Honestly the fact that hiruzen didn't mandate a care taker for Naruto is mind boggling. He could have gotten anyone literally anyone to take care of him but just didn't.
My answer would be take a member from every ninja clan and have them live in a compound I created specifically to keep Naruto safe. They keep the kid safe, train him, and they're his "uncles". No one in the village better question it...

Well there had to be someone taking care of him because baby Naruto couldn’t just survive in an apartment by himself
Tsunada, his closest living family member, even ignoring the Minito's mother theory she was related through the Uzumaki clan. It might have even gotten her back into the village.

Naruto has horrible chakra control, even though he is able to use the rasengan in Canon, and being both a healer and a Senju, Tsunade would know alot about chakra control exercises. Healer because you need a lot of chakra control for that, and Senju because, while not directly stated, their wellspring of youth could be interpreted as large chakra reserves.

@@cameronjadewallace Actually with context clues it's safe to assume Naruto was in an orphanage for 2-3 years then got kicked out and fished in the woods to stay alive till he was 4-5 where he met Hiruzen who took one of his fish then now that they've met he got his signature apartment and allowance, why do I place it like that? It wouldn't make sense if he never met Hiruzen while having an apartment given to him by Hiruzen and having to collect his allowance from someone.

Stepping out of the fictional world for a second, I find it bizarre that kishimoto didn’t make some attempt to explain how naruto was raised. I get that being a lonely orphan was a big part of his backstory, but maybe Hiruzen could have hired a rotating team of nannies to watch after Naruto? You could say that they all kept their distance and were afraid of him or something like that. Just weird that we’re supposed to assume naruto was thrown into an apartment as a baby and left completely alone and somehow survived

@@karmaascendant3936I think he was 6 years old when he had to start living on his own cause everyone felt uncomfortable around him since most adults wanted to kill him or hated his existence since they all knew he had the Nine tales inside him and Hurizen decided not to tell anyone who Naruto's parents were. Dude thought it would be better to just give a 6 year old a monthly allowance and left him alone with Anbu watching to make sure he doesn't get killed.
He was probably raised by Anbu ninja in shifts. Like the Sand but without the murder attempts. Someone taught him to read, write, and maths. Someone taught him to cook and clean.
I just figured as he got older they just quit interfering so close. More like just followed him around to prevent the weapon from getting killed.
The first person that comes to mind is Shikaku, Shikimaru’s dad. That part in og Naruto where Shikimaru asks why everyone hates Naruto and he just goes “if you think he’s cool then don’t worry about what everyone else says” is such a Chad move. Also he’s one of the if not the smartest character in the whole series so he would’ve passed that along to Naruto. He’s a super experienced ninja and just an overall good dude.
Also Sasuke's mom. If I'm not wrong, she was friends with Kushina and even tried to adopt Naruto... But then Danzo made that impossible because that would mean the Uchha clan would get the Nine Tails.
Seriously fuck Danzo, all of Danzo's actions harmed the leaf village in the end. He can posture all he wants, but his actions nearly led the leaf to annihilation in his bid to protect it.

Danzo had some Root agents disguised as regular Konoha Shinobi transformed into Iwa Shinobi infiltrate Ame, where they encountered the Akatsuki. The ROOT agents attacked the Akatsuki and the Akatsuki defended themselves by killing the attackers. Then Danzo told Hanzo that the Akatsuki killed some Konoha shinobi, and ordered him to deal with them on threat of war.
It’s almost a miracle that kakashi was anything close to a functional ninja

To add to this, Shikaku is legitimately one of the best parents we see in the series. He raised Shikamaru to be a strong shinobi, and when it came to Shikamaru grieving over Asuma, he was there for his son. He encouraged Shikamaru to not just hold it in as he always did, but instead to actually let it out.
To a kid like Naruto, raising him with proper emotional support means a lot.

Hiruzen should have treated Naruto as a hero for housing kurama and requested a family to adopt him, not stick him in an apartment by himself when he was 4.

I don’t get why Jiraiya escapes all the blame for this, Jiraiya was literally Minato’s chosen godfather for his son and he was MIA for most of Naruto’s life. Hiruzen being asked to watch over him I think was anime only.

For my part, especially with how neutrally he talks about Naruto compared to the rest of the village, you could make a case for asking Shikaku to take care of Naruto. Shikamaru ended up being one of his closest friends growing up anyways, them being adoptive brothers wouldn't be that much different.
Also the fact that shikaku and the naras were one of the few clans that didn’t immediately hate Naruto for kuramas attack on the leaf and they always believed in him too. Look at how shikaku talked about Naruto during the pain arc etc

I wanna know who took care of Naruto until he was able to live alone. Who nursed him and change him for his first 1 to 2 years of life?? Hiruzen could of set him up within his own clan and Jiraiya could have came and visited him once every few months for a few days and went back out to spy. They all messed up.
Odds are, an orphanage. According to one of the Itachi light novels, Hiruzen did successfully hide Naruto's identity entirely and the village saw him as an ordinary child until Danzo leaked his identity as a vessel and that's when the village started hating him. Until the leak, Naruto was just another, normal orphan to them.

All the Orphans from the attack were put under the Hokage's administrative care, which danzo didn't like very much, he ended up revealing the truth which basically promted Hiruzen to be more directly involved, and as soon as Naruto could live under supervision, yeah he wasn't alone just under supervision, he was sent to the shittiest appartment in the leaf, as far away from the others as Hiruzen would allow, hence why Naruto was quickly enrolled into the academy because this way he would be surrounded by Jonins and kids rather than being alone. But that didn't go quite as well either, because DANZO.
Regardless Minato is to blame really, He spend time sending Jiraya the Key but not the fucking details or request to foster his Son? REALLY and we are ignoring the fact that resealing Kurama in Kushina would have saved Kushina, and before you go but she would have died from the injuries... yo hello Kurama healing powers, you think kurama would be sure thing, let me just let my host die. No he would pull a Momoshiki and heal Kushina up... Noone really needed to die until later when Kushina could have transferred all of Kurama to Naruto, instead of just the Yin half (actualy i cant remember if it was the Yin or the Yang half but my memory says dark Kurama = Yin). So really Yes you are right, but complete mistake by our lovebirds, everyone makes mistakes, and in Naruto usually that results in a Kage's death.

I also vaguely recall a story where Hiruzen paired off Kurenai and Kakashi and had them act as a married couple with Naruto as their kid.

Not only was he the child of a war hero, he was a literal walking nuke that hadn't it been for a random ramen guy and his teacher would probably have blown up the village, either for revenge of for being unable to keep kurama under control. No one seems to be talking about this but Saskue's mom (her Kushina were friends) actually wanted to adopt Naruto and she went to see him in the hospital right after the Kyuubi incident but she wasn't allowed to do it because she was an Uchiha.
The even sadder part is that Naruto used to have a rotating team of Anbu guarding him.
He even recognizes cat and later Kakashi as one of his former guards while they are out of uniform.
Which means they needed ANBU to guard a child and that said ANBU was forced enough times to have direct kontact with said child, that dense child Naruto could recognize their scent.
Jiraiya should've honored Minato and Kushina by raising Naruto after their deaths.

There are a lot of micro plotholes and weird quirks in Naruto that exist because Kishimoto liked stacking onto preexisting plot points without care of reproduction (the leaf having the Reaper Mask and Orochimaru never wanting to use it, Madara's plan, Shukaku not recognizing Kurama or using a Tail Beast Bomb, etc.) and Jiraiya's connection to Minito is probably one of them.
like it feels strange in retrospect Jiraiya not being involved in Naruto's life until the age of 10 just because if he was his godfather. like I understand he was researching the Akatsuki for a lot of it but also he didn't agree to any of his dying wishes.
The reaper mask thing can be easily explained, orochimaru had to do research after experiencing the seal for the first time and after that, infiltrating the leaf again wasn't going to be easy. It was because the majority of the fighting force was at war that he went to retrieve it.
Shakaku not "recognizing" kurama could easily be explained by the fact that he saw it was just a transformation and that the story was not framed from his perspective so we do not see his internal reaction to seeing someone using that form. You can call this part speculation but the tailed beast bomb would have been useless since gamabunta was shown to be agile enough to dodge the wind blasts which was faster and didn't require the charge time that the tail beast bomb needed.

As far as jiraiya's approach, there can be two explanation. The first is that of priority, he understood that what he had to do outside the village was more important and trusted the care of Naruto to the village, similar to Minato understanding it was necessary to sacrifice Naruto for the balance of power and trusted the village to pick up where he left off. The second is the trope of letting the boy survive and then train him when he's self-sufficient, similar to how in Dragonball, piccolo left Gohan to his own device for the first 6 months of their training in preparation of the Saiyans.
No one in the village wanted to take care of Naruto because he was a demon for them. Maybe Sasuke's mother was the closest person to take care of him because she was Kushina's friend but no one will give the Uchiha the Kyubi again

At no point in my post did I blame any character for anything. If you did bother to read, you'd discern that I mentioned a trope that was used, which could indicate a sign of bad writing.
Even if he wasn’t the one directly raising him (because he was literally 14) it would have done Kakashi a lot of good to be involved in Naruto’s childhood. The dude had lost his entire family for the second time, he could do with some more human connection.
Low-key Iruka sensei was the closest thing to a father figure for naruto. He was still a child when his parents died when the village got attacked by the nine tails
It should have been Sasuke's mother; Mikoto. Imagine a situation where Naruto and Sasuke were legit raised as brothers. I'm sure holding their own Uchiha power and the Nine Tails as bargaining chips, the massacre would have never happened. I doubt they would have fully taken over the Village, they basically just wanted to stop being treated as second class citizens and being isolated towards the edge of the village.
I think both Fugaku and Mikoto wanted to, but Danzo's snake ass had an stroke and said absolutely not.
Honestly, they or any of the clans would have been the best choice, but there's no way that a**hole Danzo would have let the Uchiha take in Naruto. Why none of the other clans offered or were allowed, I don't know.
It would have provided an interesting alternate take on the theme of acceptance since the Uchiha clan was so opposed to outsiders joining the clan. You'd have to deal with the different ways the village *and* the Uchiha see Naruto, too.
Edit: And you'd have the Uchiha having to deal with Danzo leaking that *they* have the nine tails jinchuriki now, which you know he would. All while the village still blames them for the attack in the first place.

Mikoto! If not her, maybe reach out to one of Minato and Kushina's othet friend?! Anybody! Are u telling K&M had no other firends?! Maybe the Naras or the Aburames? They are noble clans and have been nothing by loyal to the hidden leaf.
Maybe if Naruto was a normal kid, sure, but remember that our boi is the host of the 9tails *and* the son of Minato aka one of the most notorious ninja the leaf has fielded so keeping his existence as lowkey as possible was for the best. Naruto also would've put a giant bullseye on whatever person or clan took him in and I don't think anybody wanted to take the risk for a kid that's not even theirs.

Kushina may not have had many friends. The Whorl within the Spiral indicates she spent much of her life as Jinchuriki confined to a small portion of the core of the village due to the type of seal that was used. It was only when Minato upgraded her seal that she was able to move about the whole village freely.
Tsunade was also always an option with Naruto being basically her last living relative. With Kakashi I can see it because he would've been a very good influence on Naruto unlike the other 2. Jiraya would just make current Naruto but a perv, and Hiruzen would've bern pretty buisy and Asuma was away or dating. But Kakashi could've made Naruto a whole lot calmer, collected, and not an idiot. And Naruto would've no doubt met Itachi more often which would also help him learn and be calm.
Whoever became hokage was supposed to take care of Naruto that’s how the job should have been chosen hiruzen came back and ignored the 4ths only wish

Raising the vassel of the 9 tais is not something just anybody could do. More important, Hiruzen should ve raised Naruto himself, it Jiraya was unwilling to do it or at the very least find somebody to do it (somebody from his clan maybe).

How about a more trustworthy clan than the Uchiha? One that has been loyal to Konoha from the begging, like I dont know - the Nara, Yamanaka, Aburame, Inuzuka, Izuna. There were options. Hiruzen choose the worst one.
A lot of people argue hiruzen couldn't have raised Naruto because he was Hokage, except he had 2 kids during his tenure as hokage. And was at the very least able to assign someone to watch his grandson.
So even if hiruzen couldnt have raised him, he could have done more.
Jiraiya accepted the position of godfather, him not coming back until Naruto was 12 and then throwing him off a cliff when he did, not great.

Ok see Karama had to be freed from Kushina in the attack that killed Narutos parents, If Naruto was with the Uchiha after that the coup would've worked either by freeing Kurama again or Naruto siding with the Uchiha while having the strongest tailes beast on command.
If Naruto was with the Uchiha the story of Naruto wouldn't happen. Hiruzen would die 20yrs prior, leaving no Konoha, The Uchiha would band together to fight or join Obito/Madera and Madera would have cast infinite tsukyomi unopposed or upon the ashes of the Uchiha village.. Story over in 2 seasons
@@bgrego88 Not really. I think you are forgetting the coup took years to build up too. Sasuke and Naruto were 6 or so when it happened. It was how the village treated them after the nine-tails attack that cause them to want to take down the elders and overthrow Hiruzen as Hokage. Giving Naruto to them prevents ALL of that.

@@donsamsey So? Other than Danzo,who had WAY to much power because Hiruzen was a fool and let him do whatever he wanted, no one would have really had much to say. Mikoto was likely his god-mother as she was Kushina's best friend (which was stil an Uchiha with the nine tails jinchuriki).
The coup only happened because of all the shit that happened after Naruto's birth and how disrespected the Uchiha felt (rightfully so they were intentionally being made the punching bag of the village by Danzo). But if they got the nine tails Jinchuriki they wouldn't feel slightly. Its a big honor, responsibility, and shows respect for their clan. So even with some of the things done they wouldn't have reached that point of planning a coup. Also Hiruzen would have actually had to go and talk to them now and then instead of relying on Danzo to tell him what was going on. It cuts Danzo's overall power in that situation in half.

1. A sharingan appeared in Kurama's eyes during the attack which pointed to the fact that it was done by an Uchiha.
2. The person controlling Kurama doesn't even have to be on the battlefield as shown from the fact that Obito was barely on the battlefield as he was somewhere else fighting Minato.
3. The Uchihas are the only people alive who have the ability to control tailed beasts and they have a terrible reputation.
4. The reason they weren't allowed on the battlefield was because Danzo already suspected them to have a hand in the attack which was why he convinced Hiruzen to order for them to stay away from the battlefield.
Kakashi was watching from afar and when team 7 formed he was truly there for naruto whenever needed

Mikoto (and Fugaku). Trusting the Uchiha with taking care of the Jinchuriki son of the 4th Hokage is a huge vote of confidence and could have been part of deescalating tensions before they got to the levels where they ended up
Kakashi having the job to look after Naruto might just bring him out of his depression and make him happy
I have read a few fanfics where he adopted naruto while being emotionally unstable and suicidal but naruto helped make him happy and then when danzo got in the way and made it so kakashi could not raise naruto kakashi got broken and desperate to where he actually asked his friends for help

The craziest thing about Hiruzen taking care of Naruto is that he literally could have just forced or paid ANYONE he chose to take care of Naruto. He is the literal Hokage what would they have done if he was just like “hey I got this orphan kid and I need someone to take care of him so he isn’t alone while I focus on being Hokage” he could have picked any Shinobi to pose as a regular villager and care for him, he could have picked any villager to act as a nanny or something.
Sauske's family could have done it. Imagine that alternative world where Naruto and Sauske are actually brothers.

It should have been Mikoto. She was Kushina’s friend and already had raised Itachi and was raising Sasuke.
But the problem is that her advocating to take custody of the Nine Tail’s Jinchuriki was that since she wasn’t uld cause a stir since she’s the Uchiha Matriach which would have been seen as a political move.
Maybe that’s why she was down to usurp the Leaf Villaige. Denied to raise her friend’s son and forced to see him being emotionally abused and neglected all because they are afraid of her as an Uchha.

Kakashi feels like an answer only because we as an audience know he would become his sensei. Jiraiya was MIA and god knows if the Leaf even knew where to look for him. The 3rd had an entire village to look after with no good successors to replace the 4th.
As one of the strongest clans, it makes sense they'd hold a degree of rank in the village (surprising none have ever been in the running for Hokage) and they could take care of the 4th. Naruto would probably be raised by a side branch family if not the main house.
But really, I prefer things end the way they did in universe. Even if it is head scratching why Naruto was left the way he was.

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, Jiraiya wasn't actually Naruto's godfather that was just a translation issue, instead Jiraiya was a "name conferring parent" an old Japanese tradition.
You are essentially correct. He makes himself look ignorant every time he says this because it's been repeatedly explained he wasn't a godfather and that the word isn't accurate despite being what they used for localization.
Plus, he didn’t want the responsibility of being a godfather anyway, as he specifically stated when Minato told him the news

What I want to know is who took care of newborn to toddler Naruto. The bottle feeding and general baby rearing, plus the basic motor functions once he would be old enough to start speaking or walking.
I could maybe see someone like Iruka, with him teaching all the time and being a ninja, he would have both been around a little (but maybe not enough to stop Naruto being a feral) and also given some ninja training. He also seemed to actually care about Naruto, which is nice.
Iruka was a 10-11 year old child when the Kyuubi incident happened so it wouldn't work.

It definitely should have been fugaku. As at the time nothing was known about the uchiha massacre, fugaku is an obvious answer. Sasuke and naruto were shown to like eachother at birth and fugaku and minato being friends, same with kushina and mikoto.
I read a fanfic where Naruto was sent to the uchiha clan and they didn’t find out about 9 tails till the crush arc oh and they got to live to see the crush arc

I heard of the first two as being the ones who was supposed to raise Naruto. However, the Kakashi one is new to me. In fact, I heard the third one was supposed to be Yamato.
I believe that genuinely, there would be 2 families in specific naruto would do well in

But the 2 families I think he’d do best in, is honestly the nara’s and Teuchi
Shikaku has always shown that he didn’t HATE naruto, and encouraged shikamaru to be chill with naruto as well, and shikaku is just genuinely a good dad, he’d be a good dad to naruto as well imo, and imagine how cool the naruto - shikamaru - choji (and maybe ino) friendship could be if naruto straight up was raised with shikamaru
And Teuchi (along with his daughter) also never minded naruto, feeding him even if he couldn’t pay at times, they would be the perfect civilian family for naruto imo, and naruto could honestly have a sister, which would be cool

It's almost like the full story wasn't fleshed out from the start.
A good reveal could have been that Hiruzen had lost his parents early as well, leaving him to fend for himself. Reanimated Hiruzen could have apologized to Naruto, but said he truly believed a life on his own as a child of no one other than the village is what made him want to become Hokage. And he knew the moment he saw Naruto that he was destined to become the same.

A disguised Kakashi should have at least been assigned to keep a check on him and train him in some basic ninjutsu plus he had minetos sealing jutsu so he could have been helping his teachers orphan son about what he was and how to channel it, then as Naruto is assigned to team 7 he could slowly discover his connection to kakashi and then learn about his dad

I think people actually forget how young Kakashi is. When we first meet him he’s this God-Level character of ambiguous age(I originally thought he was late thirties because that was my mom’s age at the time I started watching Naruto), then you find out he’s a young 20s dude who was put in one bad situation after another with no time to catch his breath and a therapy dog who kicks him in the head and issues challenges to keep his mind of the Other Very Big Issues.

I think you’re misunderstanding the cultural differences in a godfather in America versus Asia. A Godparent in East Asia (assuming we aren’t talking about the catholic kind) is basically an uncle figure with no legal responsibility to the godchild. Jiraiya still should have taken responsibility for Naruto considering it is said he saw Minato as a son. But being a godfather in Asia typically does not mean a responsibility to take care of said child nor the legal right to do so unless you’re using the catholic version.
And Kakashi did play his part in Naruto's life.😢

I read somewhere that in Japanese culture the role of a godfather is pretty different to the western culture, not to mention that a "godparent" isn't really even a thing... the closest thing is a kari-oya (a godmother-like social parent) and its normally a woman, plus even if you look at it from the Story perspective Jiraiya was still doing "the work" set out to him by the Great toad sage ( traveling the world, writing books and looking for a student who he will mentor and who will either save the world or destroy it)
