  • Ben Johnson vs Carl Lewis at the Seoul Olympics. Great start by Johnson as he completely destroys the field for the first 80m enroute to a new world record. The gold and record were later stripped as he controversially tested positive for steroids. Both Johnson and his coach Charlie Francis denied his use of the steroids in question. Francis went on to chronicle Johnson's steroid use and cycles, but vehemenently denied ever using Stanozolol. As ironic as it sounds, pleading innocent to using the drug that you tested positive for, but declaring the use of many other banned substances was the defense used. Either way, both athletes had many allegations thrown at them through the years and it made for an interesting race as both Linford Christie and Calvin Smith also broke 10 seconds.

    this was the greatest 100 meter race for 20 years (until beijing 2008) it made me a huge fan of track and field. the top 3 men all tested positive in their careers so ben won this race fair and square.

    @sciencestudent342 yep,he was injured the whole '88 season and still ran 9.79,a healthy BJ runs around 9.68 in seoul

    @fightjunge24 Bolt's always had the pure speed - 20.58 at 15, 20.13 at 16, 19.93 at 17, 19.88 at 18.., lots of that was just talent, he didn't actually start training seriously till 08 and thats when he started making huge improvements.

    yeah it would have but still way out of just over 10 sec which at that time for a major final would have been the target range for finalists

    @TheTruthMerchant, Johnson in Rome was 0.86 + 0.87 for final 20m and in Seoul had already slowed to 0.87 for 80-90m, he wasn't going to speed up for an 0.86. In reality, his intensity eases after 90m and his hand goes up at 97m. 9.76 for Johnson here at best......these tracks are not worth a TENTH faster, that is 1.2m for these guys at their peak speeds, huge distance at that level. You make out like the Seoul track was made out of treacle

    @fightjunge24 Gay was also very consistent last season, in fact he went sub 9.8 more times than Bolt did with a SB of 9.77 vs Bolt who had an SB of 9.79 (before the WC's). And if you notice, Bolt never even went full out until the WC's, it's not like he ran consistent sub 9.6 performances (9.8 is a jog for Bolt when he's as healthy as he was last season), so his consistency is actually pretty realistic.

    whatever people say about ben johnson, they still remember 9.79 .Noone remembers all the ''clean'' athletes times because noone got close for 20 years.

    There is a book coming out called something like the Dirtiest Race Ever, I suggest you read it. All these men racing here bar two have been associated/tested positive for PED's throughout their career. In fact Carl Lewis tested dirty in the Olympic Trials if I remember rightly according to the book.

    @TheTruthMerchant he definately would be a 9.6 runner on todays fast mondotracks,the same goes for a healthy prime mo greene

  • @nevmiles
    @nevmiles Před 11 lety

    well, he did pull up about 3/4 of the way through the race . . . his time would have been a few seconds faster had he sprinted right to the end

    @fightjunge24 Some very strange comments.
    Johnson's time over the last 20 metres in Seoul was 1.77 seconds, in Rome the year before for a slower overall time it was 1.73 seconds. Yet you claim he didn't even slow by 0.01 second???
    Le Maitre is 1/4 Algerian so that helps him run fast? Because Algeria is well known for their sprinters aren't they. National record: 10.34!

    @Xavier800416 Hardly think so. Johnson would run 9.4 on one of todays mondotracks.

  • @MrBusunglueck
    @MrBusunglueck Před 13 lety

    @senjahcore well even if bolt is faster then its still illegal so the fastest clean cometitor deserves the gold !

  • @phastman
    @phastman Před 13 lety

    @fightjunge24 Well thats what he improved most on actually, his strength, which he lacked lots of in 07. Obviously he's gonna gain muscle.. once again it's possible, but I want proof.

  • @bafa7353
    @bafa7353 Před 12 lety

    Lewis took an herbal stimulant and the level was not over the allowable ppm under today's standards. Johnson took Winstrol at mega doses. Not even in the same league!

  • @chosenone1242

    You know that Lewis were on drugs too, right?

  • @MrBusunglueck
    @MrBusunglueck Před 13 lety

    and from that november on actually to march 08 bolt gained 20 pounds of muscle wich is VERY unlikely. i know there is no proof but these performances are very questionable. and on top of all that yohan blake already got caught for druguse once. sure it was just a stimulant but still.... ( bolt and blake the same coach)

  • @phastman
    @phastman Před 13 lety

    @fightjunge24 Who says no one can run that fast? Where do you come up with your facts? If ur gonna accuse you should find proof first..

  • @phastman
    @phastman Před 13 lety

    @TheTruthMerchant 9.4? Bullshit!, not even close! I doubt Ben would go sub 9.7 even on today's mondotracks.

  • @TheTruthMerchant
    @TheTruthMerchant Před 13 lety

    @fightjunge24 Johnson would have maybe made 9.75 today?? He would have run 9.75 in the Seoul race had he not slowed down to celebrate at the end!
    Today's tracks make only 0.05 seconds difference? Oh please come on, A weedy spotty white French teenager can run sub 10 seconds on todays surfaces!

  • @phastman
    @phastman Před 13 lety

    @fightjunge24 Dwain Chambers was dirty (clean now) and there are clean sprinters that have run much faster than Chambers. How bout guys like Bob Hayes? He's still arguably one of the fastest men in history (possibly a sub 9.7 sprinter on todays mondotracks), was he dirty too? According to your logic, anyone that's gone faster than 9.79 is dirty, it's possible, but still no proof.

    @phastman Před 13 lety

    @fightjunge24 Some people are simply more talented than others, look back at Bolt's history as a youth and junior. If Bolt's dirty he's more and likely been dirty since he was 15.. did I say it was impossible? No. Do you still fail to provide proof that Bolt, Powell, and Gay are dirty? Yes.

    fair dues to ben johnson he beat them all.
    they are all cheats anyway so ben should have got the gold anyway and he was running times in 88 that would be considered class now 23 years later.

    @pharry4life christie tested positive late in his career and there is nothing that tells me he wasnt always a drug cheat and lewis is the biggest fraud and cheater in olympic history! like i said they were all on drugs, so ben won fairly!

    smh, just another hater accusing everyone of being dirty with no proof. and a sub 9.7 would have been possible today under the right conditions but he was no faster than Gay or Powell
