    This was written by Robert Lamm, who is a keyboard player and singer for Chicago. It's about trying to write a song, with the title referring to the time of day: either 3:35 a.m. (25 to 4) or 3:34 a.m. (26 to 4). Lamm explained on The Chris Isaak Hour: "I was living with a bunch of hippies up above Sunset Strip. One of the advantages of this particular house was that it was in the Hollywood Hills and I could look out over the city late at night. I wanted to try to describe the process of writing the song that I was writing. So, 'waiting for the break of day, searching for something to say, flashing lights against the sky' - there was a neon sign across the city. That song came from the fact that it was 25 or 6 to 4 a.m. in the morning when I looked at my watch - I was looking for a line to finish the chorus.

    Jimi Hendrix met Chicago at a club in Hollywood “The Whiskey”. Hendrix said the horns sound like they come from one set of lungs, AND Terry Kath is a better guitar player than he was. Jimi took them on tour to open for him and said he was ‘Intimidated” having to follow Terry Kath on stage.

    Chicago is an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967. The group began calling itself the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968, then shortened the name in 1969. Self-described as a "rock and roll band with horns", Chicago was much influenced by jazz in its early years, and its songs often also combine elements of classical music, R&B, and pop music.
    Growing out of several bands from the Chicago area in the late 1960s, the line-up consisted of Peter Cetera on bass, Terry Kath on guitar, Robert Lamm on keyboards, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone, Walter Parazaider on woodwinds, and Danny Seraphine on drums. Cetera,(this song) Kath, and Lamm shared lead vocal duties

      Close but Terry Kath's daughter was his only child. I read that he was sitting on a couch with Danny Seraphine when he died. His daughter does a memorial to Terry on YT as she barely remembered him and it was her way to keep his memory alive. czcams.com/video/f7egJTtz10E/video.html

    This is a great band...I'm a big fan. This band has an interesting history. They have two distinctly different sounds. Sadly, we lost Terry Kath the lead guitarist and vocals in 1978 to an unintentional self-inflicted gunshot wound. Peter Cetera was the lead singer and bassist. They band went on to be successful but when Terry went home he took his "fairy dust" with him. RIP: Terry Kath💔🔥🎸U R Missed

    There are two distinct eras of Chicago, with Terry Kath on guitar from 1967-1978, and everything else since. With Kath, they were a kick-ass rock band with horns. After Terry Kath died, they became a pop ballads band.
    Go get their debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority and play it from start to finish. Their first three albums were all double LPs, unheard of for ANY band.
    On that first album there are two tracks in particular to play among all that great music. The first is the appropriately titled opening track "Introduction", written by guitarist Terry Kath, who also sings lead with his soulful baritone voice.
    The second track to play is "Poem 58". It's nine minutes of PURE FUNK, led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will blow you away!
    Jimi Hendrix saw them play at the Whiskey in LA, went up to them, and told them, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than me! You wanna go on the road?" And he hired Chicago to be his opening act on a national tour of arenas.
    POEM 58! Trust me on this!

    So glad you enjoyed my hometown band. I actually grew up in the same Dunning neighborhood of Chicago as Danny Seraphine the drummer. I saw them in concert twice, with and without Terry Kath and Peter Cetera, back in the early 70's at the Chicago Stadium and again in 1992 on a double bill with The Moody Blues". They were both great concerts. I would like to recommend "Colour My World" which is one of my all time favorites. I haven't seen anyone react to it, so you can be the first.

    How many bands have a double album for their debut? How many rookie bands would be allowed to? I’d put on side 1 of their first album, ‘Chicago Transit Authority’, song 1 “Introduction”, by the late great Terry Kath, amazing guitarist, soul singer, and composer, and let it play. You really can’t go wrong with their first few albums. You’ll also for sure want to check out this song live at Tanglewood. It’s amazing, and you can see what they look like playing. Thanks!

    I know I'm only 5 months removed from this reaction. But I need those who read this to know that the piano player Robert Lamm wrote the lyrics to this song. It was surmised that it was a take on him being high off of LSD. Thus the line that says: "Should I Try To Do Some More?" He was having a high drug trip and the clock on the wall was doing some tricks on his eyes. He could not tell if it was 25 minutes or 26 minutes to 4am in the morning! I guess it's true that some group's greatest hits are done when they are loaded, huh?

  • @AliasMark69
    @AliasMark69 Před rokem +1

    Robert Lamm wrote the song and claims it is about trying to write more lyrics at 25 minutes to 4 am. Urban Legend says it is about the group taking hits of LSD/Acid and sitting cross legged on the floor, wondering if they should take more, the question was asked...'What Time Is It?.....at 25 or 6 to 4. Believe what you want, there were reasons not to want the general public to know the truth... so....
