My daughter is deaf, she does have cochlear implants but it’s not a quick fix. She is still deaf, she knows a lot of sign language, she is taking ASL as a foreign language next year, she is also in percussion. We embrace the deaf culture but also the hearing world so she can have opportunity. We hate the term “disability” but sometimes have to use the term in order for her to get her accommodations.

@@rcala1980maybe music has become your escape from pain brother. The feelings of horror might be speaking to your soul. As for myself, I wept and was angered by this movie from the layers of discomfort I felt, fear of something that could happen to me in the future, and full circle peace in the very last scene that I couldnt accept. Idk it just put a frog in my throat because this movie hit me in my mental weak spots. I felt like my primal fears were displayed and played in front of me by the film. I hated this movie for a while but, 2 years later, it has come to be one of the most memorable and impactful pieces of art I’ve seen this far. “Discovering stillness” Is exactly what I took away from this film. I’m at a point in my life where I had to delete all my social media and basically disconnect from all social circles to gain a sense of peace back. Well he sold also sold his stereo system his drums and other stuff. So I think he got the right amount of money to pay for the surgery. But that's not really the point. The thing his he got the implants just recently and the brain needs a lot of time to learn to process this drastic change. He thought that his hearing would be straight like it was or somewhat close to it. So the disappointment he felt when he first heard the doctor talk was so much worse even more so when you realise he couldn't possibly get back to doing music and having his life back with Lou like they used to.

But right after that he starts talking about he getting back with her (Lou) on the road and she starts scratching her arm at the thought like a junkie and he decides they're both better off not together. I guess I'll go ahead and be the one to complain. The movie was indeed emotionally compelling and well-acted, but...I couldn't stand the fact that Ruben, once deaf to the point that he couldn't hear people speaking, could still speak in a perfectly normal tone himself. Seriously, what's up with that? Couldn't the actor do some research/listen to how deaf people speak? It's very pitchy. It would've made his performance feel like real life if he had lost that to some degree at least. He literally spoke the same as always. It irritated me to the point that it distracted me from enjoying the good aspects of the film.

Umm...Reuben has been hearing his entire life up to this point. He learned to speak normally as a child a received language normally as a child, so of course his voice is normal. Him losing his hearing later in life won’t change that. Deaf people who are born deaf or lose their hearing at a very young age, usually before the age of 2 or 3, which is when children learn to develop language skills and are receptive to language, will have a deaf ‘accent’ because they were not old enough to learn formal speech. Reuben is a hearing adult, his speech isn’t just going to alter itself or disappear because he lost his hearing later in life. He already developed language skills in infancy, just as all hearing children do. My father was born hearing, had encephalitis at 18 months and lost his hearing. 18 months of age is not old enough to have developed language skills, so he has an accent. This is just common sense. Honestly, sometimes I wish people would just pick up a book or something.

Ruben had just lost his hearing, that doesn’t mean that he would’ve lost the ability to speak. Many Deaf people over time lose the ability to speak “correctly” which is why they don’t sound as “normal” to hearing people. Before he learned ASL in the movie, his voice was his main source of communication. I didn’t see anything wrong with that.
