I saw disappointment but also sadness in his reaction. He really cares about Ruben and he wanted him to stay. His face expression is something you don't see in many actor's no matter how big they are. You could see he was crying without seing tears.
The most interesting part of this scene, is that if this was another film these two characters would be shouting each other heads off. Instead, they are calm because they both want to understand each other. So heartbreaking and so realistic.
@@janno5147true, but that’s what makes the scene so powerful for me: what they have left to communicate are their faces, and they say so much more than just the words they sign
Lots of people seem to not get this scene. It's not simply that Joe is disappointed in Ruben's choice. His concern is that Ruben is acting like an addict. An addict can't find peace in being still and just inside their own body. At this stage, Ruben is trying to fill the hole in his life by chasing something impossible and fleeting. He will never be able to hear, in the same way that drugs will never satisfy. Ruben is willing to risk losing everything (specifically selling his rv, which he describes as his home) in order to chase some impossible vision of peace. This has parallels with an addict selling something precious to them or someone they love just for their next fix. The reason Joe has to ask him to leave is that he is acting like an addict, not because he had the surgery. Joe asked Ruben to sit in his study every morning to help him find peace in the silence. As someone who has struggled with addiction for a long time in various forms, this is one of the hardest things to do. Just sitting and being can feel agonising. I can't imagine what it must be like to be an addict who can't hear - to only have the sounds of your thoughts and your body and no other distractions. As Joe says, he is protecting the children from thinking that they can "fix" being deaf, and from thinking that being deaf is a flaw that should be corrected. Disabilities can carry with them a lot of shame, and to have a person living in a deaf community whilst doing everything they possibly can to not be deaf is definitely not ideal. But I think ultimately the reason Joe asked Ruben to leave was because Ruben was relapsing into an addict mentality. It was clearly an excruciatingly difficult decision for Joe, but ultimately, I think, a brave and powerful one. At the end of the film, Ruben finally finds something like peace in the silence of just being, even if it's only for a moment.
I don't think Joe asked Ruben to leave because he was acting like an addict. The whole community was for deaf addicts, no? I thought the reason they were isolated from the rest of the world was to stop them from communicating with old "contacts", people who would try to persuade them to return to their old lifestyle etc. (which is kind of exactly what happened with Ruben when he snuck into Joe's office). Joe asked Ruben to leave because having someone in the community, who treats deafness as a disability and something that needs to be "fixed", will damage the cohesive structure of the community. They have found peace and acceptance in being deaf and Ruben, who refuses to accept his new life, will hurt the people who related to him and trusted him. The other folks would start to feel like there is something wrong or broken about them, too. Joe needed to keep his community strong and safe.
The first part of your statement I agree with. Joe is afraid for Ruben because his behavior parallels that of an addict, chasing a fix that can never give him the peace he needs. But he DID ask him to leave because he got the surgery. Because besides the fact that Joe is afraid for Ruben, he is also disappointed in him for getting the surgery. because the whole idea that Deafness needs to be fixed is offensive to him and all the other deaf people that live there. He has built his home on the foundation that addiction needs to be fixed not deafness and compromising on that foundation by allowing someone who "fixed" their deafness to live there threatens the sobriety of everyone else that lives there. This scene is so good because there is so much going on at once and there are so many emotional layers. This whole movie is a total master class.
@@Jah_LEASE_yah i dont quite agree that Ruben getting the surgery was offensive to joe i think joe loves Ruben and really wishes that his choice gives him happiness i think its just really about protecting the system they have built because it really is life and death and he cant afford for the emotional safety of all these addicts and kids to be compromised. i mean from the first scene we meet joe we know he does not make compromises and has strict principles because what he has built works in a world where lots of things dont work at all. now reading back ur paragraph i realise your saying exactly this lol mb. all I'm saying is that i dont think joe asks Ruben to leave because of any offense he took because Ruben's decision is in no way selfish or offensive to other deaf people i think its just strictly the fact it compromises joes system.

The fact Joe's character doesn't get the closure and he doesn't get the happy ending is just another reason why this film is incredible. I love the addict line because it's multi-layered. He's not just addicted to hearing, he's addicted to his girlfriend, the RV, the music, the life he had.
That stillness he’s talking about is achieved through meditation. Simply sitting with yourself and focusing on your breath, or the surrounding sounds and eventually it will come to you. Whenever you find yourself disappearing into your thoughts, refocus on your breath or the sounds. Try at least ten mins per day. One day something indescribable will start happening. Changed my life. ‘You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.’ Franz Kafka
It is absolutely astounding what as little as 10 mins a day can do. The way Joe is describing it, you can see in his face and his gestures that it's as if he's thinking about an old, beloved friend. A friend that will never abandon you.
For me this is the best scene from the whole movie. It has so much depth. He was trying to teach him to be in peace and be present, by being still inside, what he calls "the kingdom of God". If you like this I would recommend the book The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle.
personally I admire Ruben's character that he did not give up and tried to do all he could in his situation to get his life back. I was a bit dissapointed with Joe's response... anyway that's really great and powerful scene..
Yea I agree. He had to try otherwise he would’ve lived wondering - what if? You’d have thought Joe would understand this. Maybe he knew Ruben would eventually come back.
I agree that Joe's response was harsh. But I understand where he's coming from - the community is based on learning to live with your deafness because their philosphy is that it is not a handicap. It's just something different to navigate. Therefore, Joe can only prioritize people in the communal setting who acknowledge that way of living and don't try to change that. For him, it's a breach of trust. With that being said, I don't think Joe realizes the gravity of Ruben's situation - the fact that his whole career and aspirations revolve around hearing and playing music. So it's definitely more nuanced than one thinks. Although, we see in the end that even Ruben is having a difficult time dealing with his implants, so he removes them at the end to feel a sense of stillness and silence. Great and powerful stuff.
I saw it last week on Prime and then I've just watched it tonight in the cinema...wearing my earplugs and the second time round, it hit me really hard...Initially when they're on the slide and he and the little boy start banging it like a drum
“If I disappear, who cares? Nobody cares, man seriously. Yo, that’s okay. That’s life. Okay?” Hits deep but everyone should know, there’s always someone who cares.
I lost hearing in my right ear and instead of stillness there is screaming tinnitus. I can "hear" what a "quiet" room sounds like in my left ear, but if I lose hearing in my left in the same manner, there will be nothing but loudness. I detest experiencing deafness and if a proper cure (as opposed to a bypass such as a CI) is discovered in my lifetime I will jump at it. I do not understand deaf people who say they live as full a life as hearing people. If it was, why would they have to live in a seperate commune with each-other? My life without any hearing would be a lesser experience. It already is with a partial impairment.
I am girl who have tinnitus since 2016 and it’s getting worst every year that makes me fucking scared of everything even from having love and children and getting stable job :(
What you need to understand is that not all deaf people live in a community like this. A lot have adapted well in their own way to a life in the hearing community, and are as happy as they can be.
The art that inflicts here depicts how an act that is really beneath the surface of the parts of life revolves around us best one's to be said Riz Paul raci whole team ❤️
@@RizwanAhmed-cc7cd Hello! Sorry to respond late. Well this scene makes me cry because I feel like they both are right. If Ruben didn't do the surgery he would probably regret it for the rest of his life. You know what I mean? Some part of him didn't accept his new reality. But Joe is sad and disappointed because he tried to show Ruben another way of life, a way to be happy in his new reality but Ruben didn't understood it. Sorry for my english, it's my second language. But anyways, Riz Ahmed is my favorite actor since "The Night of" and "Sound of Metal" is a masterpiece.
I wear a cochlear implant and its the best thing I've done. It's opened up so many paths for me to take. Saying that I do like to spend time on the weekends without the hearing aids and just relax in the silence. Its a unique experience that hearing people will never have the opportunity to experience. Like this scene says, "Theres peace in the silence"
Thanks for the comment! Not the same thing but I have had tinnitus since I was a kid and man sometimes I honestly wish I could just experience pure silence, it really drives me insane sometimes especially late at night when it's quiet. I pretty much have something playing 24/7 just to mask the ringing, I can't sleep without headphones on. When I watched this film and he took out the aid and it was just silence, man I really felt that. Even tho I can hear, I really relate to wanting to appreciate silence too.
@Quzga I have tinnitus too, my particularly bad episodes last for weeks non-stop. What helps me is playing video games, it takes my concentration off the tinnitus and most times the tinnitus disappears
@@jamesmcdaid1260 haha yea I pretty much have headphones 24/7 or play a lot of games as well! The worst is when you notice it in bed and then you can't stop hearing it..
I can’t blame Joe. He gave Ruben shelter, a community, and a helping hand during a time of personal crisis. Ruben took advantage of his hospitality, went behind his back, and basically gave the finger to his community. Selfish, ungrateful behavior.
wanting to hear again and knowing there's something out there that can make that happen is selfish? sounds pretty fucking stupid to me. these people here aren't handicapped blah blah, well yeah the inability to hear puts you at a disadvantage which is handicapping yourself, why wouldn't you want to gain that ability back. I get why he couldn't stay there and make the other kids feel like shit, just I dunno. Joe is a little too rightious for me, it'd be the same as saying anne frank was perfect the way she was dumb deaf n blind n didn't need to change herself for no man. well that's pretty handicapped in general and if given the chance i think i'll take my sight and hearing back over pride.
I don’t think I could survive losing my hearing like that. I have relied on my hearing way too much. It’s how I’ve survived. I don’t think I could even sleep. I would go mad in complete silence.
Being in the characters Joe's position, you know how painful this decision and conversation stung. In a sense Joe failed Ruben even though Ruben showed great progress and even connected with other people on a deeper level. Joe had to let go of a friend that didn't want to be helped anymore.
I was born profoundly deaf and wore hearing aids since I was 2 years old. I was rejected by the Deaf society cos I preferred speech over sign language. I'm 32 years old now and I never resented the fact I was rejected by the Deaf culture. My belief is deafness IS a handicap, cos no one chose to be deaf. Deafness is a barrier to spoken language which is intrinsic to human society, its how hearing people form relationships and communities/culture etc. Since Deaf people are understandably disadvantaged in hearing cultures, they naturally formed their own with their own ideals, communities and identities. The worst thing about Deaf culture is their own "class" system where culturally Deaf people think themselves superior to other deaf people that opted for hearing aids/implants and isolate them from their groups. My opinion of the people that consider themselves culturally Deaf have just given up, they'd rather isolate themselves within each other than face the struggles and rejections throughout hearing society. The Deaf society was supposed to be an organisation that helps people with any level of hearing loss and helps them seek treatment and management. Instead it has become a exclusive society riddled with purist ideologies that somehow makes hearing aid/cochlear users inferior to them.
Why almost all the you guys just talking about paul raci sir🥲 why no one is talking about riz Ahmed’s performance he is too incredibly good in the seen😕🥺
I don't understand why he considered the implant wrong. As science advances, you could get perfect hearing with those implants, not to talk about enhancing like in cyberpunk
it’s not wrong, but like he said in this scene, their community didn’t look at being deaf as something to fix or a disability, but rather just a different way of living. implants are great but they can be very costly which a lot of people can’t afford. in the movie ruben had learned so much from the deaf community and they had been very welcoming and accommodating to him, so the fact that he got the implants was almost like a slap in the face to them
This is the only thing that doesn't sit right for me in the movie. It's like the body acceptance thing when you're obese. It's a cope. Yes, you're disable. To the point that you're shutting yourself out of the outside world cause you can't function in it, to the point that you make deaf kids only live and play with deaf kids. Yes, you're disable and you can fix it, the rest is hippy cultish bullshit. I have a brother with implants. He graduated this year, he doesn't know sign language, you can talk to him, he can speak, he drives, plays his videogames. He's just a normal kid. But I'm italian and we literally didn't have to spend a cent on the implants. And that's the real problem. Not closing yourself off at the margin of society and calling it healing
@@guitourney I'm also curious, is your brother able to hear well or just like Ruben in the movie, the sound is distorted to the point where it's unbearable. I've seen videos on youtube with implants and a girl is hearing identical to normal hearing.
He hears well. He can function normally. Now what he hears, I don't know. I mean I don't know what you hear or how you see colors as well. But I know it's at a standard where it's almost indistinguishable from the real thing
@J B indistinguishable because for all intents and purposes, it allows my brother to live like an hearing person. I dont know exactly how he perceives sound, but I know that he is not living in a nightmareish soundscape since he's always fine and can comprehend exactly whatever s going on around him
Such a sad, sad scene. Like, I understand Joe's hurt and feeling of absolute betrayal by Ruben, but Ruben feels like he was robbed of something. And wanted to get it back.
If Rueben needs money to buy his van back, why sell it in the first place? Wouldn't it make more sense to ask Joe for money to pay for the surgery instead?
They would’ve straight up refused to give him money for surgery as it’s against their rules. He probably thought once he paid for the surgery himself then at least he’d have some chance of getting money back from Joe purely out of sympathy
this is addiction. it's really fucking hard to say no when a loved one dealing with addiction requests something out of you in this way. you can clearly see that joe has been through this before, it still affects him but he thinks of the people that rely on him to be strong and that gives him the power to refuse

I'm glad you uploaded this scene. I just watched this movie last night, and this was my favourite scene. Made me tear up.
This is the scene the whole film builds up to tbh, definitely the stand out moment
This film is a true masterpiece. From overcoming what we believe to be true - to accepting our reality for what it really is. Incredible.
For me this is the best scene from the whole movie. It has so much depth. He was trying to teach him to be in peace and be present, by being still inside, what he calls "the kingdom of God". If you like this I would recommend the book The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle.
I want to think he went back to Joe and the community after the credits roll...and that Joe took him back ❤🖤💜
Joe wouldn't take him back, he still has the implant even if he chooses not to use it.
personally I admire Ruben's character that he did not give up and tried to do all he could in his situation to get his life back.
I was a bit dissapointed with Joe's response...
anyway that's really great and powerful scene..
Yea I agree. He had to try otherwise he would’ve lived wondering - what if? You’d have thought Joe would understand this. Maybe he knew Ruben would eventually come back.
Yeah as a musician myself I wouldnt give up that fast to my job and loved art. Joe could try to understand that he was a drummer with dreams
I agree it felt a bit controlling on joes part
There was so much to admire in this film and Paul Raci’s performance was my highlight.
Thanks for uploading this. The scene speaks for itself
One of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking scene I've seen in a long time. So well written and interpreted
Wow - really nice work by Riz and Raci. Powerful scene - perfectly acted. Good stuff.
this movie moved me in such a way i cannot explain
This scene is fantastic the mimic of the actors, the silent times their looks...... Pretty intense
My favorite scene of any film from 2020
Amazing acting!
Very powerful scene. In an average year, both these men would've walked away with oscars.
I probably have never seen such an great acting before, it's incredible
What a movie! This is what i call a movie. Which lingers around your head even after watching it.
I saw it last week on Prime and then I've just watched it tonight in the cinema...wearing my earplugs and the second time round, it hit me really hard...Initially when they're on the slide and he and the little boy start banging it like a drum
My God they both deserved to have won oscars for this scene alone. Shame on the academy.
“If I disappear, who cares? Nobody cares, man seriously. Yo, that’s okay. That’s life. Okay?”
Hits deep but everyone should know, there’s always someone who cares.
Ruben, how about a thanks man !
paul raci is awesome in this just impeccable acting
I've had tinnitus my whole life and I thought everyone heard ringing when it's quiet until I was 17 lol. Quite used to it
I had tinnitus since I was 15 😢
Masterpiece.
Would be so so cool if Riz and Paul actually win this year for best actor and best supporting actor. But sadly not happening 😢😢.
Riz absolutely deserves it but I feel like they’re gonna give it to Chadwick since he passed away
Syed izaan 💯🎯💜
This is such a good movie, I'm sad that more people don't know about it
Best scene of the film and paul did this mostly
This scene shows us that every choice made will have consequences, be it good or bad.
I don't understand why opting for a cochlear implant should be considered a "bad" choice
Making choices battling life ❤️
Very emotional scene,Paul Raci alone made me cry 😢 😭 💔 😪 😞 😔 👍‼️
The art that inflicts here depicts how an act that is really beneath the surface of the parts of life revolves around us best one's to be said Riz Paul raci whole team ❤️
How they both didn’t win the Oscar that year is mind blowing
This scene always makes me cry 🥺
Aurelia joy, why you crying over the scene?
I know is gonna be the silence?
Love it because it raises the question How to know when you have to let it go? Best scene ever ❤️
Just an incredible scene. Bets film of 2020-21 so far by a mile. Riz and Paul deserve the accolades they have worked hard for in this film.
Paul Raci. Holy shit!
Such a heartbreaking scene.......
I feel so fucking bad for Joe.
dialogue means something else when you have learnt about spirituality.

I don’t think I could survive losing my hearing like that. I have relied on my hearing way too much. It’s how I’ve survived. I don’t think I could even sleep. I would go mad in complete silence.
Paul Raci was awesome in this
So, who thinks Ruben returned to him as the prodigal son?
Real real.
this movie is very fkin good
His voice hear like Vaas Montenegro

❤race,|
it's just so good. it's so goddamn real.
A lot of people say the implants don't sound that bad
Bro got fallout 1nd

im gonna disappear soon^^ finally found peace
Estas bien?
Are you Okey Sébastian?
I love Tiktok
bruno fernandes after left Man United 😖💔
I dont know exactly how he perceives sound, but I know that he is not living in a nightmareish soundscape since he's always fine and can comprehend exactly whatever s going on around him
Bladee
Such a sad, sad scene. Like, I understand Joe's hurt and feeling of absolute betrayal by Ruben, but Ruben feels like he was robbed of something. And wanted to get it back.
birdman???
:(
The most interesting thing about this video... is that I haven't watched the movie yet, so thank you for the spoiling video title I guess ? 😑
Is this scene a One take shot?
Nop
YOUTH OF TODAY
Which one of them is deaf?
Both
If Rueben needs money to buy his van back, why sell it in the first place? Wouldn't it make more sense to ask Joe for money to pay for the surgery instead?
Because he is a dork! He expected not only money but to also stay at the “hotel” for 4 more weeks, this scene was kind of satisfying.
@@millsromeBeautifully said 👌🏽
Is this a true story?
