    On the subject of the stock Unilli tire's defectiveness: (Not dffective...defective. Although I do stan DK. That guy's an international treasure.) The stock tire on the Onewheel Pint is VERY much a discount budget tire. You're talking $20-25 retail. Much less for wholesale pricing. That's what Future Motion puts on it. The problem isn't the design of the tire, it's the quality control. There are several instances of that model tire having a bump across the face that causes it to sound and feel like it's rolling over a twig every rotation. There are posts about it on Reddit, comments randomly scattered on CZcams, and I've experinced it myself. I've experienced it from seperately purchased samples of that tire. Fortunately, TC Racing was kind enough to just send a replacement, however the issue comes up if you have one that's defective right on your board. FM does warranty their tires, but if you've either experienced or read anything about their warranty process, it's tantamount to the second rung of hell. God help you if you have to go through that because your cheap budget tire was defective out of the box.
    On the subject of the Flight Fins Whisper for the Pint...I'm sorry if you're a Flight Fins fan. However they're not perfect and this tire is a huge miss. It is nothing like the Whisper slick for the XR.

      hey Mario my stock tire on my pint is fine however I feel now I’m getting earlier push back then I was before those sometimes I ride on cooler nights and it feels more normal. I have over 2000 miles on my board. Is this something that happens?

    • @TheBoardGarage
      @TheBoardGarage  Před 4 lety

      Not really. On the Pint it's codes in the controller at about 14.5mph. Perception of speed changes drastically after that many miles. And the lag between the app and board doesn't give a very accurate measure of speed in real time.

    • @ken-mb5cp
      @ken-mb5cp Před 4 lety

      Mario Contino thanks for responding so quickly Mario.I think I will just except the limitations of the board as it is now. And enjoy going at slower speeds. At some point I would like to buy an EXR though I would like an updated version with more updated technology.

    • @TheBoardGarage
      @TheBoardGarage  Před 4 lety

      Sure, the Pint is more fun for short trips, convenient errands, and joy riding. Small S curves and carving make it enjoyable for me.
      As for a new XR, it's doubtful that FM will released one anytime this year. Maybe not until late next year. XRs are still selling well, so they don't have much reason to change their factory to replace it. Even then, there isn't much room in the platform itself to increase performance. The XXR battery modification uses larger cells and increases range, and removed most of the battery sag. However even with that, the limitations of the XR still exist due to the motor power and the small form factor.
      Until there's a real jump in technology, all improvements are likely incremental.

    Hello Mario, it’s YOU, JIMMY, and STROH that convinced me to get an OW PINT. I don’t use it for work because its more than 20 miles out. Needed something to decompress from work and all the bad stuff in the news and the price point for me was reasonable enough. After riding mine for a day, I ended buying a second one so that my son can also experience the Float Life. Just being out in the trail even the pavement just gives me different perspective and my mind is fresh after the ride. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Yours and Jimmys content were the once I showed my wife to convinced her that it’s safe, I love Strohs content (I know, he’s EUC now) but my wife would have gotten a panic attack if I showed her his rides. Again Thank You.

    Bought that Hoosier tire after watching this. That description is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! I’m great on the pint, but was looking for something more like xr tire, with that flatter profile. Installed it last night, the ride feels so much more stable. It didn’t feel unstable before or anything, but it’s just better now.

    Just to relay a recent experience that I had with my OneWheel Pint. I put a puncture sealant called Tireject, which I really like, into my tire and shortly after the wheel started clicking like an old shopping cart wheel. Turned out FutureMotion puts puncture sealant in the OneWheel tires at the factory and my sealant reacted with their sealant to create a rock inside the tire that was bouncing around.

    I managed to get the slick Vega 10.5 x 4.50 seated. It's such a rigid tire, to get it on the hub I had to heat it with a hair dryer for a few minutes to make it flexible. For the seating I poured half water and half dish soap into a cup, then used a small paintbrush to paint the soapy water all around the edges where the tire and hub meet. I removed the valve core and started pumping with a big manual bike pump. Somewhere between 50 and 80 psi the tire got seated with a loud pop.

    I'll cop the Flat Out per your recommendation. I see on their site that there is a "Small Tire Formula" to flow faster for one wheels. I had to walk my Pint on a leash yesterday due to a tiny puncture. Thankfully, after setting the tire with the puncture at the bottom to let the existing slime settle at the bottom and inflating the tire and spraying with soapy water, it went away. I remembered that you recommended a tire sealant, so I've watched your video again. Thank you, sir! 🙏

But, I am noticing something bizarre. At the end of a ride, my mag handle is filthy. With the stock unilli, I noticed this with my rear footpad, but now the mag handle? Is it the added width forcing dirt out the sides? Very strange. Nevertheless, you are spot on when you say it's a stable tire. Love it for that. Thank you again!

    On the Vega, it looks like you should be using a belt around the tire to help force the beads to the rim. Yes, a soft tire will need a really wide belt, but even a tarp or blanket can serve to constrain the swell of the tire to help pop the bead.

    • @TheBoardGarage
      @TheBoardGarage  Před 4 lety +1

      I tried a strap clamp on attempt #2, no dice. I'm not going to invest in a kart tire band for the sake of seating a Vega. Hoosiers go on under 50psi or so without much help, and also I'm kind of done with tire testing.

  • @Will-kt5jk
    @Will-kt5jk Před 2 lety

    Got a 2nd hand Pint &the (stock) tyre’s got a slight (rotational) balance issue & a heavy bias in the wear pattern to where there’s a noticeable peak on the r/hand edge which amplifies any lateral wobble on hard surfaces (fine on trail) - pulls slightly one lumps back the other way. (previous owner may have been heavy or running v.low pressures as the overall wear rate is high for the mileage).
    Hence looking for a new tyre - good to hear the dimensions that work - annoyingly, Hoosier UK only seem to advertise the FF slick and the treaded for Pint (they may have the 10.x5.0 -6 in the catalog for karting -I’ll check). I’m generally trail riding due to current archaic rules over here (effectively ‘if it’s got a motor [& isn’t mainly human powered], then it’s a motor carriage, so motoring rules apply’ but with no was to comply except in private land, with permission), so might get the treaded.
    Might also check out some other Karting brands common over here - Maxxis, Mojo etc. so long as I can find reasonable dimensions.

  • @wizrom3046
    @wizrom3046 Před 4 lety

    Great to see you back! I was getting worried that the Covfefe19 had got you... 👀
    I'd like to correct you on one point. You said the light tires accelerate faster, that's a common misconception. Vehicle acceleration is a function of vehicle power vs total vehicle mass (rider + onewheel). Tire weight makes no difference. Dieting off 20 pounds makes a lot of difference!
    Lighter tires can (potentially) deform faster so they might be better at absorbing bumps at high speeds. But then so can a tire with less pressure. At onewheel speeds there's almost no benefit to a "lighter" tire other than it shaves off a few ounces when you have to carry your Onewheel. 😉

    • @TheBoardGarage
      @TheBoardGarage  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you! No covfefe19 here, thankfully. Been home with the family, working on the house and being a dad.
      Yes, rider weight makes the most significant difference in response and range, however tire weight does have an impact. All other things kept consistent, my XR gained 4.5 miles (on average) per charge. I tested it before and after tire change in the same week, body weight, temperature and route were the same. Even with normal variations, that's too significant of an increase to dismiss the effect the tire had.
      I realize that many riders easily dismiss variation when they perceive changes, but I make changes and ride with the intention of making content, so I take steps to eliminate as and adjust for personal variation. I checked with GPS trackers, not just by motor rotations.
      The Onewheel's single motor seems to be more affected by the wheel weight than other vehicles, imagine because of how reliant it is on the single wheel for both accelerating and microadjustments for balancing during the acceleration and deceleration curves.
      Response is more tied to wheel diameter, sure. Which is why XRs get more peppy from an 11" tire than the stock 11.5" Vega.
      However, all testing I've done does show less strain on the motor from a lighter rotational mass. I'd LOVE to see significant evidence to the contrary though, that'd be really cool to look at, and see what it is I've been experiencing that I got wrong. Would probably make a fun video too... Buuut, I haven't found it yet.

    • @wizrom3046
      @wizrom3046 Před 4 lety

      @@TheBoardGarage yeah you can definitely get an increase in range from a different tire. That is usually because of a reduced rolling resistance, same as if you increased tire pressure it rolls easier and you get better range. Thinner tires (less contact patch) also roll easier than fat tires.
      Regarding the tire mass and accelerating it's a bit hard to explain. Since the tire doesn't slip, ie it maintains positive traction, that means the acceleration is not of the tire it is of the entire mass of the accelerating vehicle. Acceleration is a function of the motor torque, gearing (tire circumference), and total vehicle mass which is being accelerated. You can use the same formula and replace the tire with (say) a winch tied to a tree. As long as you had the same motor torque, same gearing and same total vehicle mass you get the same acceleration. Since the flywheel mass of the tire is so small compared to the total mass of the vehicle it makes no significant difference.
      You made an interesting point about the hub motor making microadjustments. If you rode bumpy terrain where there is loss of traction then a lighter tire can make faster and easier microadjustments when it is off the ground. 🙂

    • @omot2491
      @omot2491 Před 4 lety +1

      Yes and No;
      YES - because you can definitely feel the decrease in rotational mass as kind of increased responsiveness of the motor.
      NO - because, it is a common misconception, that rotational mass will have much influence on the efficiency here; that's because rotational acceleration on any onewheel is way to slow so inertia is having just a minor influence. What actually is making a lighter tire more efficient (and obviously gaining more range) is rolling resistance. The important term here is “hysteresis” of the tire compound - hysteresis describes that the energy you have to put into deformation is greater than the energy gaining back from recovery. Any energy that’s not getting back is absorbed by the compound and “lost” into heat. So the difference with lighter tires usually is less material, so less structure needs to be deformed, therefore hysteresis will be smaller. Of course this is especially true, if the tire not only got less rubber but also thinner and softer, carcass. (the structural fabric inside).

    Are you saying this is a "vega"?
    I'm asking only because I'm thinking maybe onewheel (maybe) changed the tire brand/type at some point during production (??).

    awesome video mate. I'm looking to get the tire you recommend for my pint... But living in EU/Paris is a pain to get that delivered. Any recommendations ? Thanks a lot. I also see that you prefer slick to threaded tires... and I'm wondering why. I understand that slick give you more control, but if you ride in the woods or go "all terrain" wouldn't a hoosier threaded be a good choice? Keep rocking !

    • @TheBoardGarage
      @TheBoardGarage  Před 3 lety

      RideWithOKP Oh wow, I'm so glad you watched my video. I've enjoyed your content for a while now.
      I prefer the slick tire because of how it feels on pavement. It's a smooth feel, and treaded tires have a small vibration on the street. It's something I just don't like. I very rarely ride off road, so it doesn't make sense for me to have a treaded tire. My slick rides decently on trails, but I don't go on them a lot.
      If your riding is mostly in the woods, or on grass/dirt/gravel, you would probably want a treaded tire. But treaded tires also reduce range, and put more stress on the motor.
      If you are having trouble getting a tire for your board, reach out to me on Instagram (@mariocontinojr), and I'll try to help. We could arrange it so I get the tire and forward it to you.

      @TheBoardGarage  Před 2 lety

      I have, it's a good tire, but it's not for me, personally. The feel changes with that tire, and I've personally found that it behaves differently at different pressures. More so at least than the Hoosier. The Hoosier seems a bit more consistent across pressures from 15-26psi.
      But that's just my experience and I can't say how it'd be for someone else.

      Just installed the XtraRad today, I'd say these two are very comparable. • @TheBoardGarage
      @TheBoardGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      Well I wouldn't personally put that tire on the Pint. The larger diameter and tread width may make it a snug fit in the wheel well. Depending on mounting pressure and chosen inflation pressure, it may be a bit too tight for my preference.
      That tire has been very popular to use on the XR in NYC, it kind of became the default NYC tire for many due to its tight turning and good tread on rough city streets and gridlock Manhattan traffic. It's a great tire on the XR, very very nimble.
      However for the Pint, I personally wouldn't go larger than the 11x5.0-6 that Burris makes. And I've heard it's best at 17psi or so. Otherwise the profile squares out.
      I like the 10.5" diameter tire on the Pint. It's familiar, responsive, and does what I need it to. But if you have time and money to try other tires, it can be a fun experience.
