  • We asked for your questions for the Commandant of the Marine Corps on our official social media outlets and took the top questions to the top Marine. He sat down with one of MarinesTV's own in the Pentagon to answer your questions.
    Did you ask a question but didn't get an answer? You have another chance to be heard Friday, March 14. This time, the CMC and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps are hosting an online town hall from 4 to 5 p.m. EDT to answer more of your questions. Join the conversation at marines or send a tweet to @usmc with #AskCMC or #AskSMMC.
    Watch the video to see if your question has already been answered. Don't have half an hour? Click the time hacks below to jump straight to the answers you're most interested in.
    0:20 Why answer questions from social media?
    1:31 How can the Commandant lead the Marine Corps in a reawakening without a ground combat record?
    4:17 Why push the Reawakening Campaign when the problems it deals with only apply to 2 percent of Marines?
    6:17 Did the Commandant try to ban the Marine Corps Times from the PX shelves?
    7:04 How does the Corps plan to keep the most qualified NCOs in while getting rid of the unqualified ones?
    9:06 How will downsizing affect Marines?
    12:15 What is your plan to combat post traumatic stress disorder?
    15:31 Will you be punished if you seek help for problems like alcoholism?
    18:03 Can you speak about force integration and opening combat roles to women?
    24:48 Why bring back rolled sleeves?
    27:25 Why did you choose to call the campaign "The Reawakening"?

    13:50 My big brother Ricky was a Marine and served in the Vietnam War. He operated in Task Force Delta in Nam Phong Thailand and was an expert on all the weapons he trained on, that's about all his military records say. He never spoke about anything he did. I got his record from the National Archive.
    Unfortunately, he committed suicide not long after being home. He didn't have children, but it devastated his wife. Me too of course, but I was just a kid, he was only 24 years old and it still breaks my heart.
    So glad for your Commandant's taking the mental health of his Marines serious.

    Jim Amos is one of my favorite Marine Generals not only because he's easy going but because he understands that each Marine makes the Corps a unique service, he's also a man of high integrity and some of the quotes I've heard from him the last few years have inspired me even more! I have three favorite Marine Generals....General Shoup was just finishing as CMC. His career and post career was sterling.
      General Walt was a good Command General, and General Victor "the brute" Krulak was OIC of FMF PAC when I was in. I liked him a LOT for balls by Brunswick going face to face with LBJ....cost him a star and probably CMC.

    The General is by far the Marine that I have the most respect for along with Lt. Gen. Richard Mills who led the USMCR whom I had the supreme honor of meeting at the USMC Museum not far from MCB Quantico a couple years ago! Even though he's now retired General Amos was very straightforward but understanding, outgoing but caring, he really cared about not only the USMC but all our military personnel as a whole! Continue to enjoy your retirement sir and Semper Fi Marine!

    I agree with everything he said except for the spare no expense for medical comment, because I just got out last year and most of my Docs, Navy Corpsman, and Dentists are well known for misdiagnosing Marines, and making small health problems worse than what they were from the word get. Although I currently have a disability rating of 50%, I'm still having to prepare to fight for a Sleep Apnea case of an extra 30% that they kept trying to screw me over on, even though I rate the CPAP machine in black and white. He also need to micromanage the issues of fraternization, which I've seen lots of at my last command. Other than that, I loved this interview and how he was man enough to answer all questions given. Good stuff

    For Marines in a BEQ. Why is it that we can't have hotplates, George Foreman's, or even rice cookers?! This is a very big issue for Marines who are on comrats. Microwaves are far more dangerous, and draw more power than a rice cooker. Yet we are expected to eat well in the barracks? Would it not be reasonable to allow us to own these, as long as it's within reasonable guidelines (Own a fire extinguisher). It's very unsettling that a 22 year old man who's voted, who's spent time over seas, and is an NCO is not trusted enough to cook his own food. Thank you.

    • @jeepinbanditrider
      @jeepinbanditrider Před 10 lety +5

      So there many questions I asked about BEQ life on the ask CMC page as well as others and not a single one was asked or answered here. They don't live in the barracks so no one gives a shit. All they care about is how clean it looks while the guys out in town who married their high school crush and will be divorced in two years get to do and live however they want.
      How about forcing unit commanders to actually follow the Barracks Campaign Plan that came out in 2006?!?!? Most of the damn higher ranking people I talk to in my unit have never even heard of it because they don't live in the barracks so they do not care. I've met one person in my unit over the rank of Sgt that has heard of this. He actually had a copy of it on his external hard drive. The BEQ Campaign plan was actually a step in the right direction to bring Marines quality of life in the barracks somewhat up to par with those that live out in town but the wording in most of it leaves it optional for commanders to follow it so they choose to just ignore it.

    • @sanfranciscobay
      @sanfranciscobay Před 7 lety +2

      I would think the reason you cannot use a food cooking appliance is because of the potential of a fire when a cooker is improperly used. If there was a stainless steel room with a metal closing door, smoke alarms, fire sprinklers, food cookers would be safe.

    • @jeepinbanditrider
      @jeepinbanditrider Před 7 lety +7

      SanFranciscoBay every barracks I've lived in that isn't a squad bay was fully brick with fire suppression system. And heavy steel doors. Not a whole lot in there to burn except for the furniture.
      Basically as close as you could get to a jail cell minus steel bars and stainless steel toilets and sinks.

    • @sanfranciscobay
      @sanfranciscobay Před 7 lety

      Josh Downs. I don't know the layout of your sleeping/living areas. Do they have designated cooking area or are the areas for sleeping and living? You cannot cook food in a Public Library. There is a reason for most rules.

    I doubt this will get answered but here it goes anyways.
    Q: You say you're 'Keeping the best' Tier 1 and Tier 2' Marines. I'm a Tier 2, no negative paperwork only positive. I was denied reenlistment due to boatspaces. I tried to LAT move into a different MOS within my OCC field, denied again due to boatspaces. This process took so long, I now missed the deadline to LAT move into any other OCC field and have to give up my dream job and EAS. I was told I will just get looked over if I try to come back in because there's always kids fresh out of highschool that take priority over me. Why waste more money training them if I'm already trained, know my job and wanting to stay in?

    • @jeepinbanditrider
      @jeepinbanditrider Před 10 lety +7

      We just had a tier 3 Marine get approved for re-enlistment because she was deemed "essential". Bullshit she's mostly an empty uniform.

    • @TehMasta
      @TehMasta Před 10 lety +11

      Josh Downs Yup.. wouldn't be the first time I've seen that, ridiculous, it's like what even determines 'essential' ... I would assume that I'm not essential even though I've done a good bit if you ask me to be more competitive. I've been deployed to Afghan, high 1st class PFT/CFT, like 25 MCIs, was sent back to my MOS school for the follow on courses, high mcmap belt / pistol qual. only thing that probably hurt me was I'm a sharpshooter on rifle (missed expert by 5 points) but it's cool, I'll get out so a fat body turd who will probably get meritoriously promoted can have my spot! or some highschool kid who just graduated and is running around saying he's gonna be a big bad war hero.

      Exactly. Let me tell you, coming from a POG, nothing was more hypocritical than hearing highers say “we’re the worlds most elite fighting force, rah?” When our squadron has marksman and unqs, pft failures, four year tan belts, etc etc. it’s all lip service, and if one day some POGS got into a firefight, well, I hope they’ve been brushing up on basic infantry tactics because that little one month ITB they did 2 years ago and never again doesn’t make them the same as Army Rangers. I’ve been there and I’ve seen this attitude, people don’t even go to the Armory once a month to clean weapons. A lot of our leaders need to put their money where their mouth is and actually train their Marines.

    The Corps is always the 1st to respond and is already the smallest organization.
    Downsizing should only apply to the ones who are not doing their job and/or are trouble makers of the worst kind.
    We read about top officers who think they are above the regs and laws often getting a wrist slap when caught doing something wrong, usually a quick transfer.
    There needs to be total discipline and honor in the Corps to be what it is expected to be and that includes women Marines as well.

Sgt Meee walks near and stands at Parade rest, waiting for break in Skipper-Gunny dialog to render a salute. But that time will NEVER HAPPEN as skipper send boot up Sgt's butt for being disrespectful by not saluting.
    So, salute and interupt or wait?

    You don't need to down size the Marines. We need 230,000 Marines. If we have 2 wars roll up and bite us. Who will fight the battle's. It's hard to train 100,000 NCO's . you will be getting rid of 10 year vets that know the job well. Keep the newbies. Not be ready. Keep the Gurneys!

      +behvac I think the following totals: 450,000 USAF, 480,000 USN, 700,000 USA, 255,000 USMC + National Guard and Reserve Components.

This is the same stupid bullshit we hear from our BC's and Sgt Majors, the things you said in this video are not exactly reality on the ground. Nice try James!

    @12:18 In the infantry units, which he has no experience in, the Commandant is completely wrong. The joke is, "Hey Gunny, I can't make the 26 mile hike." "Why not Marine?" "My leg is broken and I have a cast on Gunny." "Hydrate and suck it up Marine, you are going." The point is, most are not able to ask for help. No Marine wants to be known as a "broke dick" and going into his reenlistment situation reasoning, most Marine's pros and cons will reflect for under performing or not performing based on the needs of our personal situations. Marine's complain about the problems we have had and we are not able to get the VA's help or the percentage that we need to take care of ourselves based on lack of paperwork. This paperwork is lacking because we are not trying to limit ourselves and have our pros and cons reflect and be known as a broke dick. Yet, we can always ask for help apparently. Also, if a unit leadership fails, then shame on them. How do they learn? What is the environment and who is setting that tone? Shame on anyone who wears our cloth and does not reach out to help out another Marine. Shame on the senior leader of the Marines who does not set the tone, provide the direction to cultivate the environment and mentor the leaders in those units to ensure that they are taking care of these areas of concerns in the manner that they should be. Take ownership of your Marines. JJDIDTIEBUCKLE does not say point the finger and place blame. Shame on who? Semper Blue falcon?

    For Those AWARDED a red folder when going through processing, do they exit or get detained? Timothy Ryan Olds received one at MEPS of Troy Michigan, but was released. This was back in 2015. Perhaps it was due to a covert mission to learn why we forgot that freemasons were given the opportunity to hide nukes on farmland often masked by what would appear from arial swimming pools. North Korean insurgents in search of such in USA, SAMSUNG HQ TWIN TOWERS IN NORTH KOREA.

      Dont sign for an 0321 contract, if you fail BRC theyll stick you into whereever, you need to be physically fit, have a mentality that youll die before you give up, and be able to go incredibly long distances before you get tired(endurance). My uncle told me what BRC was like back when he was in and you had people drowning in the first week. 2 people have died at BRC in the past year. Sign for an 03 contract and sign up for BRC when at SOI, thats what im doing.

    An airwing guy as the Commandant, "C'mon man". There's not an inch of leather on this guys face/neck. Leather is made from exposure to the elements for months and years and decades & barfights, not in climate protected/controlled cockpits or at the O's chow hall. With all due respect to his service, he's no Grunt.
