I bought the cheapest Volvo C30 in the country for only $3,000 somewhere in northeast Texas. It needed a lot of help, all the suspension was blown out but the turbocharged five cylinder engine was perfect. I just finished rebuilding the rear suspension taking care of a lot of the clunking and banging under the car but now it's time to replace the entire front. We're changing the complete strut assemblies, control arms, sway bar endlinks, both CVs, and an oil change in one day.

Nice that the Car Ninja trusts you to help him AND allows you to use his shop.
As apposed to Tyler who just gets to watch
@@thelifeofjessejames well, Tyler has no mechanical experience, so it makes sense
Thinking the same thing.
I miss my old local shop. It was nice to build such relationships.
Jonny is the Best.
I sure hope Johnny charges him LOL
These C30 videos should come in handy for me, I just picked up a cheap T5 for about $2800US here in NZ. It needs a full refresh of the suspensions and bushings, but at least I'm saving it from being parted out.
I would recommend changing out all the subframe bushings and engine and trans mounts, its not awfully expensive but it makes a huge difference with front end issues. MY passenger side engine mount went and it would cause the car to mimic CV issues. Saved me a couple hundred dollars when i was so certain it was an axle.
If you plan on keeping this car long-term, I highly reccomend getting a DiCE scan tool and the VIDA software package. It has detailed parts diagrams and diagnostics procedures for all Volvo's which makes it way easier to fix. You can also change different programmed parameters and reprogram certain control units.
I have it for my 2012 V50 and It is absolutely worth it's weight in gold.
100% right helps a ton and you can get them on ebay and facebook for like 200$
JR: "It's that BIG plastic piece"
Volvo: "You just gestured to all of me."
🤣👌
“The Volvo that keeps fighting me... it just won’t let me win”
I’ve had 4 Volvos, my buddy has had at least 10, and this sums up Volvo ownership perfectly.
6 for me and I concur!
I feel like JR secretly works at the Ninja's shop.
I think the car Ninja is wanting to be as popular as the Car Wizard ! The only issue is The car Wizard is smart enough to not work on the PURE CRAP that the car Ninja does and that is why Hoovie promoted him to begin with !
Gotta have some side deal with the Car Ninja to use his facility
Yeah I've been thinking JR needs to become the Ninja's apprentice. Working on BMW's you are going to have steady business for life.
Watching how quickly you got this done is amazing. When I did the front end refresh on my V50 it took me at least 3 times as long, not counting time waiting for parts. It's crazy what rust can do. Also, if you're going to be keeping the C30 for a while, I would suggest some wider wheels with a good offset, it does wonders for handling.
Amazing what you can get done in 12minutes 54 seconds.
That's one thing that sucks about knowing about cars...
There's never any peace there's always something lol
He proved "Stupid makes Money by getting you to watch this, that by breaking this into "stupid segments",he makes $ from you saying,No $ from no knowledge.
I had a 2002 Volvo S60, I replaced all the suspension because of an annoying clunky noise coming from the front. Didn’t fix it at all 😂ended up being the subframe bushings
Which from the other video it showed that they were shot on his c30 lmao
i was just about to say this.
Volvo makes a kit to fix it. It is basically two large 4" o rings that wedge between the subframe bushing mounts and the chassis. The rear bushings of the front subframe are weak and will allow clunking during braking or Accel
@@ohmfab IPD makes some poly inserts which stiffen up the floppy OEM bushings and will prevent this from happening in the future. All FWD Volvo's should have them.
@@timweaver9773 Those inserts help for awhile but eventually you got to replace them. I reccomend to install xc90 subframe bushings they are half poly and they last way longer. If you want to go full race car get delrin subframe bushings from kahlenke racing.
Some of the engineering and design on the Volvo is brilliant. I did the front end rebuild upon buying my P1 volvo and I was really pleased by how easy everything was to do - EXCEPT removing and installing the LH CV axle with the M66 transmission. That was awful. The automatic isn't as bad.
I like that you do all this work yourself. Great job dude! If working on any of the cars scares you, you hide it well!
"This is the fastest part you're ever going to change on this car"
Just try removing the headlights. It's horrifyingly easy to do.
Car Ninja is a terrific guy and a great friend to his friends! Hes one heck of a knowledgeable mechanic also!
I think that's really cool that you have a friend that will let you work at his shop and help out but also to use that lift is a big plus that is for sure. Another great video I'm very informative as usual a person could really learn some stuff from you. Stay safe StayWell and as always God bless
Such a cool car! Definitely worth checking the subframe bushes
Hey, love the channel man, keep up the great work!!
I own a volvo c30 myself and that grinding noise could possibly be the steering column, very common on c30's...
I always like to see progress being done on a project.
Good job, man ! 👌🏻😎👍
You will want to look for an attachment clip or similar for the brake booster pump so that the wiring doesn't swing or float, or the vibration will cause a wire fatigue break. If there is noting, use a plastic wire tie to prevent it from moving.
Love the buy, fix then flip - I don't think even dealers try to fix em they go from auction to flip. Good show sir.
This channel has become my favorite auto channel. The rate at which you make progress is impressive.
Love the Volvo's ! Got a 1994 850 wagon and a 2005 s40 that's very similar to this c30 blast to drive And mines a five speed
Nice work!
So many cool cars at the shop!!! Rob's-- I mean Bill's-- I mean your Porsche is so good.
Perfect auto parts store! Glad you are an O’Reilly customer! 👍
For the air intake you take off that 90° elbow too It slides right out
I like how you upload right after midnight Eastern Time! Gives me something to watch, cause I'm up odd hours!
I’m always amazed at how many views he gets posting near midnight. 22K views in 8 hrs (CST)
My S80 had a rubbing grinding noise when turning. It was the heat shield on the front rotors. I just slightly bent them away from the rotors
With the amount of front end work done. Would look at the backing plates to see if they are bent. During a turn your rotor and hub flex just a smidge and it may be scrubbing
Much better view with the old camera. Keep up the good work man!
That’s just the cutest Volvo!
Love that car to. There was one in front of me before you bought this one. I was thinking how good looking that was.
I hope the front control arms and struts go this well on my XC90.
I love the volvo c30. Did you know that they actually made a few fully electric versions?
Really enjoying the Volvo videos, the front ends of those cars can be frustrating, I am constantly fighting random noises coming from the front of my 2012 s60, shame because it's such a solid car otherwise
Man, I wish I had a buddy like the Car Ninja!
Hey John Ross, just checking. did you put reman OEM CV's back in the car. these c30's and the Mk2 Focus ST that share this same platform are notorious for splitting CV's when you use nearly 99 percent of the after market shafts on the market and start clunking and failing after a couple 1000 miles or less. check the hydraulic passenger side engine mount to make sure its not fucked they are pretty bad for breaking and clunking. also check the lower torque mount they also clunk when rooted.
"This funnel makes it easy." Definitely!. You should buy a few and save time and trouble from spills/drips.
Any wobble to that passenger CV under load? Dealing with a bearing noise on my AWD, might pull the carrier bracket to inspect. Hope its not the bevel gear.
today i saw a 1980s volvo sedan, love those cars
Seems like a great car for commuting I wish I still have my 1997 volvo 850.....
Not with T5 engine. It’s just too thirsty.
Men if you feel some wired noise under your steering column when you accelerate and corner at the same time, there is a problem with your front shock absorbers + the metal support that holds them like a big metal washer.
And in 2-4 weeks if that wheel baring is broken you will definitely hear it. Mine resisted on the front right side like 6 weeks until the sound was unbearable inside of the car.
JR, I’ve been watching your channel faithfully for 6 months now and I have learned a lot more about cars than I knew before. Plus, I enjoy watching the things you do that are more intricate than usual. I’ve got a marketing suggestion: you need more females on your videos. They would make the channel a lot more visually appealing. Nothing like the softer, gentler side of life to take the edge off things when you like, share, subscribe or do whatever you want to do.
11:10 So, as I predicted the axles didn't fix the issue you were hoping they would. Which front tire is separated like I suggested?
Woot woot! You go!
Nice vid
If only I had a shop local to me that would allow diy repair in their shop
When are the exhaust and intake mods coming?
I'm curious as to what specific part madecthe car steering wheel shake like that.
are you using oem axels?, aftermarket axles most of the time dont work properly on those cars
It could be motor mounts failing or frame body bushings hope it gets resolved
OMG you did the service message HAPPY DAY'S :)
Did you get a clicking noise when doing a tight u turn?
Parts cannon!
Old camera is where its at. Good call
Been nice to see oil draining from pan. Wondered what the bg magic did.
When removing the cv axles, didn't some transmission fluid fall off? On my front wheel drove Jaguar X-type, some transmission fluid is lost when replacing the CVs.
volvos dont leak when changing cvs
They only leak a drop and only if the seal is old as hell on the transmission.
It's pretty cool that the car ninja lets you use his shop like that.
I love it when big daddy john ross fixes old hand me down cars and fix it up well yasss :)
Did you return the camera you bought?
Did you get those new taillights?
love your videos! But I just wanted to make 1 complaint, please do more update videos. Like, I'm in love with the ford truck, Bently burnout car, and the audi. It seems like you hit a speed bump on them, and just forget about them for months. Im happy with all your content, and love your videos, but please more "hooptie" updates
Check wheel nuts to make sure they are tight enough.
You can remove the vacuum pump and bypass it you dont need it, look up RS vacuum mod. just run a vacuum line from the upper intake plenum to the vacuum booster.
I’m still loving the blue trim
It’s ugly as hell imo
Alex That’s just like your opinion man
The Sock Monkey! I’m entitled to my opinion and to me it’s ugly. I’d never paint my Volvo trims in blue. It’s so distasteful as the original would have been a nice sliver I think. Mines sliver metal in my V70
Alex ok
5:57 what size oil wrench socket was that?
Nice e46 M3 on the lift at the Car Ninja's.
I always like that type of Volvo.
Didn’t you have torque steer on that? Ball-joints ok?
Drives car with a solvent-based oil flush in it. Well, this car would have had a nice engine for the buyer.
When it has no load on it, it's not a big deal, but when you're driving around and loading the internals with solvent, then you're doing a ton of damage. This can be tested by running those junkyard engines without motor oil and they will idle forever. The moment you put them into gear, the engine will sieze.
You should have stock in O'Riley's !
You should totally replace your theme song with 2:13 on loop! :D
Need the Car Wizard, he will fix it up!
Sounds like sway bar bushings
worth noting this car spent over half a year going down a road full of potholes at fairly high speeds. none of these issues surprise me lol
Nice to hear your a extra set of hands at car ninjas
I'd swear that Volvo is fighting to remain a hooptie. But great video. I can't say I'm a fan of where they located the oil filter.
Replace the stock intake with an Injen system and you’ll never have to worry about taking half the intake off to change the oil filter.
"Like pouring water in... real sketch" that's what I first thought. But if it works it works!
If I could help Watch JR Goes work on the Volvo C30 I would drink the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
Like just about every car, the repairs never end...
And I meant to comment on your last video, that the Goldwing haters have no taste...I like Goldwings, and if I had one like yours, I'd ride it everyday here in FL...rain or shine!
You don't really need to use that yellow funnel for putting BG products into the valve cover. It's designed for using on the gas tank inlet. LOL
Thats correct
I get the notification, I click it. Easy.
Didn't realize you got that car from Plano!
I think you forgot to put the nut on the cv axle! Maybe that is the noise you heard!
#watchJRGO do you know were i can find a good transmission for a 1996 chevy suburban k1500 4x4 automatic
When you get an O’rielys ad when you watch this channel >>>
you ever thought of getting some kind of headband mount for your camera, seems really awkward using whatever your using to hold the camera all the time, it's good to have both hands free to get stuff done
POV Hat
Probably a wheel bearing is bad. Very common on these. Spin tire and feel for vibrations on spring.
Plano, TX!!!!!
An elevate intake fixes the oil change hardships.
My old Element's front end needs replacing , you know if you need more content ...😂👍
I think the Volvo is a more interesting looking ford lol
Didn’t they work together with the Ford Fusion? You’re right!
This is actually just the Euro Focus, almost every part is stamped FoMoCo 🍻
But what does chevy make thats worth buying besides sports cars
Yes, with the 2.5 it’s basically a Focus ST underneath.
Trudeau Must go nothing modern. But a whole lot from back in the day.
I need a neighbor like JR. my 99 civic could have been tuned and my 00 Avalon wouldn’t be a boat on the road 😂
Maybe change the color to polestar blue? it will look awesome in that color
I think you forgot to put the nut on the cv axle!
Keep filming with the old camera please!!! I like it better than the new one!
What is up with all the late uploads? Me...going to bed.... Nope! JR notification!!!!!
It's early here 🇨🇮
check the dust cover on that rotor
Hey JR if this youtube caper doesn't work out for you, you can always fall back into car repairs. Also a lucrative field.
