- In an unfortunate incident on 8th December, a military helicopter carrying general and cheif of defense staff Bipin rawat, his wife and 12 other passengers crashed near the hills of Coonoor Tamil Nadu. This was a modern Russian made Mi-17V5 model of helicopter which was going from Sunur to Wellington. It is used for advanced operations and also for professional use by Indian prime minister and the Indian president. Many people came up with theories on why this crash might have happened? Was it the bad machinery, pilot error or bad weather? In this video, I explain these theories and conclude which is the most likely one by comparing this with the famous basketball player Kobe Bryant helicopter crash of 2020.

As a senior helicopter pilot myself (26 yrs defence + 19 yrs commercial), the answer lies in the fact that the pilot decided to continue with 'CFIT' (Controlled Flight Into Terrain) due to sudden poor visibility conditions encountered short of the helipad - because of low clouds. This ultimately progressed into a phenomenon called 'Spatial Disorientation' which lead to a total loss of flight controls and ended in the fatal crash.
This was quite evident from the video clip shot by the tourists, from the railway track below, which clearly showed the helicopter going in and out of the clouds - shortly before the crash.
Helicopter pilots encounter this situation many a times - especially during hill flying. Some are lucky to come out of it, whilst some pay the ultimately penalty.
Gen Bipin Rawat was 2 Courses junior to me at NDA. God bless his soul.🙏💐

Dhruv. I'm a pilot. It's never sole VFR aswellas IFR. Flying is always combination of visual and Automation.and route is amendable anytime.navigation can never be so stiff... But restricted visibility as u mentioned is defenitly a Contributing factor for sure.its very unfortunate and tragic

@@thephilosophile6501 pilots from forces are trained to execute operations in most adverse weather. War can't wait for pleasant weather. Flying is only one part of their operation. What can we say This was an unfortunate event.. visibility plays a vital role however. I don't expect aborting a plan by such experienced pilots..unless they have strong reasons.

More likely what you said is correct because i have seen a similar crash of a helicopter 20 yrs back due to bad weather when the helicopter wheels strike a high tension electric cables and went down but luckily no fire started and few of the passengers were saved
Its recommended that when visibility is low to always fly under IFR... But reading equipments under such conditions having a higher official onboard can make the performance of the pilot critical.
No way. This 650 crore helicopter used normally in dangerous Siachen valley for rescue and other operations cannot crash just because of a simple mist in tea estate. Ooty is a poor man's honeymoon spot and not a dangerous forest or high altitude mountain. This helicopter must have several instruments to show altitude, obstruction and so on. Plus senior pilots were flying it. Everthing after crash including black box were quickly whisked away. Truth will come perhaps after another decade.

I was nearly died many times in Sachein when fire is open around 30 medium gun bombs fire over us in Rivari third glacier sathi post three fall within few metres n one of my friend was injured he is not well even today , after that we fought many hour battle with Pakistan n that night I voluntarily went to save his life and we mange to sent him to hospital in Chandigarh but at last all medal goes to officers who didn’t even present at our post …This is the fact it doesn’t matter even u all don’t believe
