We moved to Hawaii at the start of my sophmore year in high school. (Castle HS in Kaneohe) I grew up in rural Idaho eating potatoes, corn, green beans, elk, etc. We went out to eat at achinese restaurant and the variety of new flavors blew my mind. I thought an angel had come to earth and cooked us dinner. Sweet and sour was fabulous.

Aloha, I grew up on the Leeward side of Oahu & in San Diego. I raised all of my children on the mainland. I cook lots of Hawai'ian foods for my keiki. I even made easy cookbooks for them to have when they moved out so that they will have the recipes to pass on to my Mo'opunas. It was great watching you try these Hawai'ian treats with your dad.
    Lots of Aloha, Auntie Ka'imi

You guys are the sweetest kids; each one of you an individual but lovely souls that inspire. You should be very proud as you as the oldest make decisions every day that encourage and inspire your younger siblings; kids who aren't showered with love and respect from their older siblings will never shine the way your "littles do. Super job, Sis!

Macadamias were first grown commercially in Hawaii but it's a native of south-east Queensland in Australia, where I live and where the climate is similar. Also, the Chinese population of Papua New Guinea, just to Australia's north, had what we called 'salty plums', which were dried and heavily salted plums. I loved them! Also, those wet dried plums look like what we call 'prunes' in Australia. We can also buy bottled prune juice here. It's great for what ails ya! 😉.

In the west of Ireland Nori is called Sleabhcán. It grows in thin strips on the rocks and harvested at low tide. It looks like the old cassette tape. We stew it fresh or dry it, and store in air tight containers. We use it as a condiment and add to fish dishes and to soups. Flakes are fantastic in carrot cakes.

i still love mango i had a second fridge out in my garage where i use to harvest my mango trees and throw the fruit in the freezer and eat them like ice cream. i still love all the juices. was on oahu hawaii and got to visit kahoolawe which was a bombing range and gunnery range when i was there. i actually drove my little datsun around the entire island of oahu including the rather rocky road going from yokohama beach to the north shore side. this was back in the late 60 s to 1973. i actually was on the uss enterprise for a tour in 73

Great memories as I too have had experienced Hawaiian assorted food living in Waimanalo, Oahu as a child when dad was stationed in the millitary. If i recall the misubi also had "ume" ( picked plum), daikon (pickled radish), along with fried spam. I recall my friends inviting me to a "pot luck" & feasting on chicken long rice, Lau Lau, lomi salmon, pipikaula ( beef jerkey), smoked marlin sword fish marinated in teriyaki sauce, poki in assortment ( my favorite were "ahi" & "tako") .....and among other recipes at the moment I am trying to remember as I reflect 🤔. Whew thank you for reminiscing my memories!!!! Great video 😃👍!!

one thing that was different when i was renting a house in waipahu was there was no heating or cooling. the windows were mostly solid glass with louvres under the windows to open or close to adjust the temperature. used to call me the crazy howley cause i acted more hawaiian than i did white. i kind of melted into my environment. had a great time and being a diver in the service i fit right in to the many water sports. but be careful playing rugby against the samoans was a very physical game but i loved it. a scrum is not a scrum until you play the samoans. its like a hidden fist fight lol

We make spam, eggs and potato burritos and they are a huge hit in Indian Country (Native American)! I went to college with a couple of gals from Hawaii who also loved spam. They would stock up on spam and ship them home as spam was cheaper in the non-Hawaii states.

This is so good!! You did great trying different foods. Really sour one that would be me, My face puckers up like that. And then my jaws actually hurt when I eat something really sour like that. Oh my, I was laughing with you all. Your dad was in his comfort foods. When you were eating a couple of them, it reminded me of when my children would try ludifisk. It is a fish We have a christmas time. My grandma would make a big swedish norwegian meal. My kids will eat the swedish sausage But my daughter is the only one that will eat a little bit of the lutifisk, We eat it with a white sauce over it that we make. I have a friend going to have her watch this . She has 7 kids , they home school.as well many years. She got to go back to Hawaii for the first time two years ago to meet relatives. Her mom is Hawaiian. I'm gonna tell my friend to do something like this with her Kids in their home how fun. I live in minnesota and we actually have a spam museum here on north. I have never been there , And I have only eaten Spam a couple times.

We used to have spam fritters in my boarding school days in the UK, which is essentially, spam dipped in batter and fried. We also had a spam loaf, which is the spam grated, then mixed with egg and whatever spices or herbs you fancy and then baked in a small baking form. All cheap and cheerful food, but we loved it, I still make the loaf now and again these days. I never knew that they ate spam also in Hawaii, I like the way you guys made it, I will have to give that a go, albeit, I need some convincing with the seaweed aspect :-)

My grandmother taught in the Hilo Boys Boarding School as a young girl and she passed on a deep appreciation for the old queen Lilioukalani who had the teachers to tea one day at Washington Place. I have a can of spam in the kitchen, now i know what it will become.
