    Being in the characters Joe's position, you know how painful this decision and conversation stung. In a sense Joe failed Ruben even though Ruben showed great progress and even connected with other people on a deeper level. Joe had to let go of a friend that didn't want to be helped anymore.

    That stillness he’s talking about is achieved through meditation. Simply sitting with yourself and focusing on your breath, or the surrounding sounds and eventually it will come to you. Whenever you find yourself disappearing into your thoughts, refocus on your breath or the sounds. Try at least ten mins per day. One day something indescribable will start happening. Changed my life. ‘You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.’ Franz Kafka

      It is absolutely astounding what as little as 10 mins a day can do. The way Joe is describing it, you can see in his face and his gestures that it's as if he's thinking about an old, beloved friend. A friend that will never abandon you.

    I was born profoundly deaf and wore hearing aids since I was 2 years old. I was rejected by the Deaf society cos I preferred speech over sign language. I'm 32 years old now and I never resented the fact I was rejected by the Deaf culture. My belief is deafness IS a handicap, cos no one chose to be deaf. Deafness is a barrier to spoken language which is intrinsic to human society, its how hearing people form relationships and communities/culture etc. Since Deaf people are understandably disadvantaged in hearing cultures, they naturally formed their own with their own ideals, communities and identities. The worst thing about Deaf culture is their own "class" system where culturally Deaf people think themselves superior to other deaf people that opted for hearing aids/implants and isolate them from their groups. My opinion of the people that consider themselves culturally Deaf have just given up, they'd rather isolate themselves within each other than face the struggles and rejections throughout hearing society. The Deaf society was supposed to be an organisation that helps people with any level of hearing loss and helps them seek treatment and management. Instead it has become a exclusive society riddled with purist ideologies that somehow makes hearing aid/cochlear users inferior to them.

  • @jamesmcdaid1260
    @jamesmcdaid1260 Před 9 měsíci

    I wear a cochlear implant and its the best thing I've done. It's opened up so many paths for me to take. Saying that I do like to spend time on the weekends without the hearing aids and just relax in the silence. Its a unique experience that hearing people will never have the opportunity to experience. Like this scene says, "Theres peace in the silence"

      Thanks for the comment! Not the same thing but I have had tinnitus since I was a kid and man sometimes I honestly wish I could just experience pure silence, it really drives me insane sometimes especially late at night when it's quiet. I pretty much have something playing 24/7 just to mask the ringing, I can't sleep without headphones on. When I watched this film and he took out the aid and it was just silence, man I really felt that. Even tho I can hear, I really relate to wanting to appreciate silence too.

    This movie is very comforting when it comes to deafness. Ruben (and everyone truth to be told) had such a great time while staying at Joe's and could easily adapt to the deaf community. His denial of his problems however won't let him. And being deaf is clearly the least of Ruben's problems.

    • @jamesmcdaid1260
      @jamesmcdaid1260 Před 9 měsíci

      This film accurately portrayed the multiple layers of Deaf society. The differences between the Deaf that reject hearing aids/cochlear implants and the ones that seek treatment. The Deaf Societies purist attitudes towards the deaf that want to include themselves amongst the hearing culture is disgusting. No-one chooses to be Deaf, people should be supported no matter their approach to their disability.

      wanting to hear again and knowing there's something out there that can make that happen is selfish? sounds pretty fucking stupid to me. these people here aren't handicapped blah blah, well yeah the inability to hear puts you at a disadvantage which is handicapping yourself, why wouldn't you want to gain that ability back. I get why he couldn't stay there and make the other kids feel like shit, just I dunno. Joe is a little too rightious for me, it'd be the same as saying anne frank was perfect the way she was dumb deaf n blind n didn't need to change herself for no man. well that's pretty handicapped in general and if given the chance i think i'll take my sight and hearing back over pride.

    The fact Joe's character doesn't get the closure and he doesn't get the happy ending is just another reason why this film is incredible. Sound of Metal is a film about everything and nothing and how Ruben copes with that transition. But it's also a film about real things that happen to real people. Not everyone gets a happy ending. Strings get left loose. We never find out what happened to Joe, because we've been following things from Ruben's perspective the whole time. Just like real life, you don't get closure on everything.

    • @ledzep310
      @ledzep310 Před rokem

      Joe is disappointed. He's disappointed because he'd rather Ruben accepted what happened to him and stayed with the community. I would suspect Joe kept on doing exactly what he was doing prior to meeting Ruben. We do know what happens to Ruben, to me - the ending was him finally accepting what happened to him. Perhaps finding the "stillness" Joe was talking about.

  • @hs4974
    @hs4974 Před rokem

    Lots of people seem to not get this scene. It's not simply that Joe is disappointed in Ruben's choice. His concern is that Ruben is acting like an addict. An addict can't find peace in being still and just inside their own body. At this stage, Ruben is trying to fill the hole in his life by chasing something impossible and fleeting. He will never be able to hear, in the same way that drugs will never satisfy. Ruben is willing to risk losing everything (specifically selling his rv, which he describes as his home) in order to chase some impossible vision of peace. This has parallels with an addict selling something precious to them or someone they love just for their next fix. The reason Joe has to ask him to leave is that he is acting like an addict, not because he had the surgery. Joe asked Ruben to sit in his study every morning to help him find peace in the silence. As someone who has struggled with addiction for a long time in various forms, this is one of the hardest things to do. Just sitting and being can feel agonising. I can't imagine what it must be like to be an addict who can't hear - to only have the sounds of your thoughts and your body and no other distractions. As Joe says, he is protecting the children from thinking that they can "fix" being deaf, and from thinking that being deaf is a flaw that should be corrected. Disabilities can carry with them a lot of shame, and to have a person living in a deaf community whilst doing everything they possibly can to not be deaf is definitely not ideal. But I think ultimately the reason Joe asked Ruben to leave was because Ruben was relapsing into an addict mentality. It was clearly an excruciatingly difficult decision for Joe, but ultimately, I think, a brave and powerful one. At the end of the film, Ruben finally finds something like peace in the silence of just being, even if it's only for a moment.

    • @Grzma
      @Grzma Před rokem

      I don't think Joe asked Ruben to leave because he was acting like an addict. The whole community was for deaf addicts, no? I thought the reason they were isolated from the rest of the world was to stop them from communicating with old "contacts", people who would try to persuade them to return to their old lifestyle etc. (which is kind of exactly what happened with Ruben when he snuck into Joe's office). Joe asked Ruben to leave because having someone in the community, who treats deafness as a disability and something that needs to be "fixed", will damage the cohesive structure of the community. They have found peace and acceptance in being deaf and Ruben, who refuses to accept his new life, will hurt the people who related to him and trusted him. The other folks would start to feel like there is something wrong or broken about them, too. Joe needed to keep his community strong and safe.

    • @Jah_LEASE_yah
      @Jah_LEASE_yah Před rokem

      The first part of your statement I agree with. Joe is afraid for Ruben because his behavior parallels that of an addict, chasing a fix that can never give him the peace he needs. But he DID ask him to leave because he got the surgery. Because besides the fact that Joe is afraid for Ruben, he is also disappointed in him for getting the surgery. because the whole idea that Deafness needs to be fixed is offensive to him and all the other deaf people that live there. He has built his home on the foundation that addiction needs to be fixed not deafness and compromising on that foundation by allowing someone who "fixed" their deafness to live there threatens the sobriety of everyone else that lives there. This scene is so good because there is so much going on at once and there are so many emotional layers. This whole movie is a total master class.

    • @joanie442ty
      @joanie442ty Před rokem

      @@Jah_LEASE_yah i dont quite agree that Ruben getting the surgery was offensive to joe i think joe loves Ruben and really wishes that his choice gives him happiness i think its just really about protecting the system they have built because it really is life and death and he cant afford for the emotional safety of all these addicts and kids to be compromised. i mean from the first scene we meet joe we know he does not make compromises and has strict principles because what he has built works in a world where lots of things dont work at all. now reading back ur paragraph i realise your saying exactly this lol mb. all I'm saying is that i dont think joe asks Ruben to leave because of any offense he took because Ruben's decision is in no way selfish or offensive to other deaf people i think its just strictly the fact it compromises joes system.
