Jonathan Groff Channels His Inner Sutton Foster to Perform "Anything Goes"

- Jonathan Groff (Broadway's "Spring Awakening," MCC Theater's "The Submission," TV's "Boss" and "Glee") enlisted ensemble dancers from Broadway's Tony Award-winning "Anything Goes" - and even learned Tony winner Kathleen Marshall's choreography - to recreate the eight-minute title tap number from the Cole Porter musical at MCC Theater's March 26 "Miscast" benefit. Here's the number in all its glory, sung and danced at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. The annual benefit brings together Broadway stars to perform songs from roles in which they'd never be cast. (Groff also sang "The Music That Makes Me Dance" from "Funny Girl.")

You say miscast, but deep inside, Jonathan Groff is Sutton Foster
This made my day. XD
TRUTH
I mean Brian D 'Arcy played Shrek in shrek the musical and Sutton Foster was Fiona and Brian was a King George
So....
Kaha Smith the original King George. He always plays those roles off-Broadway then lets others take over when they go to Broadway for some reason.
Sascha Houpt Brian left to star in Something Rotten, he was great!!
He did Sutton's exact choreography, exact hand gestures, exact vocal inflections... this is beyond impressive. I can't even imagine how much work he put into this!
lolimnotfunnydude well he said he spent the last 6 months before miscast learning this ;) (even though I don't believe it took him that long)
lolimnotfunnydude Ww
hands up if you're a total amateur and yet completely understand this mimicry madness....
lolimnotfunnydude I totally agree
i mean he definitely wasn't lying when he said he watched the video 4 times a day for like several months
groff is such a diva i can't
Lucia, yet mr.st james still cannot compare to UNIQUE
@@rice_bullets like Unique is a diva, but if they'd just written Jesse St. James as Groff Unique would seem so normal
"Toes toes toes... ass ass ass" I can't... dead inside XD
His commentary of the dance steps is literally me when I learn anything.
3:34
Saaaame!!!
same!
And to everyone hating on this saying "Sutton was better", chill. This is supposed to be funny and for a benefit concert where actors perform songs in roles they could never get cast as. Perfect pick for Jonathan. You go, Jonathan. He is probably the only male that could do that song justice and he did it with such flair.
Absolutely. He was quite extraordinary.
John Barrowman did it equally as well. Check him out.
@@Susie-woo I don't suppose we could get BOTH of them on stage for that.....?
@@Travlr013 Oh, please. I'd love to see that
He did this to honor her and her amazing talent! It’s not a competition. This is wonderful. It’s not about who is better. Especially when it’s a girl and a guy singing the same song. So silly people have to automatically compare. And think he probably didn’t have the rehearsal time like she did to learn the tap number and he was still awesome!! I love them both
Jonathan groff's obsession with Sutton foster is like mine with Jonathan groff
Groffseption
Same here... get out of my head! LOL
SAME
oh god me too he is my life
SAME
Considering Jonathan isn't a trained dancer, this is AMAZING!!!
newxromantic he's had to have taken more than a few dance classes though, tap isn't easy
Of course he's had training -- to be a MT star, you have to be the triple threat
newxromantic he did many dance numbers when he was on glee so i'd say he's probably had some extensive training
NOOORAAAA
sandrarowe66 definitely has it right. The competition is crazy on Broadway, so in order to even make it there in the first place, he's had to have had experience focusing on at LEAST tap and jazz.
absolutely no one:
jonathan groff: ass ass ass
Goal in life: Learn this tap number.
I think stewie did this on family guy! 😂
It's not very difficult, just alot of steps
Kacie Broadfield same I’m eager to do this musical just so I can learn this lol
My goal in life: try to talk you out of losing your mind.
Goal in life: do at least one tap number ever. I still have yet to learn how to tap dance and I’ve always wanted to do it!
I'm obsessed with Johnathan Groff's commentary during the dance - can he just narrate my life?
Life would be much more interesting with Groffsauce narrating it
If he narrated my life
She sat on the couch watching me for a full 5 hours without moving
He could narrate my life any day of the week😏🍑
Can he and Samuel L. Jackson narrate my life?
Yes, the commentaries make him seem SO at ease and confident. I'm obsessed too
Shoutout to the spotlight guy who is trying his best
I would be too caught up in Johnathan’s performance for that job 😂
one of the reasons I always refused to do spot, lol. I love working the lightboard, but no way am I doing spot.
Spotting dancers is weirdly difficult. Me and my mate would map out their choreography so that follow spotting was easier but someone who hasn’t been in rehearsals is flipping daunting.
@@kathellis4775 I had a TD ask me to spot Pippin for a performance when we lost our spot op. I was like, no freakin way. And I'd been to every rehearsal during tech week. I just knew I wouldn't be able to do it well. That was the first time he and I ever argued, lol
😂
They should ask him to host the Tonys!
With NPH.
so true! 2018 tonys please come through!
PLEASE
J. P. Bowie who might one spam with emails to convince the tonys to let that happen
YES
Nothing makes me happier than his charming commentary while tap dancing
TheBuddsO c
"Hello ladies, how ya doing..?"
Its almost a shame he's gay lol
@@droid327 thats just what us gays do, if i do say so myself
I agree!
could have pulled back on that some imo
Ok, so this is how you know he's a lead. He's, by far, not the best dancer on h=the stage, but he's the only one you can't take your eyes off him. He's got "it," no question.
exactly
You should watch glee his dancing is on point there
and ''it" is that butt
exactly
It's called being always in the middle and having all cameras pointed on you. Not really hard to stand out..
Wow king George the 3rd really did go insane.
witty
Yes
My favorite part is when he has to stop for a second to catch his breath, because it shows that no normal human could do all that number without a break, thus showing us that Sutton Foster is, in fact, not from this world
Sutton does take a quick break too! Stands and commands center stage. She’s a goddess
I think the point was that he was doing everything exactly as Sutton Foster had done in the performance
Reno/Foster does stand at that point, and the chorus comes in singing right after THEY finished the extended sequence. Kudos always to the singers/dancers🎉🎉🎉
Forget the literal song-and-dance talent and his beauty, his STAGE PRESENCE itself is ELECTRIC! Talk about SELLING IT.
Sarah Weissman nothing of dance talent. even the worst dancer can dance the most hard choreography when practiced enough. singing talent yes, dancing no.
Did you ever see TAKING WOODSTOCK? No song & dance, just riding a horse... Star quality!
He’s owning that room.
I love how he's parodying Sutton's singing style. Bravo ;)
I now want to see Sutton Foster as King George...
I would pay a lot of money to see that.
☠
Spittle included, I hope. I want to see her eyes go WILD. 😳🤪🤣
AND MRS. POTTS!
He's like an at home video yoga instructor with his commentary. 😂
Haha yes
Do you know what yoga is? More like Zumba or just dance workout
He is so much alike Sutton Foster in this, you can tell how much he has studied her its so cute.
It’s so cute and I’m dying again 11years later! Lol
I'm really mad that they didn't give him a full song in frozen. Yeah, he did get a crappy 30 second song. He is an amazing singer. Seriously, I don't understand why they couldn't have him sing something more!
This dude played a funny man. That's all I needed
I wonder if there was but it got cut...thought the same thing!
+Sarah Weissman there kind of was xD kind of a long story but the songwriters kind reached the end of the movie and realized he didn't have a full song so they wrote a reindeers are better than people reprise for him to sing over the credits, but that eventually was cut by Demi lovato's let it go. He didn't even get a chance to record it but u can listen to one of the composers sing it. My favorite line from the song comes at the end when it goes "why didn't I get a real song..." 😂
Becuase Frozen is trash and he was just waiting to shine in Hamilton over that trite.
maybe in Frozen 2 🤔
Can we just appreciate the fluidity in Lawrence (the tallest guy)'s arm movements at 5:02? Like I am simultaneously intimidated and obsessed with watching his arms
oh my god ya what it's kinda creepy but really impressive... he reminds me of the ice guy from the incredibles
Wow thanks for pointing that out !
Natalie Cook HONEY WHERE'S MY SUPERSUIT!!!! (Sorry I had to)
Lawrence is god
ITS LIKE HE HAS NO BONES
This performance is pretty damn impressive when you take into account that Jonathan isn't trained in any style of dance. Sutton Foster took dance lessons from the age of 4- I get that this isn't the most complicated choreography that Sutton could do, but Jonathan being able to do more than just keeping up with the routine is impressive. I think, at least.
I love how he is talking during the dance like it's nothing😂
The stamina of Broadway performers is unreal. To be able to continue to sing that song like that after that intense dance break takes a lot of practice.
he is too pure for this world
Cassidy Gage excuse me, see Spring Awakening.
austin schween Damn right.
THE WAY HE DID EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HER VOCAL INFLECTIONS IM DYING
hes so fucking cute
I agree
jules watts Your right its true
honestly
4:24 his giggle hahaha
haha on the screen at 6:27 "Sutton, eat your heart out"
And then the I love you Sutton at the end! I wonder if there are any others we're missing because we can't see the screen the whole time.
OMG I MISSED THAT THANK U
can you be sexually attracted to a voice
Have you even heard Tom Hiddleston read equations? I fucking died!
yes!
Have you seen his interviews? That voice could read me a bedtime story every night.
yes I am to many including groff
Abi Alston Ohhhhhh hell yeah.
His commentary i cant 😂😂😂
I didn't think that I could possibly be more in love with Jonathan Groff. I was wrong.
Oh gosh, he can tap too? No stopping Jonathan Groff ;)
He's Jonathan Groff, he can do anything.
Jonathan Groff is love, Jonathan Groff is life.
Darude - Sandstorm
unfabgirl that's what I love about him
Beautifullytragic6 I guess you can say he is NONSTOP. I'll go home now.
I can't even imagine how much work he put into this! He did Sutton's exact choreography, exact hand gestures, exact vocal inflections... this is beyond impressive.
lmao @ the projection "Sutton, eat your heart out" "I love you Sutton!"
YES THIS IS THE BEST.
Beautiful. Somehow Sutton F manages to do it is a very nonchalant, upright way -- as if she's barely moving. Saves a lot of energy. He's more athletic. They are both brilliantly awesomely adorkable.
GROFFSAUCE THAT WAS SO IMPRESSIVE BRAVO
YASS
i read this in lins voice
Jonathan Groff has by far the best Miscast performance ever. He practiced for this, he came prepared, he knocked it out of the park.
He's like a Broadway cardio trainer. He is amazing.
He needs to do a show with John Barrowman.
Kasino80 you don't understand how happy this comment made me. I live for John Barrowman
dude. please.
YES. PLEASE
Kasino80 YASSSS JOHN BARROWMAN AND JONATHAN GROFF MY FAVE PEOPLE EVER
With how heavy flirts th two of them are, they'd be making out and stumbling off the stage wrapped up in each other in ten seconds flat, haha.
If you haven’t done this routine in your kitchen 30 times a day since Playbill released the Sutton Foster in rehearsal video, are you really even gay??
That little giggle just killed me. He is the ultimate fanboy and I LOVE it! Gracious he's not even trained and look at that rhythm. Groff, you crazy loved teddy bear, I can't handle you at all.
are we not going to talk about his little laugh?? no? okay
I need an infinite loop of just Groff's commentary to constantly play in he background of my life.
Them: What's your favourite Jonathan Groff role?
Normal people: King George, Melchior, Jesse St James, etc
Me: Sutton Foster
Did he really say "You look so good in your khakis" at 3:15? Spring Awakening much? xD
Katherine Byers yeah he did
I was starting to worry I was the only one who noticed 😂
pretty nasty!
I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT LOL
JONATHAN IS PERFECT
@DankMemes "well jake, you look so good in your khakis"
Jonathan Groff is obsessed with Sutton Foster and I, a Sutton obsessed with Jonathan Groff need to find a Jonathan to continue this cycle.
The fact that they have 'Sutton, eat your heart out' rolling on the marquee makes me so happy.
I feel like I'm in love with him and I haven even met him
A friend of mine was in a movie with Jonathan. He says he's very nice.
Ditto! ...and I'm gonna sue you for stealing my thoughts!
+Rose Taylor wait really
Me too and I'm not even into men D:
Not sure I have ever seen anyone so comfortable and relaxed on stage. Bravo.
As a musical fan, I find his presence on stage so impressive and refreshing. When he is on stage, I literally can`t see anyone else. His energy is incredible. And this one was hell of a performance. Great dancing skills and his voice is amazing.
I feel like this boy could sing literally anything and he would still make it look like he was just causally not even trying. Also, didn't know he could tap. If someone could let me know how to become friends with this god I would be very appreciative.
SUPERMAN!
I was being picky of Groff's nasal push and lack of oral interpretation of the text -- a hallmark of his previous performances that I really loved. But I've only had to sing and dance once and it's like running a marathon, while remembering choreography, lyrics, orchestration, and having to determine when to breathe.
It's astonishging that he has enough wind left to deliver that last note and isn't perspiring like a lawn sprinkler. IN A SWEATER, no less. I decided against two weeks in Paris and have never regretted opting for four days in New York where I saw SPRING AWAKENING twice.
Jon Groff is my hero!
His voice was like that because he was trying to imitate Sutton Foster. His real singing voice is so beautiful!
My only problem is yes, he was interpreting Sutton but that isnt an excuse for the bad diction. Sutton is the queen of diction, even if her singing style can be a little flippant, and Groff just pushing diction to the wayside for style is a little sad.
@@Kensie2559 Maybe he was doing a meta Patti LuPone homage as well...? :)
There is nothing not to like about this, is there? Hours of dedication to learn the steps and routine, just to bring sheer joy and make a crowd smile. What a guy!
I don’t know how many moments in theatre history are as iconic as toes toes toes ass ass ass
This and whipped into shape is my goal fitness level... If I can sing and jump rope and dance without. Sounding like dearth Vader the. I thing I will have made it!
One of my friends has played Brooke and then Reno in my school's productions -- I have no idea how she doesn't have a sixpack by now!!
My high school did Legally Blonde and every single dancer in Whipped into Shape lost at least five pounds by the end of the production because of that dance.
Honestly though how anyone playing Brooke that is actually good at singing yet is able to do that is beyond me
UltimateJoolsFan whipped into shape
omg I lost SO much weight the summer I was in legally blonde!! Whipped into shape is still my favorite to this day, so fun!
6:28 did anyone notice jonathan's little note to sutton on the screen? "sutton, eat your heart out"
Welp... watching this made it official. I'm in love. Sure there's his obviously blessed singing voice, charmingly gregarious personality, kick ass dance skills, delicious sense of humor, Prince Charmingesque handsome face and clearly well proportioned physique... but then, as if those attributes weren't enough, there's that smile. The kind of smile you see (& feel) and think "Oh, shit, I'm in trouble." Gratefully I'm only one of the throng with a simple, harmless celebrity crush. Still... deep sigh & swoon, Mr. Groff.
I didn't think any one video could be this perfect, until now.
I'm more obsessed with this man than I've ever been obsessed with anything
I can no longer listen to this song without hearing “toes toes toes, ass ass ass” 😂
Probably the best male vocalist out there. It's insane.
I am so astounded by Jonathan's talent every single time I see him in anything. Gosh, I adore him
"you look so good in your khakis"
OH THE SUBTLE SPRING AWAKENING REFERENCES
Heres something from him.
"If me undressed you like, nobody will appose"
Also,
Darude - Sandstorm
This tap number is killer!! and he nailed it!!!!
I too have watched Sutton's performance a whole lot. He was perfect, his company was perfect. And kudos for his calling out every member of the group.
Something I never knew I needed until now.
everytime i think i cant love groff more he proves me wrong
I kept looking at his shoes like "Are those tap shoes? Please let those be tap shoes."
“Toes toes toes. Ass ass ass”
jonathan KILLED this
He's enjoying this so much (and _killing_ it)! He's adorable! 😊
JONATHAN GROFFF SAID A SPRING AWAKENING JOKE “LOOKING GOOD IN THOSE KHAKIS” FROM THE B**** OF LIVING AND IM LOVING IT
Jonathan surprised me with such great dancing!!! He is so talented and charming!!! Congratulations on your recent Tony nomination!!! Well deserved and my prediction of his first win at the Tonys!!!!😀😀😀
I have a very deep intense obsession with Jonathan Groff...
On all levels but physical, I am Sutton Foster
I can’t believe this guy plays Holden Ford in Mindhunter!
I love at 3:02 where he almost breaks! this is an amazing performance!
I come back to this clip several times a year because it makes me so damn happy. I love him so much.
Oh god. I didn't think I could love Groffsauce more than I already did. I was wrong.
this video is a true blessing
I came across this by accident, and, boy, am I glad that I did! Pure joy.
Dancing Broadway tap choreography for 5 minutes and then singing? What a pro
He goes from being King George III to this... I'm impressed.
this was forever ago... he went from this to King George III
+Destiny Stephens Oh sorry! I didn't know!!!
+Destiny Stephens Oh sorry! I didn't know!!!
Its okay
This genuinely continues to be one of my favourite videos in the whole world.
I can’t wait for him to get his lifetime achievement award someday
The "I love you, Sutton!" On the background had me.
He has the purest little giggle, my heart!
i hope theres gonna be a genderbent performance like miscast at the tonys cos that would be amazing
I like the way he talks to the dancers throughout.
Wh y didn’t they mic the ensemble their lips are moving but we can’t he a r t h e m
I love both Sutton and Jonathan. Now they need to do something together!
Jonathon melts my heart everytime!
I love his running commentary 😍😍
Jonathan Groff is a true delight!
GENUINELY the cutest human on earth
Who's watching in 2020?
Causal talk during an extravagant tap number... 2 words 1 person..... Jonathan Groff... I love that man
the "alright! alright!" at 5:36 reminded me of Awesome! Woow!
