      If you hold your phone in your hand(even if it's not on) like you are recording, I find you don't have to say a word to them and they run away. If they press the issue try and get a car reg and ask if they have buisness insurance! The last straw for me was when I went to see my sister (who had 4 children under 6 at the time), and as I walked in a guy was standing in her living room playing with her tv. I asked who he was and if he was CRB checked as she was a vulnerable adult(which they aren't). The guy told to mind my own buisness! Lets just say he was gone and the door closed about 20 seconds after his comment! They are just parasites who prey on the elderly, vulnerable and naive to get their commission. Oh and isn't it strange how the cold calling laws don't seem to apply to them!

      I agree, sadly though some people are bullied into getting a licence they don’t need. I issued them a pre warning, that in case of any more correspondence I would issue a “cease and desist” notice. I said I don’t recognise the 2 year no licence needed declaration period as it is not mentioned in the 2003 Communications Act. Since that I’ve had nothing. But if the letters do commence again, they will receive the notice, if they breach that, legal action will follow.

      Completing a no licence needed form gives them tacit permission to visit your property to ”confirm that you don’t need a licence”. I disagreed with that so couldn’t fill out the form. They will contact you after 2 years to reconfirm.

      @@gemqueen1866 Yes I agree you don’t have to let them in. But the NLN declaration forces you to unnecessarily agree to something. As I don’t need a licence, nothing is needed. In the case of a visit, I would simply say no thank you and close the door. In the event of a search warrant I would either not answer the door, as it should be obvious the police are in attendance, or if I inadvertently answer the door, instruct the police to say nothing, start the camera recording, let them in and as soon as they issue the words “you have the right to remain silent......” request a solicitor, then say nothing, sign nothing, don’t give them your name, and instruct the police not to assist them. Following the visit, I would be requesting the evidence collected that supported the search warrant investigation and pursuing a charge of misleading the court and fabricating evidence to obtain a search warrant. In the event they try to make a malicious obstruction charge, I would fight it in court. Bullies should never be allowed to win.

    I stopped having a licence a few years ago. They simply don’t produce enough programming that I would want to watch. As an Englishman, I was shocked that Welsh and Scots got top line Rugby included in the licence fee, but for the English a Sky Sports subscription (BT do a bit now) for the English Premiership was required. It seemed a bit unfair, seeing as most of the licence fee is collected from England, so I complained. The lack of response lead me to cut the aerial and free myself from at last count £1,200 of licence fees. I haven’t looked back. Netflix and Amazon Prime have filled the entertainment gap, and the few times I saw BBC News when in hotels, I was shocked at how distorted the coverage or lack thereof was.

    • @johnshellard6201
      @johnshellard6201 Před 3 lety

      The Welsh rugby coverage is poor. We only get one pro 14 game on S4C. It’s all in Welsh but they do English commentary in game but is dire. The pro 14 is on premier sports and has been for a few years. Think it’s £10 a month and it’s like a pound shop sky sports and then you have to watch the pro 14!

    • @fatbikemontage2931
      @fatbikemontage2931 Před 3 lety +1

      @@johnshellard6201 I think that is fairly recent. At the time I complained, BBC Wales showed top flight Welsh and Pro 14 (whatever it was called back then) rugby on a regular basis, I did watch some of that. As did the BBC Scotland channel for their games. There is no BBC England, which is a statement all of its own. Looking at the schedules for BBC, I can see they showed Wales vs Ireland, but England vs Scotland was on ITV, which gets none of the licence fee. The BBC takes the largest share of its licence fee income from England, and then doesn’t deliver the English sport to those viewers. Whereas Scotland and Wales get bespoke channels and much more of their sport.

    When I cancelled my licence, I did it this way: I first cancelled the direct debit. Then I got a letter from TV Licensing saying that they had noted that I'd cancelled the DD and I should cancel the licence online. This I did and I received an email telling me I was entitled to a refund and this would go into my bank account in the next few days, which it did. There was something on the email, I didn't understand, so I phoned them up and spoke to a woman, told her I no longer wanted or needed a licence and she confirmed my entitlement to a refund of about £40. I then got a letter to tell me that I'd cancelled my DD and that they hadn't heard from me and that I'd need to make arrangements to pay for my next TV licence!!! Three days later they sent me another letter telling me I was entitled to a refund (which they'd already paid). Since then, I have received three letters each saying more or less the same thing, which is that my licence has expired and that I need to get another or I'm risking prosecution etc etc and that I can expect a visit from an enforcement officer. These letters also say something to the effect that 'Despite previous attempts to contact you about your licence'. This is stupid, because I have done all I need to do and have even spoken to them. They don't seem to follow any set procedure and their responses are both confusing and contradictory. I have had no two year period of grace, it seems. I'm impervious to threats or visits from these people as I am completely within the law and so have nothing to fear.

      ITV and other independent stations should join in with the Defund the BBC campaign. The reason being, if hundreds of thousands of people are genuinely cancelling their TV licence and are no longer watching terrestrial TV then these stations will also miss out on a lot of viewers, which could affect their sponsorships/advertising causing them to lose at lot of money, which in turn may stop them being competitive with Netflix etc and could eventually cause their demise

    Dear Jon (?) - you're one of the more reasonable youtubers around - and as such should be aplauded. I go back to the days (almost) of "2LO" - ask your great grandfather - when the BeeB was to be respected for what they did (no competition, no TV only Radio Luxembourg and some despicable types moored off Sarfend in a rowing boat... Now it's so much more complicated - quite beyond 'do you watch TV'.
    the BeeB does (or did) so much more than just push out programmes for all and sundry, but tried to broadcast quality material without having to worry about too much public opinion. Some dross disappeared, but the good stuff stood the test of time.
    If YOU persuade folks to dump the fee - the result wiil be / IS that programmes will descend to the quality of what's on the subscription channels.
    Occasionally folks enjoy reruns of what BBC used to do - without that it descend into the carp that is U.S. Tv and that's a fate worse then death.
    .
    .
    What is needed is mebe a more sensible pricing structure with a balance betweer nil and £157. Coupled with that a better management structure...

I said oh, don't worry about that it will only be a couple of pounds and she said it's likely to be more than that. A week later I got the letter confirming no license needed for two years and the week after that a cheque came for £78. I was well chuffed. He identified himself with his ID and asked if he could check my TV equipment. I said yeah sure and let him in without hesitation. I think that actually threw him a little as he was rather surprised I didn't argue.
    I demonstrated to him that I had no BBC apps like iPlayer as I'd had them all removed from my smart TV, I proved my aerial didn't work and that was that.
    He seemed genuinely impressed that I was telling the truth and asked how I removed the BBC software and apps from my TV? I said a friend of mine is a computer scientist and he did it for me, which is true, I wasn't lying.
    He said he thought that it was impossible to do that as the apps were part of the base Android TV system, I said they are but all evidence to the contrary. He made a note on his iPad, said he'd close the case out and that was that.
    Before leaving however, he did ask me if I would consider buying a TV licence in the future. I said no, because I work each day and when I come home from work I prefer to watch Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus and CZcams as they are not biased like the BBC.
    I added that in my view the BBC is too muh of a leftie organsation which only employs public school educated twats or Oxford and Cambridge University graduates who can't obtain a job involving real work.
    He didn't say anything to that and simply left.

It seems to me that by declaring you don't need their licence is tantamount to inviting TVL round to your home for confirmation. Overall you're no better off for cooperating with TVL rather than just ignoring them.

      The assumption the BBC make is that all houses in the UK need a licence unless you tell them otherwise. I guess with the decline in people having a licence, eventually they will ditch this method of funding and try to move to a household levy or tax. I would be ok with a much reduced licence fee for Public Service Broadcasting, but sadly the BBC think the licence fee gives them latitude to give multi million pound wages to “talent” and generally waste money that a private company never could. Barring some excellent Natural History programs, and from memory programmes like “Click” what they provide for £160 per year is surprisingly little. Even less when repeats are taken out.
