Carlton King -- Do you remember what month? I was at Pendleton for some pre-deployment training in 1967. I hung out at a NCO club. Wednesday night was bingo night. How cool it would have been to meet him. I met the other Marine, LtGen Victor Krulak in Hawaii. I was delivering some documents to the 4th deck at his headquarters. Ran up the ladder, hit the landing on the 4th deck and nearly knocked some little guy down. The little guy was wearing three stars. I had visions of the gates of hell opening. He asked me if I always ran up the ladder. I said yes general. He said be more careful and continued on his way. Yeah, it would have been cool to have added Chesty to the Brute

I was once caught with my hands in my pockets by my First Sgt. He barked "MARINE, JUST WHAT IN THE F DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING? MARINES DON'T PUT THEIR HANDS IN THEIR POCKETS!" I stated "First Sgt., I heard Chesty Puller once said that a man with empty pockets and cold hands is too dumb to be a Marine".
He said "As you were", and never gave me crap again.
Did he really say that? We may never know, but I felt like a badass, and we know the legend of Chesty Puller is a great one indeed. Goodnight Chesty, wherever you are.

Don't forget he fought in Korea too. He was sent to the "frozen Chosin" Reservoir" I think that was the 1st battle of Korea The Marines had to fight their way in and then fight their way out. They were overran by the Chinese. This is just from my own memory so if it's not right excuse me But the story I heard was the Chinese were coming over the border so fast that they would give they would give the 1st wave weapons it's not the 2nd wave they they expected the 2nd wave to pick up a weapon and so on and so forth. If they turned around they were shot and killed by their own people. The only reason the 1st Marines were overran was because of the volume of Chinese I was told that There were so many men you would kill a 100 and there would be a 100 more.

It was in 1992 on CamLej in the Base Exchange upon returning from the Gulf War. I was in line over noon chow, and returned late. Once I explained why and showed my book, I gave some pushups and called it a day. "Jr" shot himself about a year later dealing with his father's stigma.

I think it was probably the right decision to make him retire. He'd suffered a stroke. He never would have willingly left the Corps... His poor wife deserved a little time with the old man. It's disgusting the Navy didn't give him 100 percent pay in retirement. Old guy was worried about money until his last days. This is a man who led and marched with his Marines well into his 50s. Unfortunately the military is slow to rectify these things.

The "Thumbs Down" may have been because of the inaccuracy of this video - or certainly if we are to believe Chesty Puller himself, via his autobiography. He was riffed out after WWI as a sergeant, but given the opportunity to go to Haiti as a second lieutenant, as a combat adviser to the Haitian Army in putting down a revolt. This was done with the deal of "...if you live, you might even be able to stay in the Corps, and there's even an outside chance that you'll be able to keep your bar...". The experience played a defining role in his subsequent service, especially on Guadacanal. Also - I am pretty sure that the video is equally inaccurate about his "not going overseas in WWI, but truthfully, I don't have enough specific recollection of that part of his autobiography, to be certain, and I don't want to add one error on top of another. These people could have at very least taken the time and trouble to read "Marine", by Lewis B Puller, before claiming to do a biography of him. Geoff Rohde - former Marine

This video was way too short. G'night Chesty, wherever you are. Time after time our enemies underestimate the USA because they don't realize that we have the kind of men that simply don't exist in their countries. Men like Chesty, Jimmy Doolittle, John Basilone, Richard Winters, all the men of the 8th Air Force, the men of D-Day, and on and on and on.

I ran across this video, after watching "MEGAN LEAVEY" __ I know it's "Hollywood" but I'm a dog lover, and Sgt. Rex was one of the greatest Marines ever. I was in Task Force Tarawa in Iraq. Just watch the movie. A lot of Marines gave their lives to defend. I am no good at this typing this kind of stuff. I'll never forget the night We got Pvt. Jessica Lynch out of An Nasiriyah, what a crazy couple of days and weeks

Big mistake not letting him deal with viet nam he passed around the time it was hot over there and that probably contributed to his death not being able to apply a plan he most definitely had to obliterate all of them .

As a Marine Chesty Puller was a legend. The sad thing is that men like Puller and Major Greg pappy Boyington both legendary men of the Corps could never serve today. The Corps like all the other branches has fallen to wokeism ... it is sad

How this man went from enlisted to officer back to enlisted to an officer again and still made it to a 3 star still confuses me

It isnt confusing at all. It just shows that Chesty was one hell of a Marine and was loved by NCO and CO.
