Danny Seraphine was an absolute beast on the drum kit; "Make Me Smile" is a great bit of rhythm section perfection.

I love the way he slowly opens the hi-hat more and more when the tempo picks up right before he switches to the ride cymbal! One of the most underrated drummers of all time and rarely scratches the top 100 drummers list? Yet guy's like Ringo & Charly Watts do...

    • @bookhouseboy280

@@justjack0715 Danny's jazz-style is not as copy-friendly. His skill level is probably too high to be more appreciated. Most so-called top drummers lists seem to be popularity contests pandering to the fans to get more views/magazine sales. Lists compiled by mainstream media or "record company clowns" as Neil Young put it.

@@bookhouseboy280When Chicago was in their early years, there was a famous drummer who was particularly impressed by Danny Seraphine. That drummer was none other than Buddy Rich. If you can impress Buddy Rich with your drumming, you are definitely someone worth listening to!

Nothing can warm the heart like classic Chicago.
And the great part is it isn't only one songwriter/vocalist who can bring it. This is Peter Cetera (bass), but Robert Lamm (keyboards) does just as well on "Saturday in the Park" and ditto for Terry Kath (guitar) on "Make Me Smile". And the horn section does wonderful on the accents (James Pankow's trumpet, especially) and Danny Seraphine ties it all together on the drums. Exquisite!
    Thanks so much.

Lee Loughnane plays trumpet while Jimmy Pankow is the trombone player and Walt Parazaider plays the sax.

@@Jimbodisfan Indeed. When I was a youngster, I remember saying Man, Chicago makes horns ROCK!! I still feel this 50 years later. Love their broad spectrum of talent and styles. Never disappoints.

Each member of this group is a master at their craft. Peter Cetera's very distinctive vocals are on this song. Terry Kath is considered among the all time greatest guitarist, Danny's drumming is phenomenal, The horns are the unmistakable signature sound. Growing out of several bands from the Chicago area in the late 1960s, the line-up consisted of Peter Cetera on bass, Terry Kath on guitar, Robert Lamm on keyboards, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone, Walter Parazaider on woodwinds, and Danny Seraphine on drums. Cetera, Kath, and Lamm shared lead vocal duties

Chicago is one of my favorite bands. They are the iconic American band. Their sound, particularly in the early part of their career is so recognizable. They have so many hits. I hope you do many more of their amazing songs.

If long term success is any measure of how good a band is,, well....To date, Chicago has sold over 40 million units in the U.S., with 23 gold, 18 platinum, and eight multi-platinum albums. They have had five consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200 and 20 top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1974 the group had seven albums, its entire catalog at the time, on the Billboard 200 simultaneously. Few other groups can boast similar numbers.

Not really one of my favorite Chicago songs. But that's a matter of taste. For me, Chicago's first two albums are the benchmark. There wasn't a bad song on there (okay, "Free Form Guitar" was a bit strange). After that it became more “mixed goods” and more pop-oriented.
