  • Are you wondering how to install a security bolt, which is the next thing on your DIY list? Installing a security bolt is neither difficult nor time consuming and even if you don’t have much experience it shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours.
Before you install the security bolt, you need two cut two holes for the mechanism. It may seem like the most daunting task but it’s relatively easy as long as you have the proper tools and a bit of patience. The most effective way is to drill a few holes in the edge of the door first and then use the chisel to create enough space to house the lock.
So if you’re tired of procrastinating the job, watch my step-by-step tutorial to see how to successfully prepare the door and fit the security bolt.

Use a Stanley knive to scribe round the lock plate first before you chisel the depth of the plate.. you will get a much cleaner finish..

@@k-nemo Also screw the face plate in position so your fingers will NOT be more inclined to come into contact with the blade... 😉

One of the best, easy-to-follow videos I've ever seen (on anything).
The procedure of installing a security bolt was explained thoroughly and very informatively with tips on how the locking mechanism works.
Now I know how everything fits together, I am confident of tackling a security bolt stubbornly stuck in the (door) open position.
I might well need to buy an actual new security bolt, but at least now I know what I need to do to replace the old one.
    Thank you for posting!

To be brutally honest ... I really don't like to be negative, thats seriously a rough job! Mind you I've seen qualified carpenters work just as bad, mainly because they couldn't give a monkeys. You certainly don't need to countersink for the back of the plate's", to accommodate the the plates siting flush, a tap with the hammer or even the screws would tighten them into the timber and at the same time restrict movement. Fair play to you for giving it ago....

Yeah, and the first chisel hits should be near the finish line NOT on it, no wonder he got break out.

Ive bought a few of these rack bolts for my internal doors. Video makes it look fairly straightforward but I have some questions.....
Are the keys different for every lock or universal? Doesnt seem much point as a security measure if anyone can buy one anywhere and it'll fit the lock.
I noticed you placed the baseplate nearer to the front of the door edge not dead centre, what's the reason for that? The key length maybe?
How do I make sure Im drilling the hole straight to house the bolt?
    Thanks

The key for this type of lock is universal. In reality the key is nothing more than a removable thumb-turn. It's just a replacement for a more traditional surface mounted bolt. So you'd be locking it from the inside anyway.
If you want a lock with a unique key (that you can lock/unlock from both sides of the door) then I would suggest a mortice lock.
You don't need to be too precise when drilling the hole so just go by eye.
