  • Believe it or not, Air India used to be one of the best airlines of the world in 1970s, so much so that even Singapore Airlines was inspired from it. Luxury world class travel, the exquisite food and decor used to be its highlights. In this video, I take you through the journey of rise and fall of Air India. How one man’s ambitions and passion kick started this airline during British Raj times. How JRD Tata went far and delivered on his passion. How Jawaharlal Nehru nationalised this airline and why it eventually ended up failing to such an extent that the government was forced to privatise it. This is the story of Air India.

I had travelled Air India years back. Some of the front office staff were incompetent in processing changes to reservations and/or making a reservation with extra stops. They had to turn to their colleagues to assist them in reservation and/or changes. I had experienced this quite a few times including at their head quarters on Narim Point, Bombay. One would wonder how some of their clarical, ground and in flight staff got screened and recruited. Free air travel through political connections adds to losses. Give Tata some time and huge changes in management and staff would be seen resulting in Air India reverting to profit making and even becoming a comparable air lines to the leading ones

Although things are improving but in India still people go for a government job for the facilities and comfort, not because they like that job or want to grow in that field. This has to change.

In Singapore (Singapore Airlines) and UAE (Emirates and Etihad) Governments work more like private companies. Their decision making is largely done after opinion from independent analyst firms and consultants mainly industry experts.
Means Etihad, Emirates and Singapore Airlines are practically private companies in their mode of operation.

The problem comes from the system. Highly educated and intelligent people are required to work under uneducated people like Rabri devi. Sonia Gandhi will decide who shall be our prime minister. To get the votes write off businessmen loan, farmers loans. Our system provides for No educational qualification for MLAs and MPs , IAS officers have to work under elected reprentatives. Most of the Politicians want to make during their tenure. System fault.
