The Toyota GT86, the Subaru BRZ, and the Scion FRS--the tuning trifecta that helped define the meaning of ‘driving experience.” With famed Tetsuya Tada at the helm, and a Subaru Boxer engine under its bonnet, the 86 took off from Japan, splashed into the European and American Automotive markets, and ushered in a new era of young drivers and enthusiasts. Of all its accolades, the GT86 just lacked one thing...power babeh!
Join James Pumphrey as we explore the Toyota GT86, and answer the infamous automotive dilemma, “does making a faster car, mean making a better car?”

To me, the fact that the 86 has "less power" than other contemporary sports cars, and is also N/A, just makes it all the more similar to the 86 of old. People criticized that car too for being old and slow, but what a legend and unique driving experience it is and turned out to be.

On n’arrête pas de voir des propriétaire de gt86 dont toyota a cassé le moteur en faisant le rappel de travers ... mais c'est normal, vu la nullité des garagistes français.

    • @jpcrafton69

Every car has its own purpose. Every performance car has its own approach to "fun". A sports car relies on handling, feel, balance, tossability, and a direct connection to the road. The S2000 had that. The Elise had that. The first two generations of the Miata had that. The Toyobaru triplets had that.
For me, any approach to "fun" has value. Hell, I even enjoyed tossing around my first new car, an obscenely simple '92 Nissan Sentra E, with its 13" wheels, manual everything, and power nothing. It was FUN. If I'm to drive a muscle car or pony car, I want tire-melting burnouts, loud growling engine notes, and room for some friends. If I'm to drive a Grand Tourer, I want legs for days, power to spare, and room for some overnight bags and some golf clubs. If I'm to drive a supercar, I want to be looked at and I want to scare myself with more power and sharper turning than I could ever handle.
If, however, I want a car that feels like every ride on the playground, at any speeds, then I'll drive a sports car. The BRZ/FRS/86 is one of those cars, and it's a great one at that.

It gets it's share of criticism, but it's old enough that the consistency in it's design philosophy is part of the love, and the bulk of the power-critics have probably gone on to looking at different cars instead.
Meanwhile, the GT86 is much newer, and the big boys behind the engine (Subaru) love juggling turbos so much that everyone is wondering how one hasn't accidentally fallen into the BRZ yet.

I had a 2000 Celica GT-S and the valve program wouldn’t kick in. Spent nearly $1000 at the Toyota dealership to no avail. Turns out it was a simple fix, but this wasn’t known at the time (internet forums were in their infancy)

Finally! Thank you for doing this video! I’ve had a turbo in my BRZ for 5 years now, putting out 275whp, I couldn’t ever go back to NA. It should’ve come with FI from the factory, it didn’t upset weight distribution at all.

Gustavo Salgado It’s a SBD kit (the Greddy knock-off). Winter mix fuel causes an O2 sensor warning every winter but the actual sensor is fine. I always run 93 octane, E85 stations are hard to find in my city. I think the winter O2 sensor issue is probably an OFT problem, I should’ve gotten EcuTek. So I reset the ECU once a month in winter. No issues aside from that annoyance. IMO getting it tuned by a great pro-tuner is the biggest factor in reliability. I’m going to have him retune it using EcuTek and see if the winter O2 sensor problem goes away.

I just turbo’ed my BRZ about a month or so ago. Full Blown Motorsports Stage 2 kit, definitely made a huge difference! lol currently pushing way too much boost at 14 PSI, gonna drop it down to 10 PSI soon 😌

I have an FR-S and I agree the power is a little anemic however part of the fun is adding things to it to make more power, now you can get used BRZ/86/FRS's for 10-15k which is doable for a lot of younger people now (myself included) plus you can upgrade it over time making it more fun, currently I only have a cold air intake, cat back and OFT tune but I'm about to put headers on it and probably a supercharger kit down the line.

Id love to have this GT86! I drove in one as a passenger, on a race track, and honestly even if its slower then my BMW E30, it does not feel as slow as people make it seem to be.
Its not a super fast car, but for an average driver like I am, it sure is not slow! In terms of acceleration, its comparable to BMW e46 328i, which isnt fast car, but then again its far from slow and boring. That being said, I would not mind extra 50-100 ponies in it either :).It is really stable car, predictable, seems its fun to drive, and imho it looks awesome!
    10/10 would want one :D

As soon as I found out about the 86/brz/frs I loved it. It looks mean, everyone says handling is great, Its a 6 speed manual, and I love the idea of an average car that you can make a track demon. I see the 86 as a "make your own" car.
