I did a course once that is accredited by Cambridge and it was literally the worse course I’ve ever taken.

I live in a capitalist US and many of us are suffering from a lack of affordable health care, low wages for workers here in NY that makes it difficult to find affordable housing, costs of food hits family budgets hard, crazy insurance companies that charge too much, even with Medicare, on and on. Meanwhile our federal government is expending appropriately $900 Billion this year on the military industrial complex, and billions for wars outside of that. American life expectancy has gone DOWN, maternal and infant deaths are higher than other countries. Well, you get my point. Capitalism has its priorities screwed up in terms of how it spends its citizens money!

Just to point out, yes, Capitalism has "helped" people live, but we can go even further by helping more people with a non-capitalist system. The best healthcare systems in the world are all ones based on a socialised/national sort of system, which is the significant factor of helping more people live. It's the non-capitalist system that is further saving people (look at the US for capitalist healthcare to see a comparison between the lives saved).
Braverman says capitalism saved us all and we should all bow down to it in total gratitude. Forget all the sung and unsung heroes that sacrificed their existence at the alter of the common good - capitalism did it all. How insane.

Science is not the product of capitalism; science advances despite capitalism. That is what saves lives. Then capitalism takes advantage of science and applied sciences to make the very few richer by hiring brains and workers. Capitalists would not be able to produce a single grain of salt if it weren't for the people they hire (enslave) into the only sociopolitical system that they police and allow. Capitalism is based on competition. Social evolution and science are based on mutualism. BTW, mutualism is the biggest motor of evolution in nature. Competition is anecdotal in that respect. Open your mind, dear centrist Michael Walker; there is a better world beyond capitalism. We just need to be freed to test the theory and extend the same methodology that science and nature use to evolve society into a peaceful and just world without the danger of the opposite: wars and human-driven mass extinction. Sound familiar? It's happening now.

Michael and Aaron did a good job of debating the capitalism question. Although both men touched on it, a key point is that Fiona's definition of capitalism is probably different from what many of us were brought up with. I always understood it to mean private ownership and profit-driven enterprise in a free marketplace. The predominant system of government control of the marketplace and its many distortions and manipulations, to me, is something else altogether.
I suspect that Fiona sees the corrupt confluence of government, corporations and moneyed elite as Capitalism and she's right to reject it. It is the engine that delivers perpetual war, the deadly transfer of public wealth into private hands and heralds a dystopian future for what humanity survives.
