- At Broadway Backwards 2019, Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Darren Criss (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, TV’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) battled a case of pre-wedding jitters with the rapid-fire patter of Stephen Sondheim’s “Getting Married Today” from Company. Criss, who just got married himself last month, was joined by Ward Billeisen, Michael James Scott and the Broadway Backwards ensemble.

A bevy of Broadway’s brightest stars joined a sold-out audience on March 11, 2019, to celebrate and motivate the LGBTQ community and its allies through gender-reversed renditions of beloved show tunes, spectacular choreography and a record-breaking fundraising total at Broadway Backwards.
The 14th annual edition of the show raised $704,491 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City. The previous fundraising record was set last year at $680,273.
Broadway Backwards (#BroadwayBackwards), which was produced by Broadway Cares at the New Amsterdam Theatre, featured a cast of 130 performers and a live, 12-piece orchestra. It started with two of Broadway’s favorite singing-and-dancing leading men - Gavin Creel and Andrew Rannells - and ended with a stirring anthem led by the evening’s host, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella (Come From Away).
Broadway Backwards creator Robert Bartley wrote and directed this year’s show. Mary-Mitchell Campbell served as music supervisor; Ted Arthur and Christopher D. Littlefield were music directors. The evening's choreographers were Robert Bartley, Karla Puno Garcia, Paul McGill, Mimi Quillin, Stephen Reed and Robbie Roby. The creative team included lighting designer Timothy Reed, costume designers Johnna Fettinger, Jess Gersz and Natalie Loveland, prop designers Jenna Snyder and Alexander Wylie and sound designers Kurt Fischer and Marie Renee Foucher. The production stage manager was Jeff Brancato.

He forgot to mention the SAG Award, which he also won. It is given out by the Screen Actors Guild and is just as, if not more, important than a GG. In short, Darren swept all the television awards for his role in the Andrew Cunanan story, which is rare.

It's the most prestigious of them all in my opinion. But they seem to side with Emmys and golden globes with announcements.

His point in saying he would be intentional about not taking more LGBT roles for a while was that he recognizes his privilege and doesn't want to end up taking opportunities away from LGBTQ actors. Obviously, for a one-off benefit event like this where the whole point is about gender-swapping and such, that's really not an issue. I'm sure he'll stick to what he said in terms of future TV/film/Broadway projects, but for little fun gender-bendy events like this, of course he's not going to shy away just because it might be gay :)

For everyone commenting about how Darren said he wont play gay characters anymore, which i completely agree with btw, queer people should play roles designed for them, we should also realise things aren't clear cut & understand this isn't a normal thing it isn't the same as auditioning, being cast and then being paid to portray a role. This along with all the other benefits/fun events they have that take place throughout the year for Broadway are when they do switch out from the traditional cast roles and just have fun with songs/ shows/ characters they wouldn't usually do.
I love all versions of this & adore this version aswell and the three of them looked like they had a blast doing it. Couple of mistakes but, this song, which is probably one of the hardest to do due to the lyrics and speed (this isn't the fastest version i'm aware) and filmed in front of a live audience i'm impressed that's those couple of lines was all it was and it was saved amazingly and didn't stray or really go out of the context for the feeling of the song.

for some reason i just keep coming back to it and rewatching this for millionth time. i love darren criss and anything he does but this performance makes me want to play it again and again. yeah he’s definitely slower than other people that performed “i’m not getting married” before him but for me his version is way more emotional and i like it that way. like it gives ME anxiety just watching his character having a breakdown. and the way his voice gets really high on 5:17 and kinda breaks later jeez that gives me feels. also michael james scott is absolutely hilarious in this so yeah i just can’t stop rewatching it over and over
