Can you think of a more fitting film to win Best Sound at the Oscars than Sound of Metal? Because there isn't one!

The first act of this movie is terrifying.
I’d never think of how scary it would be to wake up one day and lose your sense of hearing

Just in case someone reads this, if his ever happens to you, go to the Emergency department immediately. It will save your hearing or at least the majority of it. I work in this field myself and it was weird no one said that! (would've made a great PSA)
Not many things cause permanent sudden loss (usually its temporary like a big plug of wax or an infection/dip in hearing due to Meniere's etc...)
But with the type that can become permanent, it can be caused by inflammation of the structures/viruses which in the most part can be treated quickly and successfully with steroids
if left without, I'd say it will take 3 or 4 days for it to become irreversible.
In terms of noise exposure, it takes years for it to harm your hearing, even then it's not the type of almost complete silence he has, it will just make things muffled.
I don't even think I've ever heard of burst eardrums giving you a loss to the level where you hear literally nothing like him. I have so many questions about the cause of what he had!
      Sorry to nerd out

Happened to me somewhat. I had a really bad ear infection it caused the hearing in my left ear to completely dull out. While I could still hear in my other ear, it was still very scary to lose my hearing in one ear. It eventually came back. But still. It really messes with you even if you can't hear out of one ear. I can't imagine what it would be like to completely lose your hearing. Losing it in one ear was scary enough.

I know this is meant to be a sad scene, but there is something kind of funny about how the doctor is trying to be direct about the state of Ruben's hearing loss, but Ruben is not catching onto the fact that his deafness is permanent ("How do I get it back"), and the doctor finally becomes uncompromisingly forthright ("The hearing you have lost is NOT coming back")

if anyone out there has experienced any hearing loss, this should shock you. it's true. I am missing 40% in one ear at this point. unless you want to take up sign language, this should be a real wake up call to all. the interesting thing is some of this is gradual so if that is the case, there's still time to get it fixed.
