I understand where you are coming from, but a " bump in the road" implies that something is an anomaly. The way I see the team playing is that we are consistently and repeatedly open at the back and that is not an anomaly.

People never used to have these one week melt downs when I started supporting spurs in the 70’s. Now the over reaction to one result is incredible. It was a horrible performance, but it would be even worse if they didn’t learn from it. It doesn’t matter about ENIC or our 20 yr history of winning almost nothing, because none of it has anything to do with Ange. This is a new chapter that will take its own twists and turns - Ange will take responsibility for those, as fans we only have two options, support him through them or not. And if Jose and Conte showed us anything, it’s that the Ange’s of this world are few and far between and to not back and support him would be a crime !!!

100% we are going to lose like this from time to time with the style of play and the newer players (like Dragusin) get used to playing with the others. As long as we learn and progress from it.

Yeah the Tottenham fan base is so pathetic some times. Some fans were expecting a bottom half finish and then even some relegation, but now they’re complaining that we haven’t sown up the league title yet. It’s pathetic. Calling for the managers head with us in 5th, with a new, very different manager to the past 3 and then the loss of our all time greatest striker is utter insanity. Who would we bring in? How quick does he need to produce 100% win rate????????

If you want to buy into all the Ange worship hype being pumped out by the media that is fine. But don’t criticise other people who know a thing or two about football and can see that Ange is a dreadful manager and is taking Spurs backwards. His style of play has been found out by other clubs (Fulham case in point) and is not going to get Spurs anywhere. Spurs are better off finding a new manager and moving on.

    • @JPE762
      @JPE762 Před 2 měsíci

@@jeffrey6171 oh let me fall at your
feet sir Jeffrey, the all knowing master of football.
Give me a break ya sad sack. You have got to be kidding me if you expected spurs to be in a better position on the table at this point this year than they are. Kane gone, huge change of style, new manager, and massive need for a rebuild and restart. Ange may not be the greatest manager but your answer is sack him and move on? Hire who champ? Should we get conte back? What in your all knowingness should we do? You just want to continue the revolving door of managers and allow them all to have no time to achieve progress and then cry that there’s no progress? Is that your answer. Man supporters like you are the problem with the Tottenham fan base.
Get behind the team and manager and show some, well “support” and at least acknowledge that we’re in a better position in both the table and style of play than anyone expected this season. The team is young and needs time to grown into the league and style and to find their consistency. At least give them a chance. 2/3rds of a season at the start of the rebuild is not a chance.
Where did you honestly think spurs would be at this point of the season, at the start of the season?

For the very first time I have to disagree with you Alastair . Ange was out classed tactically and he didn’t respond tactically and the substitutes were way too late.
The players carried out his instructions to the letter but tactically they were at a disadvantage.
Many of the players under performed due the tactics but also were hiding refusing to get into 50 / 50 challenges. One or two took responsibility but the rest should hold their heads in shame.its not the defeat its the manner.

  • @joelisnthere2064

I think this game we saw why Dragusin hasnt started, he's not used to the offside trapping that requires only enough space between you and the attacker to cover if needed, but not enough to let them get clean away. Mickys speed and Cuti's reading have him covered, even Davies Porro and Royal have shown they get it while Dier was too lazy to do it. With time can see him really stepping up, his game against villa showed it, alot of great qualities regardless.
Agree with lost players. A few bumping into each other, running into the same open spaces, madders might as well have been a cb with how far back he was dropping at times, no doubt to help relieve pressure but it also stole from the pressure we usually exert.
What was really apparent as a long time Ange supporter is how much unforced unnecessary pressure the players put on themselves, same thing that loses them games and in contrast its also what makes them look resilient when they win. The ability to regain control of the game/momentum but this time they opted for high intensity attacking, gotta score next mentality which becomes easy to read when you know its coming. Beautiful when it works but Fulham was a great example of when it doesn't. The more refined Ange teams have an air of dominance and control to them which I don't expect from such a young team, yet, but am happy to see signs of it in other games like Villa.
Anyone questioning Ange simply has to look at the reaction of every player when they do things right or wrong. They ALL at some point look to Ange like the dad they want to impress and like the great guy he is, he NEVER throws them under the bus instead encouraging them to throw away the mistakes and keep moving forward. Something the toxic vocal social media "fan's" will hopefully learn. If anything they inspired me as well as good journalism from the likes of yourself, to start writing some of my thoughts, hopefully to swing opinions another way. Its a haters job to hate, let them hate, we just go on doing the best we can, because that's our only job that matters.
Despise the new players, manager, set piece coach etc. Its a rebuild season, anything lower than last year is a fail, so far this season is punching well above weight and with 10 games to go, anythings possible. Bring on the next challenge. COYS

Thank goodness for the voice of reason.
These supporters that are so fickle at times. Our manager has never lied to us. He told us there will be bad days and this was one.
Take nothing away from Fulham they were excellent but we facilitated that. To many players collectively poor all over the field.
Our midfield was being run thru and none of them covered themselves in glory. They will know that and learn I’m sure.
The same can be said of our front three all non existent. But there will be bad days on this journey we all knew that the progression has been great.
I’ll take the bad rather than return to the
to the negative football of the three seasons prior.
I won’t give up on this manager I’m confident he will take us forward and eventually challenge on all fronts.

I do like big Ange but he has to have a plan B. Try different things during games as well like switching wingers for example. Let’s be honest we’ve not seen Ange ball since after 11 games of the season. I didn’t get exited after the Villa game as I thought we were slow and ponderous in that game tbh until we were 2-0 up. The result papered over the cracks. Hoping we hammer Luton as a backlash after this. Worried about the huge games we have coming up and yes we did miss VDV yesterday even though people say we didn’t. I think Ange is going to have more players leaving and players coming in cos this squad is not good enough for his style of play. I think 2 more windows if backed will be before we see this rebuild really taking effect

Identical game to Wolverhampton home and away, defending team sits in and plays around our press using the wings. This has happened time and time again with teams that deploy this strategy and nothing is being done to combat it. I think that says more about the manager than the players personally; the players have proven capable of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with some of our recent performances and indeed past ones. There's too much talent out there to be solely down to the players.

A lot of fans see Champions League as the golden ticket. For me, it's not the be-all and end all. It's a false mentality and creates this delusion amongst fans and the board .
We've got more of a chance of winning the Europa League. I dont get where a lot of our fans get their delusion from, we've won 2 cups in 30 years, which isn't good enough, by the way. Yet as soon as we get a manager who wants to strip the club from top to bottom, and there's a bump in the, (be many more to come ) fans lose their minds and then its rinse and repeat.

Awesome analysis as always Alasdair. Lot of A's there.
Just an observation. How many of us fans thought we we're going to win at Fulham. How could we not. Beating Villa by such a margin was huge. I think thats what has caused this to hurt more than usual.
There were individual errors and collective errors on saturday. We probably lost that match after the first wave of attacks. To watch the team run round like headless chickens, felt weird.
    My reasoning is this.
The fans are more involved with the club than they have been in 4 years. We've definitely improved in every area since last season. The manager is working wonders with a club that was in freefall. As you said, people were exoecting us to be relegation material.
We need to get a grip abd realise, as painful as a loss is, it's only 1 game. Its not the whole season. I'm confused why everyone is having a knee-jerk reaction to this. Lets see if it galvanises the squad or if it causes cracks. Personally I'd rather take a performance like that now, than in the last 7 games of the season. I think it'll work out in our favour.

I think one of the key differences between Ange's position and that of the fans is that he is keenly aware of and has considerable responsibility for the players' mental well-being, since that is essential to getting outstanding performances and results. That, in turn, governs what he can say in public (whereas we know all-too-well the sort of irresponsible rubbish so many fans come out with).
A perfect example is the season LC won the EPL. They had an inspiring manager, a very good team that covered all the bases, and the entire media behind them willing the 'fairy tale' ending. Spurs had just as good a team, but were disconcerted, having become the media darlings under Poch, and we weren't able to match the intensity in key games, which increasingly impacted on our morale and hence on performances and results. Finishing 3rd earned the Spursey criticism. In contrast, we managed to channel the inspiration in our run to the CL final, but then Poch shattered it with his silly comments about leaving if we won (since he'd have achieved the goal he'd been set).

The fans calling for his head have to calm down. It takes time to build a team that performs consistently. If fans want to yo-yo between managers every 12 months, go support Watford or United. We have done that under levy, flip flopping between styles and ethos. It doesn't work as you never have a full squad that is aligned before the ethos and skill needs change.

Just a classic example of a Spurs DNA that Ange is tasked with changing, it’s a tale as old of time that Spurs go and win a key game and then throw it away to a mid-low table team a week later/the next game. Players need to remember it’s a 38 game season, every point matters, and each game needs to be ours to control. Why we don’t have a higher intensity over the first 5-10 mins like we did at the start of the season is a shame, the high press just isn’t there at times. Forcing opposition mistakes high up the pitch, felt that was the midfields biggest downfall, as Son and Johnson were pressing hard but Deki and the midfield 3 just weren’t there to support enough.

Ange's in game management is a bit of a concern, He stands on the sidelines with his hands in his pockets for the majority of the game. The best managers are pro active and adjust tactics during the game if they see something clearly isnt working. We clearly need upgrades in many positions though, Especially in the number 6 role and more clinical strikers. If we decide to sign the likes of Werner on a permanent deal there is no way we are closing the gap on the current top 3.

When we were down to 9 men against Chelsea, we kept pushing with the suicidal high line and Ange was widely applauded for sticking to his guns. No one criticizes his lack of a plan B, as evident in all the games under him so far.
We have arguably the deepest squad we've had in a long time, and the overall quality of the players are higher than those under Mourinho and Conte. Yet there is very little squad rotation. If VDV had remained fit, we probably won't see Dragusin playing for an even longer time.
Now, it's not that I'm trying to criticize Ange alone on this. Even Conte is a quite stubborn in his ways and doesn't rotate/adjust his game plan as much too. Mourinho is possibly the most flexible among the three, but the squad at his disposal was also the worst. All I'm saying is that a large part of our fanbase seems so infatuated with Ange that they don't seem to want to be critical of anything he does.

It's the hope that kills, especially with Spurs. Nearly all the excellent work done at Villa thrown away. Really angry. Makes one doubt it being as good as it then seemed - perhaps it was more down to Villa being tired, and eyeing their next game against Ajax than Spurs being brilliant.
The most interesting point you made imho is the one about this type of performance being characteristic of young teams being built (approx. 7:30 in ): a sort of immature complacency. I hope you are right and there is a big reaction against Luton, who are certainly no pushover.

Personally I would like to see more of Gio LoCelso in away games, he's secure on the ball and helps us gain control in the middle. I find our midfield can be a lil too direct at times which causes too many turnovers and we end up causing more problems for our defence.

This is the problem with analysing stats without watching the game. Regardless of Spurs not taking there chances we were second best all over the park and seeing as we’ve had more rest than most teams this season and Ange has had the time to implement his ideas in training sessions without games coming thick and fast you do have to wonder what’s being done on the training pitch! We still start games slow which dates back to Poch’s last season. Why we seem unable to break out of this is beyond me seeing as we have a revamped squad so it’s either the players mentality or the manager / coaching staff not drumming into them that the game is 90 minutes not 45.

Gallagher makes sense after watching that. Lack of dynamic energy in midfield and harassing of opposition. Fulham walked all over us in midfield and deserved the 3 points. No excuse for being a young team as Bissouma does not get a free pass and after a great display last week was at his worse here and he has no excuse. We cannot have players that blow hot and cold. Watching Sonny in tears of frustration and anger in his interview broke my heart. I did think Dragusin was OK given that he was being bombarded down our left side. Where was Udogie and the midfield ?

No dreams, a good night's sleep, and then woke up to the result against Fulham. Johnson probably better than the rest, but not got the strength of kulu and neither does gio who is just a weight or two stronger than Gil. Kulu isn't in the best form ATM, but...... He came out of the blocks absolutely flying and 0.25 of the season was sensational in that position, since the Chelsea game, he has been a bit pants, quite good tackling stats but certainly not somebody who Ange can confidentially build the team around.

Agreed he is not a true defensive midfielder and doesn’t seem to have the discipline to stay in the middle. However he can be effective playing in a more flexible central midfield role as he did at Brighton and supporters don’t seem to understand the difference. Going wide to cover gaps leaving the middle completely open is not the answer it’s talking to the other players including the two full backs to be more disciplined when the other two midfield players have gone forward. Paulinho is a good example or someone like Rodri at City. Most successful teams have such a player. It’s even more important when we play with such an attacking system.

Thanks for the video Alasdair. Performances like that against Fulham makes one feel like supporting Luton, Burnley or Sheffield United where at least you do not have great expectations for the rest of the season built upon some great performances at the start of it. As Spurs fans we really should know better. It was hard to pick a Spurs man of the match though as you suggested, Vicario or Romero were the only possible choices. Having a captain and two vice captains did not seem to work in this game as no individual was able to pull the team together. It just looked like a load of people running around at random. Changes are needed for the next game so the players know that their place in the team is not a given if they do not put in the effort. I would start both Bentancur and Hojbjerg in the midfield. I would also start Richarlison at the front and move Sonny back outside him.
