  • This is a collection of races that Michael Johnson competed in during the 1996 outdoor season. The first two races are the US Olympic Trial finals for the 200m and 400m. Johnson narrowly missing the world record in the quarter and breaks Mennea's world record in the 200m that stood for 17 years. The next races were great foreshadowing for the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in Atlanta. In these races, Johnson, Ato Boldon, Roger Black, and the forever young Frankie Fredericks put down some incredible times. Helping to serve as some motivation I am sure, Fredericks actually bested the new record holder in the 200m in a photofinish! Hopefully you enjoy the historic footage!

Johnson was not a significantly better 200M runner than fellow 29YO, FF. However, MJ was the only 29YO that recorded a time of 19.32 at the back end of his career. Bolt proved himself to be phenomenal as a youngster. He broke 20 seconds as a teenager. MJ broke 20 seconds in his twenties. That is not the resume of an individual that would likely progress to 19.32 as a 29YO. In 2007 the year before the Olympics, Bolt as an 18YO, recoded a time of 19.75. In 1995 the year before the Olympics MJ’s best tine was 19.79 as 28YO. Which of the two would be expected to improve significantly on an ultra-fast track? Clearly not the 29YO! In the Olympics year of 2008, Bolt recorded time of 19.76, 19.67, 19.63 and 19.30. He also ran 9.76, 9.72 for 100M before he ran 9.69 pulling a bus and 19.30 running against the clock. He gave every indication from his 100M times that if he had speed endurance he could record 19.30 and better for 200M. Johnson could not break 10 seconds for 100M for his career and never gave any indication he could ever run 19.32 ever and certainly not as a 2YO.. Bolt’s progress is more consistent with that of a phenom. After the 2008 Olympics, Bolt recorded times of 19.56, 19.57, 19.58, 19.59, 19.66, 19.68, 19.63, 19.40, 19.32 and 19.19. MJ's best time after the 1996 Olympics was 19.71 at altitude. His 19.32 was partly aided and abetted the ultra-fast track but primarily by drugs. No 29YO sprinter just pops up and run those fast times. Name me one 29YO who has run that fast for the distance? Only Bolt seems capable of those times at an advance age for sprinter and he is the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen MJ was not. His sudden improvement at an advance age for a sprinter was similar to that of Flo Jo. Do not glorify MJ he is another American sprinter that has fooled the world and his secret like that of Flo Jo is well kept.

@@kerrypal3387 I think MJ agrees with you. He seemed the most surprised individual when Bolt dropped that 1930 lol.

I have never seen the rubber match between Michael & Fredericks which took place at Berlin a month after the Olympics. Fredericks handed Michael his second defeat of the season at 200m to take home the Golden 4 title at 200m for the season. Fredericks only loss at 200m that season was regrettably at the Olympics.

Frankie Frederick's was such an underrated sprinter. IMO he was the only guy on the planet that could even come close to challenging Johnson in the 200m, and he was no slouch in the 100m either.
But yeah, that start was RIDICULOUS.

Frankie proved that it wasn't a fluke by defeating him again later in Berlin a month after the Olympics.

I've only ever seen Michael Johnson lose two 400m races. Both to UK guys in Mark Richardson and the great Roger Black. No injuries for excuses or anything.
Shame there's no videos of those races on youtube as they are genuine rarities.

that video of him breaking the 200m record isn't the right video cause the wind ended up being over the limit so they didn't count it. the real video you want is when he ran 19.66.

Johnson's 400m in Lausanne (1:57-2:44) 43.66 was run with negative 200m split-times of 21.9/21.7, see the move he makes 200-300m, ridiculous

Frankie beat him twice in 1996 at Oslo & Berlin to win the golden 4 title for 200m having won all 4 meets. Oslo is on youtube but I have never seen Berlin.
