I dread to think what the educational standards at these private and public schools are like. I remember when I was at my senior school. Bebington Secondary School for girls we had a posh Private school not far from us called Purshore House. We always imagined them to be far above us educationally I always remember their uniform which included a straw boater. Yet I remember a girl came to join our class her parents chose to take her out of Purshore House as the education was so poor. I remember she had a terrible time trying to catch up to what we were doing. Yet it's not as if our education was brilliant. Personally I thought it was rubbish and I made the conscious decision to educate myself when I left. We weren't even taught about the holocaust as our history teacher was a holocaust denier.

I taught over a hill from one of the most 'prestigious' girls' private schools on the south coast of England, east of Brighton. I taught in the 'bog standard' comprehensive that serviced some of the most deprived areas in the city. When it was suggested that private schools should share their 'expertise' etc., with us commoners, the proposal was that our brightest and best should be sent over to the other place, the assumption being that they would then be taught 'properly'. No mention of resources, small classes etc., etc. Well, my suggestion to the powers that be was that we do a teacher exchange, knowing that the majority of my colleagues could teach the other lot into a cocked hat. Needless to say, that was not taken on board but, I am happy to say, the whole 'partnership' scheme was quietly shelved.

What was really disgraceful about this was not so much that Philps didn’t know this information beforehand (although that’s not exactly great) - it’s the fact that the audience member literally laid out all the necessary information for him in the question, and he STILL didn’t get it. He wasn’t listening at all.

I don't think that is the problem. The problem is that DRC is the 4th most populous country in Africa with some of the highest rates of movement to Europe, and is currently in conflict with Rwanda (the region where most ppl are fleeing from). So if the policy is to send asylum seekers back to Rwanda you would be sending Congolese ppl back into the conflict that they are fleeing, and although the minister suggested that they access the issues case by case there is no guarantee that these ppl wouldn't be sent back to the conflict that they are attempting to flee.
