  • Cinema is an art of sound and vision, but it's the rare film that explores both with equal vitality. In a remarkably assured feature debut, Darius Marder finds a cinematic language that's perfectly matched to this story of a man fighting to hold on to what defines him.
Riz Ahmed is a noise metal drummer. Shirtless and full of coiled intensity, he hammers out ferocious sets with his girlfriend and bandmate (Olivia Cooke). But with each show, a persistent ringing in his ears worsens until sound drops out altogether. For a deaf musician and his partner who've built their precarious existence doing what they know and love, what happens now? If he can't recover his hearing, who will he become?
Marder, who co-wrote the screenplay for Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines (TIFF '12), begins in similar territory here - characters living by their own rules. But this film moves in new directions, and according to its own beat. As this drummer explores medical interventions to restore his hearing and begins to learn about both the experience and the culture of deafness, he confronts the gap between external sounds and that tinny inner noise he can't shake: the sound of metal. Marder and his team do groundbreaking work to convey that subjective sonic experience, while Ahmed is simply brilliant and fully immersed in his character. As the story takes one surprising turn and then another, it builds to a journey that looks - and sounds - like life.

This is a movie about life and the walk to do to accept stillness and limitations for our traumas and conditions when they arrive sooner or later.
It shows the limit is not the loss, the limit is our mind and how we overcome and accept life while it happens.

This movie was so beautiful and moving in so many ways. An incredibly gentle approach to depicting a culture and so so respectful. My favorite this year (and it's on Amazon starting today!)

Riz will eventually win an Oscar - he is a great actor - he just has to wait a little longer - just like Joaquin Phoenix did - but it will certainly happen!

I was Shocked to hear the death of Chadwick Boseman, he deserve a tribute from academy but not a posthumous Oscar, Indeed golden Globes already gives him. Riz deserves the Oscar, because more than a year he practiced drummer and more than six months he learnd the sign language for 'Sound of Metal'

I so appreciate what Paul Raci said at the end. It is very important to be aware that there are so many deaf and HOH people out there who are not involved in Deaf Culture and literally feel lost between worlds. I thought the film did a beautiful job at capturing this in such a raw, profound way! Thank you to all involved! Beautiful work!

Can't wait to see this movie. I would like to add, as a HOH/Deaf person myself I was watching this video and appreciated so much that you were mindful to involve the Deaf culture by including an interpreter which opens to equal communication. Thank you! However, it would have been even better if the interpreter was included throughout the whole Q&A but thankful for captions. It's sad to say that this is common and hope movies like yours brings a lot more awareness to the Deaf and Deaf culture. thanks again
