    I am building a Gutbuster whalehunters army. The idea is that they hunt the gaint aetherwhales, which where mentioned in the kharadron overlords battletome. Aetherwhales are like gaint flying whales and therefore they can go where ever they want. The ogors will follow these whales around in order the hunt the creatures. Meanwhile the Ogors will fight anything that stands between them and their prey. So there is always a reason for them to fight different armies. I will also ally in some beastclaw raiders, mostly thundertusks and stonehorns, which the Ogors use as labour animals to carry the chunks of aetherwhale onces one has been taken down and killed.

      Games Workshop would be proud ;) Seriously though, this is exactly the kind of cool stuff I was talking about when I mentioned story inspired armies. Just like a Lodge in my fyreslayers battletome only gets 3-4 sentences of lore to build on, you took a throwaway reference to Aetherwhales and made a whole thing out of it :) Great job :) Things like harpoons and such would go a long way to unifying that theme among the units.

    I did something a little different and based my army off of an exterior source-namely, a series of strategy video games called Fire Emblem.
    My plan is to have a custom Stormhost called the Radiant Dawn with different units and Chambers colored and based off of different characters from the game. So, let’s say there’s a unit of Judicators. The Judicator-Prime could have a unique plume color or shoulder pad based off of an archer from the games. Or more widely, an Extremis Chamber has similar coloring to one of the main lords from the games, with the Lord-Celestant being that lord. Regardless, their main silver armor will be what mostly connects them, or even secondary colors like navy blue or red (a lot of main characters have red and blue in those games...)
    Right now my Sacrosanct Chamber (which I’m going to call the warband “The Branded”) is going to done following the colors of Micaiah, who was a light mage and main character of one of the titles. In the world of Age of Sigmar, I’m styling the whole Stormhost as if they were from Ghyran, but the heroes will be from all over-like my Lord-Arcanum from Hysh and Knight-Incantor from Aqshy. A theme across a lot of the Fire Emblem games is a ragtag army combining people from all over the world uniting to fight evil, so the narrative glue binding the Stormhost will be that they all rebelled against Chaos in that sort of manner. Hopefully, this structure gives me some freedom to change up color schemes some time. My worst fear was being restricted to just the one scheme for the whole army.
    I’ve got a Death Guard army for 40K that was originally just based on color-traditional Death Guard Green with bone trim, Zandri Dust horns, and mauve fabric. I flavored it a little so that they decorate their armor with the shattered bones of their victims and grind the dirt to desert dust with every step

    My Stormcasts are Azyrite Arbiters, but there's only one sentence of fluff on them (that they hate chaos). I chose them because I wanted a white/green Biel Tan type color scheme. I also collect Nurgle so I've been trying to build a theme around waging a war against Nurgle.

    @MrPaul-bn9cl Před 6 lety +6

    One of the Hardest things I've done is coming up with a backstory for my Death... Like, "We're all slaves of Nagash, we all do what we are told"...
    In this case, though, I've decided to make it character driven, since the skeletons and chainrasps lack basic personalities.
    The necromancer who obeys Nagash, but searches for enough power to challenge him. The Wight Lord who is his "buddy cop", who retains his sense of honor and violence and who may-or-may not follow the necromancer if he challenges Nagash, etc.
    But really, it's been annoyingly tough. When your faction is entirely wrapped around a single all-powerful entity, ala Nagash... Oy!

    • @2Tough
      @2Tough  Před 6 lety +5

      That is a totally legit issue and one that I'll address in the next video in this series. In horse armies, characters and heroes have double the importance to drive a narrative. The next video will focus on building a custom backstory for your army :) Who, what when where and how ;)

    • @rowandecker8473
      @rowandecker8473 Před 6 lety +3

      Creating Death characters is a blast for me in part *because* "we're all slaves to Nagash." Actually when you dig into the LON Battletome, yes they all serve, but a number of the big players actually HATE Nagash. Vhordrai loathes the guy and tried to kill him, Mannfred thinks that he should be the god of Death instead, the Vampire Lords--while technically serving Neferata--are constantly murdering each other in the shadows as they try to work their way up the hierarchical ladder(and would off Neferata too if she ever let any of them grow powerful enough). And the Wight Kings.... they're all undead Tyrants and Conquerors from bygone eras, so the sky's the limit in terms of their characteristics, loyalties, and motivations etc. IDK... maybe its just me, but sometimes working with a constraint like "we're all slaves to the master" actually opens up some very compelling narrative options that I couldn't find with other armies.

    • @MrPaul-bn9cl
      @MrPaul-bn9cl Před 6 lety +1

      Rowan Decker Cool!
      That is how I went too. My leaders all have different motivations and personalities.
      Nothing, besides back-stabbing or relic-collecting for Power to challenge Nagash, really popped out at me for motivation though.
      It's tough to incorporate a sense of dynamism into your army, when only select characters are dynamic...
      I've come up with stuff that pleases Me though. But man.
      It's like assigning character to Tyranids from 40k... O.o

    • @rowandecker8473
      @rowandecker8473 Před 6 lety +1

      Ha! Is that even possible? To write characters for Tyranids?
      Something else I wanted to mention but forgot(because you brought up Necromancers as a focal point) is that there's some real potential there for a tragic angle that, again, I'm not sure if I could make work with other armies. For example: Hyish is all about progress, truth, illumination, wisdom etc. But what happens when a Hyishan Wizard starts nearing the end of their life or life's work but feel like they haven't learned enough, haven't revealed a hidden, perceived truth that's just beyond their reach, or otherwise fulfilled their life's purpose? And what happens when the *one area of magical study* that's always been forbidden to them is the one thing offering demonstrable solutions to the problem of our fragile, ailing bodies? They say that many(perhaps even most) of the Necromancers end up in Shyish, but that *isn't* where they began.
      One of the interesting problems for creating a compelling Death character is that they're so damn old you have to go back centuries to get to the core of what drives them. But I think Necromancers in particular are just fascinating, partly for this reason.
      Do you by any chance read comic books, Mr. Paul? There's one I'd highly recommend by Jeff Lemire called 'Animal Man.' Its about a Superhero dad who is..well… trying to be a superhero and a dad. But one day he comes home to find that his little girl has resurrected her dead hamster with awakening superpowers of her own. She didn't mean to do it. She doesn't even know how it happened. But when the whole neighbourhood's dead dogs and cats then come to visit, it becomes a real problem for the family. She's ostensibly a 6 year old accidental Necromancer in a contemporary, 21st century setting. It's a fantastic little story with some great art. It sounds like you've already got some awesome ideas for your heroes but I'd nonetheless highly recommend Animal Man for an excellent look at a very sympathetic and lovable character who is doing some unspeakably horrible things. But it makes me consider that many of our Death heroes will have started their journeys with noble intentions.

    • @MrPaul-bn9cl
      @MrPaul-bn9cl Před 6 lety +1

      Rowan Decker I actually Like the "accidental necromancer" thing!
      Someone so attuned to Death magic that fate just compels them towards necromancy...
      And I'll make sure to look for that comic book!

    This is just the kind of thing I was looking for. I just got into AoS, mostly thanks to your lore videos and split the Soul Wars box with a friend. I took the Stormcast half and decided to go with the Celestial Vindicators colors just based on looks, but I want to get their basic theme right. If have I mostly the Sacrosanct units how would get that theme of the Vindicators being headstrong and rushing into melee?

    • @2Tough
      @2Tough  Před 6 lety +1

      Awesome idea! Celestial Vindicators are a great Stormhost, all their special abilites favor charging into combat and being amazing... which is the exact same thing that Sequitors and Evocators do ;) I'd focus on them with magic support. The unique Stormhost ability will help them attack on the charge and you wont be dissapointed lol

    My theme is a city based in Shyish, mostly ruled by Wanderers who were enraged by Alarielle's expectation that they should die for her. They've turned their backs on the Realm of life completely and have instead embraced death magic. As they fled the war they arrived near the edge of Shyish and each took a grain of grave sand with them which they used to create a 'Heart of the City' which they use to enhance their necromantic abilities and bind souls to the dead. The humans who form the majority of the population also form the city watch. They rely more on their armour, lacking the agility of the Aelves but due to the concentration of death magic, the armour corrodes each night, so the dispossessed have to work tirelessly in the forges in order to replace it every day. I'm trying to add lots of conversions in the army and have really been enjoying the process and creating lore for them.
    "She expected us to die. She wanted us to die for her... creations. We who defended the realm of life for generations, guarded her forest and the sanctity of her groves. But we are no longer bound to her. We have followed a different path. Where once we relied on life, now we have conquered death. And we will never bow again. Not to her, not to Sigmar, not even to the great necromancer himself. Now, finally, we are free.

    Heres the theme for my Khorne army:
    Its led by a Mighty Lord of Khorne thats not really a Khorne Worshipper.
    During the age of chaos he was a general for a random empire, he was such an amazing general, due to his love of strategy and war and his complete self imposed obsessed life of military matters, he led his empire to many many victories against the invading legions of chaos and even slew many a warrior in combat himself. Nothing can stand up to the reign of chaos however and slowly his empire was wittled away.
    On the last battlefield khorne offered the general to continue his obssession in warfare in exchange for leading a khorne bloodbound warband. Being the last man left alive of his previous empire, rather than choose to die with honor he chose to be able to continue living out matters of strategy.

    I know I’m late to the game here... commentating 7 months after you released the video. But the narrative I’m putting together for my Fyreslayers is that a Lodge was nearly destroyed. The new Runefather is seeking out Fyreslayers from across the mortal realms to join him.
    He sends messengers out through the realm gates and eventually small units from every realm that had been separated from their lodges for whatever reason have begun to arrive.
    About 1/2 my army will be Fyreslayers from Aqshy, but from different lodges, the other 1/2 will come from each of the other realms with the looks of the realms. I’m currently working on a unit from the Realm of Shadows. Pale skin, blacks, shades of grays, and silver with only the Ur Gold runes being gold.

      Welcome to the hobby! There are actually a few reason why a Deepkin force would'nt steal the soul of an ally... For starters, there's just something about the souls of humans that works better, their battletome states they tried taking souls from orruks and sylvaneth and beasts, but it just never worked. Also they are incredibly smart, they'd much rather use an ally to their advantage then steal everyone's souls and have no friends :)

    Hey love the video but have a question relating to your gaming mat. When will it be restocked as I'd love to purchase one of that quality.

      Hey Leon! My business partner and I are likely not going to re-stock them. They frankly never sold well :/ I'll keep the channel posted if things change

    How do you feel about theming from fantasy? Now that Vlad has an official warscroll, im creating a Sylvania themed deathrattle army with him, krell and isabella

      I dont have a problem with it, though i much like AOS more lore. If you have an opponent that also prefers WFB lore then you can make some seriously cool armies :)

      Hey Bill! Well my business partner and I are working on that, Frankly, they never sold well so I likely wont order any more :/

    My armies theme:
    In the realm Ghur, is the Kingdom of Mortalia it is ruled by Landgrave Bernardyn van Winther and his family it is located close to the Gate of Neverwas a realm gate to the kingdom of Ravania, ruled by Markgrave Kelton Kul, The Barrowlord.
    Both of whom are members of the Legion Of the night and send their armies in the name of their Emperor Mannfred von Carstein

      I love it :) it's unique and fits right into an existing army theme/setup (Legion of Night)

      Why Ghur? Seems more like realm of Death

    11:50, man the Seraphon book feels kinda half arsed compared to all the others. All it did was show some pictures of different models from different subfactions. Not even telling you what paints where used in the creation.

    Could you do Anvilgard and do stuff like you did with sisters 👯‍♀️

    Well I kinda themed my army a different way. I have dark elves and did a person tattoo on each clock currently on 153 really pointless and long but haven't seen anyone else do it.

    • @2Tough
      @2Tough  Před 6 lety

      That's awesome! Similar to the idea of heraldry, something painted on each model that binds them into a cohesive army, great job!

    The lore theme thing is very annoying for me personally.
    Slightly off topic but look at White Scars or Blood Angels, they are themed around bikes or melee combat... but at the same time, your regular chapter still has normal troops and other things. So if I were to build a White Scars army, would I go all bikes, which is themed, or troops which would also be themed...

    • @2Tough
      @2Tough  Před 6 lety

      Absolutely and I completely understand. When it comes to lore-based themes i suggest a particular story or something like that just to give some context. You are absolutely correct with your White-Scars and Blood Angels analogy, and it's something I touched on with Hammers of Sigmar. If you base your army on the lore of an entire Stormhost (or space marine chapter) you can build on the totality of that lore (i.e. white scars have all kinds of units, not just bikes.) It's not meant to trap you into using a certain unit exclusively.

      I play Raven Guard in 40k, and people still go 'Hurr hurr Silencers on your power armor'-stealth Space Marine-snideness...
      But they aren't Just stealth noobs who hop around on jumppacks everywhere. They aren't entirely idiotic...
      They still have Vindicators and other siege assets in their armory. They still use Devastators and heavier tanks like Predators for support. They still place their heroes' bodies into Dreadnaught tombs so they can enter combat once more.
