I remember my first Company Commander and the way he was as a leader. I also, remember the day he left, how sad it was. He was such a good leader, I literally felt like I could follow him into the depths of hell and have no qualms about it. He was so proficient in literally everything, his mind was sharp, his body was strong, but his spirit was intoxicating. Genuinely miss him as both a fellow Marine, and as a subordinate who felt like he learned so much from this singular man. Wish he was still around.
I like this guy. I know I didn't vote for Trump, I think he really sounds so genuine, decent, and honorable. My grandfather was in the Army from 1942 - 1945. He was in Brazil, Ascension Island, and Africa. He reminds me in some ways of him. General Jim Mattis would be a great choice.

I used electrician's tape to keep sand out of it. He said the electrician's tape would keep my weapon from operating effectively. I disagreed with him, saying that the electrician's tape would would keep the sand from getting into my rifle. In my view, sand would stop my M-16 from operating.
We agreed to disagree. But damn! His leadership in the battlefield led our battalion to crush the Iraqi Army forces like they were paper mache!!

I learned in boot camp. Weapon, gear, body. The morning after the worst sand storm I ever endured sleeping on the dirt I cleaned my rifle like my life depended on it while others ate chow. Later that day their rifles jammed while mine never did the entire time I was in the Marines.

But last time congress approved someone like General Mattis was George Marshall in 1950. So hopefully congress is smart and makes the right choice with selecting General Mattis.

Thank you for doing this wonderful interview. I was the wife of a Green Beret, and was approached by the men to present our colors at a Command Performance Banquet who were anxious to tell me how proud they were to serve under my husband. They were animated and happy to relate some of the training they had to go through and how my husband led them out on every maneuver. They followed him across the hanging ropes, the barricades, the mud trenches and the live fire under the barbed wire. He never asked them to go through any part of their training where he didn't lead out even with full packs on a march. He had a Disney call he made when he was ready to motivate them into action. I drove to the D Z one day to watch them jump and almost wrecked the car not watching the road. I saw the wind take a chute back up after coming down and drag my husband across a rain soaked field. And then one day, the inevitable tragedy happened. He insisted to take one of his groups to drop in Vietnam and blessed each one as they jumped from the plane as they hooked up to the jump line. Enemy fire was horrific and every man that jumped did so to his death. The plane, pilot, co=pilot and navigator made it back to base. My husband took if very hard and it wasn't long before he retired. I truly believe he died wanting to see his troops that he left back in the skies of Vietnam. His last words after the doctor's diagnosis was to his children: "I've got my ticket home." God Bless all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our homeland. God keep all our service men and women in our daily prayers. SOBEIT, AMEN!

I respect the hell out of General Neller and our last few commandants as well, however this man should've been Commandant at some point. It's a shame the Obama admin didn't favor Gen Mattis.
Agreed, but he was able to do some amazing work at CENTCOM and him being there also probably saved lives and killed more enemy. The man is a warrior, and despite the honor of being Commandant, I also think being in DC wouldn't have made him happy. I seriously hope he gets considered for Secretary of Defense in whatever administration gets in.

I love General Mattis. I respect him beyond words and love his ability to be humane, compassionate where it's deserved, confident and REAL.... He gave his life to the Corp. But listening to this makes me understand even more. He has the utmost level of morals and integrity. He doesn't comprehend or even have the words "giving up" in his vocabulary. General Mattis started his career about the same time I was in the Corps. The post-Vietnam era was not a good time to be in the military. Thanks God he found something worth staying in the Corps for.

A true gentleman, and Officer. I line my words up this way to express how, as a retired US Army NCO, a gentleman ensures everyone around them are at ease. I learned from a number of Officers from 2lt to General the importance of keeping yourself composed. A trait not held in high regard among NCOs across the Services. Now, not every officer is worth the butter on the bar but I had the fortune of speaking with Officers like General Mattis on a fairly regular basis. I couldn't wait to hear their perspective because no matter how bad ass we were or how senior we considered ourselves, some dipshit junior officer was going to inject an avenue of consideration that wasn't conducive to the commander's philosophy. Which meant, my senior NCO was going to ask me why my officer isn't doing officer things. I listened to the way they got their point across and picked through the hundreds of hours of bluster and learned how to interact with my Officers.
My hat is off General, yours isn't an uncommon leadership method. I encountered your level of thinking and maturity plenty of times over my career. It is however surprisingly calming to hear one of our senior leaders speak about the realities of military leadership.
