Silver Legacies: The Making of Croatian Filigree Jewelry

- The fiery birth of a pair of silver filigree earrings and the process of how to make jewelry by hand using traditional techniques is profiled in this episode of Destinations with Shawn & Tricia.
Embedded in the 1,700-year-old walls of Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia, this small jewelry store is still using a traditional jewelry-making technique passed down for generations. Viktor and Flora Čivljak, the owners of Filigran Split, were kind enough to allow Tricia and me to chronicle the making of a pair of silver filigree earrings over the course of 4 hours. Needless to say, it was a true pleasure to watch a master craftsman at work.

*Silver Legacies: The Making of Croatian Filigree Jewelry*
Standing quietly for 4 hours in the corner of a small workshop nestled inside the walls of the 1700-year-old palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, I shot this video to chronicle the process of making traditional Croatian filigree by hand. This vanishing art form is being replaced by industrial-scale molding techniques, and Tricia A. Mitchell and I wanted to capture on camera this 3rd generation jeweler as he plied his trade.

Went a few days ago and was introduced to this video by the couple's son. I love the necklace I purchased from this store!
Fantastic! So happy to hear that! I'm glad that Lorenzo is taking over the business. :)
Due to this video... I found this wonderful shop and met both of these lovely people and of course, purchased many earrings. Thanks.
Wonderful news Tammy! I'm glad the video helped. They are a fantastic couple, aren't they? We surprised them with a visit the other day, almost three years after we made this video. It was a moment of happiness so grand that our cheekbones hurt from smiling so much. We drank coffee and whiskey (at 10am) and laughed our way though a conversation of broken German and Croatian. It was marvelous. They are such kind and generous people, and it brings us great joy to hear that someone else is enjoying their work. Thank you for letting us know. Cheers! :))
This artwork is centuries old art. So much beauty is moulded into it. The final product can be auctioned for much more than you imagine. In india, it is being practiced in south of india only in odisha and telangana state. Of cuttack and karimnagar state. And it is hand made just like the gentleman is working on. It has achieved a GI tag and need of a UNESCO heritage certificate for its uniqueness and rarity.
Hi Karthik! Tricia and I have only been to Kerala in the south of India. We look forward to getting back. When we do, we'll have to stop by and visit Odisha and Telangana to see the local filigree in action. Thanks for the comment! :)
@@ShawnPMitchell we very much welcome you and your family members to visit our beautiful and serene places here in india. Here are the YT video links that you might like to look at :

Silver filigree Jewellery place where it was originated From. A beautiful coastal state called Odisha, Cuttack city where you get to see beautiful holistic places and beautiful artistic forms.
Well, i really dont know the origin of this artform. I bet its from Iran or Georgia. This art was introduced by our princely king back in 17th century. but it truly is magical art. Thats how i stumbled upon your video. The jewelry looks very much similar to our local jewellery design. Fascinating!

A Vast variety of designs only can be found in india. The extravaganza of our local 'desi' designs will surely catch your eyes. Ms.Tricia would definitely love our indian traditional designs both in gold and silver. I bet on that sir. Do check them links out in your spare. Take care. Have a good one! 👍🏼
just went today, the son is lovely and the jewellery is lovelier
Wonderful! That's great to hear, Anna. We were wondering whether or not the son, Lorenzo, was going to follow in his father's footsteps. It sounds like he is headed in that direction. The jewelry is fantastic, isn't it? Thanks for sharing! 😀
Que belleza de personas resistiendo toda la vida trabajando y creando!
They definitely work very hard, Sagyb. Their creativity is a reflection of their warm hearts and generous spirit. If you visit Split, you should stop by! :)
I love that tint little old Rolling Mill he has... that's so handy dandy!
+Van Calloway Thanks for the comment Van! His office was a cramped little stone room filled with gizmos that seemed as old as Diocletian's Palace itself. It's always a pleasure to witness a true craftsman at work. :)
your very welcome. I also enjoy watching great craftsmen at their work! great video sir!
Simply beautiful and very fascinating. I hope to come by in august to see all the gorgeous work you must do here for real. Amazing, thanks for sharing!!

Pure art I agree. Thank you for your reply, and for posting this video in the first place
+Shawn P. Mitchell I sent you a message through your FB account, it went to your "other" folder. I'm moving to Brac soon and I would like to get in contact with Mr Čivljak, do you know how could I do that? Could you please help me?
+treintaydiez Brac! That sounds fantastic. We have not made it to Brac, but we sure enjoyed the oranges from the island. I would contend that they are the best I've ever had! :)
Try contacting Mr. C through their Facebook page at: facebook.com/filigransplit
