    Two years ago my friends got together without my knowledge and bought me a 2006 V50 T5 awd 6spd manual in silver 120,000 miles for my birthday. I was both stunned and crazy grateful. What they didn’t now is my love for Volvos that began when I was three years old when my dad got the job as parts manager for a Volvo dealership in our town, A position he held for 17 years.
    My love for this car has only grown as my wife and I have driven it to pretty much every beautiful and scenic location in California. Neither my friends nor I realized it at the time, but my car is a freaking unicorn! And working on it has been enjoyable. I no longer listen to anyone who says Volvos are a pain to work on or expensive to buy parts for. Every scrapyard in my area has at least three P1 Volvos in their yard at any given time. And with my alerts on I am handed at least one more every three week to go loot for parts. Owning this car has been a dream. I’m now on the lookout for another one. After stumbling across “importsauce”, a CZcams channel run by a husband and wife in LA, I am now confident that I can swap out a P1 automatic transmission for an M66 manual, replete with correct software and every part needed for less than $2200 for the swap. Now I’m just looking for a features rich P1 with a blown automatic transmission and an owner who just wants to scrap it!
    I just want to thank you for doing your channel and for being a source of inspiration and encouragement for me!

    • @graham1800
      @graham1800 Před 2 lety

      I would be very cautious with this swap, if you read into some forums it has been done but it is truly a software nightmare. Also even with junkyard parts 2200 is a little low. But best of luck to you my friend!!

    Nice video & list. You must have a (many) Volvo(s) to identify so many of these nuances/ issues. I had the leaking sunroof issue on my 2005 s40. It was the only immediate problem when I bought it 2 1/2 years ago. I repaired it for a few bucks with new tubing from the Home Depot. All of the floor board/ insulation had to be taken out & dried. Fortunately, no electronics were harmed. There is a large class-action law suit regarding this issue, here in the U.S., that Volvo keeps dragging-out until claimants no longer own the vehicles or have given up, I'm sure.

    I am buying a 2013 C30 in the next few weeks. It's an automatic because I'm a weenie lol and never learned to drive stick in my 39 years. But it only has 37k miles on it and looks in pristine shape and was serviced regularly by the previous owner. Had to have it shipped to the east coast from out west. So can't wait to take it for my test drive. I already love the car from everything I have read and watched so I am super pumped to get it.

    Bought a 2006 V50 1.8 Petrol a few weeks ago with only 73k miles on the clock with full service history so but the car hasn't been used much.
    However, on the 1.8 check the water temp gets hot as the thermostat can get stuck causing the engine to run slightly cooler than expected. I've ordered a new thermostat housing for about £20.
    Also check the headlight horisontal and vertical adjusters, as the white adjusters are prone to stop working. However there is an 8mm Allan key backup adjuster but requires the headlamp to be removed. But it's easy enough as seen on the video.
    That's about it I think.
    Previous Volvo's I've had has been 340gl, S70 Tdi, 960 2.5, V70 and now the V50.

    Good video. I purchased a 2005 S40 T5 FWD auto new in 2005. Low mileage, 45,000 miles, but I have had issues. Lower control arm bushings disintegrated, which is apparently common. Headliner droops due to eco friendly glue. Shifter blind broke within the first year. CV boots cracked, as you mentioned. Rubber window seal strips are crumbling. I was 51 when I bought this car and treat it like I paid for it. The 1st year the car was a rocket and required only part throttle for impressive acceleration. The dealer modified the ECM and now it runs like a Honda Civic. The Volvo dealer sucks.

  • @65EKS65
    @65EKS65 Před 4 lety +1

    I'd add that some electronic issues are fairly common, but around 90% of them are because of tarnished CEM-unit connectors. It's located on the passenger side under the glovebox and many problems fix for a while when you just open the box (by unscrewing 2 hand screws) and shake the box a bit so that the connectors move a little. Turning the engine off and on again may be required in some issues. Of course this should only be a temporary solution and when you just have time you should take the whole unit out and clean all the connectors. There are also fuses in the same box which I would highly recommend to also check while you're at it just to ensure less future problems.
    I used to have these random problems once/twice a month like; lost wiper control, central locking stopped working, safety belt alarm didn't stop, "lowered engine performance" -warning and maybe more. All of these problems were solved when I cleaned my CEM-unit properly and It's been fine now for around 6 months.

    Hi.
    I have a s40 2.0 diesel 2005 (Ken) with the HDI Peugeot engine for nearly 4 years, and recently changed the timing belt at 127000 mile for the first time. The used belt still looked good for a few more thousand, though.
    The only maintenance I done was the 2 front springs had snapped on separate occasions (so many potholes on UK roads) and the 2 front shocks were changed, also wheelbearings all around.
    But servicing regulary (oil changes filter changes etc) is a must, and my volvo takes me all across the UK, comfortably and reliable, I love it.
    Great video, thanks for sharing

      Same here, I'm approaching 280,000 km on my 2.0D S40 and engine/gearbox wise, it has been very reliable! I lift the bonnet only to change oil&filters, or to top up fluids. I was lucky to have bought a 2005 model without the DPF and it's dreaded additive system, and with a disconnectable EGR valve without an error msg occuring.
      But since I drive the car hard, I've had to replace the dual-mass flywheel at 160k km, and since I was in there, I threw in a whole new clutch kit from LUK while I was at it and it's still holding up perfectly till this day.
      As for suspension/handling components, I've had to replace many of thoses numerous times over the past 11 years of ownership, everything from springs to struts to ball joints to bushings to stabilizer links to control arms , you name it ...

I have wrenched for 30 years, and Volvos are a bit quirky, but almost nothing lasts longer as far as bodys go, and the saftey is stellar, all the way back to the 80's. I almost bought a V50 T5 6M, but the P2 V70 T5 really hooked me. My previous car was a P80 V70XC, and before that an 87 745 Turbo. If you're thinking of replacing bushings with PolyUrethane bushings, you may want to do the front end of the car first. This will significantly reduce pitching when cornering., and give a noticeable improvement to handling. You may wish to replace your ball joints too, if worn.
    However, if you upgrade the back of the car with PU bushings, this will give a harder ride, and will drastically impair ride comfort, causing the effect of bouncing. You will also need to upgrade the shock absorbers to gas shocks on all four struts, to restore the ride to a comfortable smooth level. I would also recommend replacing the strut mounts at the same time, and strut bearings on the front struts.

    Things to be aware of: (a) Battery life, slightly shorter (heat) as the battery starts to fail, it does effect the engine performance. (b) Oil filter and flame arrestor assembly, can fail early in life, (heat) see if it has been replaced. (c) Disc and Pads as a wearing consumable can catch you during a standard service. (d) Drive shafts, yes. (e) fuel rail pressure control unit, difficult to fault find.

I did a little research and found out that the diaphragm in the oil separator unit which you show in the video was torn from age. • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  Před 2 lety +1

      The stock turbo will outlast the engine with proper maintenance (oil and coolant changes) and attentiveness to replace any seals as soon as they start leaking (usually not until well after 200k miles). I've seen the stock turbos on these cars last upwards of 300k miles, and that's tuned and producing twice the factory boost.
      Replacement is easiest if you replace both the turbo and exhaust manifold. This is a bit involved, but can be done with the engine in the car and only take a few hours if you know what you're doing.

      The R design didn't start until the facelift in 2008. To swap the mirror caps, you would need to rewire new assemblies which I did here: czcams.com/video/dOXyr09FPGU/video.html
      It's not hard to find replacement turn signal lenses from some of the major parts suppliers or online. Pop off the mirror caps and they're easy to replace: czcams.com/video/UhPsNhE-x3Q/video.html
      As for the front lip, if you want the R design lip, you need to upgrade to the 2008+ front bumper, headlights, and a few other little components. If you're just looking for the dynamic trim lip, good luck. Those were discontinued about 8 years ago and are very hard to find, but they occasionally show up on ebay. Heico used to make a lip for these cars as well, but no longer. There are some fiberglass replicas of the dynamic trim lip, but fitment is very poor.

    You reminded me that my 2012 C30 SE Lux (with some r design suspension/chasis parts retrofitted) D2 is due it's first timing belt change soon. I did hear that C30s have a common problem with failing steering racks. Apparently they make a clicking sound when steering, and if they do they're about to fail. With the D2 engine specifically , if you don't drive it often, there's an issue with the DPF which may raise engine oil levels too high, resulting in improper lubrication which results in engine failure. Also on all P1s, the plastic tip of the dipstick may come off and go missing in the oil pan.

      Hiroo Matsunaga D2 engine (found in fords and Peugeot’s) do suffer dpf issues if they don’t get a proper run such as a half hour run on highway motor way.
      It’s also recommended not to fill to MAX on oil dipstick. Leaving space for oil to be “created” when the dpf is regenerating, it uses more fuel.. and some can by pass piston rings creating this extra oil. Stupid design.

      TCV and FPS are both good items to replace as part of regular 100k mile maintenance. Though both are easy to replace and I wouldn't consider them to be a "threat" to the overall condition of a used car, nor would they give much leveraging room for haggling on the price. This list was primarily things to watch out for when buying a used P1 that could lead to thousands of dollars in repairs, unexpected damage, or items that sellers might think are more involved than they actually are. :)
      Checking the coolant tank for cracks should be a regular habit. I'd suggest you get an aluminum tank if you've overheated twice because of it.

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  Před 4 lety +2

      I don't have a full video on it. But it's fairly straight forward. Drain the coolant, disconnect all the coolant hoses and AC lines (you should have the freon extracted, not just released to the atmosphere). Unbolt the downpipe and disconnect vacuum hoses and the throttle body hose. Then unplug all the electrical connectors and remove any of the bolted in wiring harnesses. If you're pulling the engine from the top, you'll want to disconnect the transmission first, which also requires remove the transfer case on an AWD. Pelican Parts has some mediocre write ups for transmission removal. The rest of the engine removal is fairly methodical.

    Broken suspension coil springs, especially on the C70. CEM problems, usually down to corroded connectors. Aircon condensers fail. The 4 cylinder diesels as sold in Europe can be troublesome but that's generally down to the emissions equipment attached (the 5 cylinder diesels are generally bulletproof), recommended to change the transmission fluid on the auto at 70,000 mile intervals (Volvo say it's sealed for life but that's BS), the "Powershift" transmission can give trouble.
