. Just my 2 cents.

    Apart from the color differences, this watch is identical to the original Deepsea, which has always been a fantastic diver. The clasp system is ingenious, the bezel is easy to use in any conditions. What you need to understand is that the extra depth rating (beyond 4000 ft) is not a suggestion for use, but rather a side effect of the massive up-armoring that allows this watch to withstand the kind of beating that would take your hand off the wrist. Also realize that a gas escape valve does not increase the depth you can go do, it is simply a feature that allows the watch to be in a hyperbaric chamber or pressurized dive housing safely. It's just a spring-loaded waterproof check valve that lets breathing gasses out under higher internal pressure, while keeping water out under higher external pressure. Under pressure, the watch will equalize if the crown is unscrewed, and even if it isn't, helium and hydrogen will penetrate the seals over time. They put in a check valve as a precaution, but if neglected, it becomes another potential failure point.

      +Arthur Serino I fully understand the way they work, and why they were developed
      For the Comex divers. Rolex tends to over engineer things. Which end up giving us a Fantastic watch.

    I joined three waiting lists in the U.K. for one of these, told I should expect to wait 18-24 months......6 weeks later one shop called and said I was no longer number eight on the list, I was numero uno! So I go and buy the watch and they gave me a $350 watch winder plus a $300 Rolex wallet. Several weeks later both the other shops called and offered me watches! So much for waiting lists, bunch of tyre kickers putting their names down with no intention (or money) of buying the damn things!
    BTW, great watch, beautiful dial, looks very masculine and I’m sure it will hold its value way better than the plain black dialled versions!

    The dial is so beautiful ... the added color makes all the difference .... I have a standard Rolex Deepsea, and I totally agree, it is not the most comfortable watch, and I only wear it for a couple of hours at a time ... I think it could be better balanced with a more substantial bracelet ... I mean. if they were going to significantly beef up the case, why not the bracelet.. I will say, that when in the water, you don't notice this issue. BTW, I love your reviews Eric, you are very knowledgeable and passionate about fine watches..

    This watch is available and in stock with many gray market dealers, but asking way over Rolex MSRP. My AD, who I've purchased several watches from, considered a good customer, placed a PO with Rolex for a watch for me. It's been a several week wait so far, but I should get my new one in this next week at MSRP price. The wait is agonizing but once this hunk of 904L steel is on my wrist.....well...I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. The Blue Widow is beautiful.

    • @polarroller
      @polarroller Před 8 lety +3

      CRM, I was first on the list with my AD, it took an almost 8 week wait. I just un-boxed mine yesterday. First impressions; I absolutely don't see why many people think it's too big, too much weight. or top heavy. I found it absolutely perfect. I'm use to wearing the new Explorer II 42 mm, so the 44 mm wasn't that big of a change up in size. Secondly, the dial is amazing. Vids and photos don't do it justice. The dial is so dynamic with color changes depending on lighting, shade, etc. It's sometimes all black, then hit it with some light and that gradient blue just pops. It's a keeper! Thanks for your vids...I always enjoy them.

    For Rolex diver fans and who like big, heavy and bulky. I prefer the 300 m range - Rolex and Omega - that you can wear everyday, also with a suit. As for this type of watch if I had it, it would exclusively be for days at the beach, in the pool, in the ocean. Meaning about 15 days a year max. So definitely a special ocean-and-pool-only occasion watch, and definitely not the office watch or even weekend watch back in the city.

    Awesome watch, and well thought-out honest commentary in regards to this watch. I have been looking at this watch for a while, and tomorrow I have an appointment with a local jeweler which will be the first time I will see one in person. It has been nearly impossible to find this model watch in stock anywhere. If I am as impressed with it in person, as I am with the photos and videos I have seen on the internet tomorrow I will take the plunge and become a proud owner. I am taking everything you said into account as I do have a smaller wrist but prefer larger watches. I certainly don't need, nor does 99 percent of the population, a watch having the ability to travel over 12,000 feet in depth but man it's a cool looking watch with a very different face especially for Rolex. Thanks again, great review!

    The story is that Rolex had a stock of the original black edition watches that were not selling too well so they changed the dial. Then people wanted the new colour & they started selling. I have the original black dial Deepsea which as they didn't sell too many of originally may end up going up in value more than the DeepBlue. Remember the Paul Newman Daytona was a watch that Rolex couldn't sell when it was new! Wish I'd got a few of them when they were available ;-).

      It's going higher right now, but that won't last. Like all overhyped Rolex models eventually supply will meet demand & they'll start to lose money. Just as the ceramic Daytona will, I wouldn't want to be left holding a ceramic Daytona when they tank as some buyers paid way over list. Don't get stung paying over list, buy used and let someone else take the hit!

    my juweler (germany) told me that you can change the black dial of a "standart" deep sea into the "deep blue" one for 300 bucks ! you only have to send it to rolex and they will change it for 300 and thats it !!! Rolex will keep the black dial....they dont want you to have both ...... (sorry for my english)

    • @Wachoxxl
      @Wachoxxl Před 8 lety

      the juweler told me it works because both got the same ref. number..... but you can only keep one..black or the deep-blue one.... same with the gold gmt master 2....you can only interchange the green or the black dial
      ask for it...would be very interesting !

    • @heldergarcao2607
      @heldergarcao2607 Před 8 lety +1

      Rolex will simply refuse to do it. No chance.... Someone outside Rolex may do it easily (just open and change the dial) but not Rolex... Still, consider that if you do it, the watch is no longer original and it's value will be similar with the regular Deepsea (or even a bit less)

    • @karsonfenton2532
      @karsonfenton2532 Před 5 lety

      @@heldergarcao2607 lol have you ever tried contacting Rolex and actually ASKING to see if they do interchange and or up sell the Deep Blue Dials?! I doubt you own one, so I doubt you have ever tried contacting Rolex to ask. I'm just saying you shouldn't say, NO CHANCE unless you know for certain. Which you don't. Because Rolex actually does charge a additional $400 to change the black to Deep Blue. It makes sense because the Deep Blue edition is only $400 more to begin with.

      @@karsonfenton2532 I do own a deepsea DBlue.
      Before I bought it, I found a great deal for the black edition, but I wanted the special one... so I've asked to sereval authorized dealers (in Italy) if it was possible. The answer was always the same and it was cristal clear: NO CHANCE!!!
      I end up refusing that great deal and I waited for my DBlue to arrive (back then, in 2014, there was a waiting list to get one)

    I debated on this watch a long time, and finally bought it. Damn I love it. It is def not a watch to wear with a long sleeve shirt, but other than that, its sweet. The weight and size you don't realize once its on. I have black sub, hulk sub, day date president, air king, and this is the watch that everyone asks about when I wear, including those wearing the previous Rolex's I just mentioned. Stunner in person. Not an easy watch to find, retail or pre-owned. Great review dude. Honest and straight up.

    Funny, but I like that neon green print too. The Blue shading, just doesn't mean much to me. I can barely see it. I usually see about a $2000-$2500 premium, for nothing more than the dial? I don't see it. I can only see a $1000 premium "FOR ME" for the dial. This piece never impacted, nearly me as much as a "Hulk". That I LOVE!
    The topper to me is, I don't think the MSRP on this piece is anywhere near the premium they are selling for. I could be wrong on that. I don't think the actual MSRP difference is near $1000? I could be wrong.

    Harry Winston are a couple cuts above Jacob and Co, since they're both diamond jewelry and watch design firms. Harry Winston piss all over Tiffany and Co. Doesn't HW use AP and Jaeger and Vacheron movements and some other independent Swiss movements? Their Opus 12 and Ocean tourbillon jumping hour are sexy.
