I've never been a great fan of tap dancing, but this production is phenomenal!! - Zábava
This shouldn't be possible....
This is a great example of what NOT to do in Directing a musical.
You do NOT have your leading lady sing a complicated, wordy song with lyrics that all start the same way.
You do NOT then break up said song with an eight and a half minute full on tap number.
You do NOT put your leading lady out front, leading the entire dance ensemble in said break FOR THE FULL NUMBER!
You do NOT then, after dancing for eight minutes, have her finish the song with more verses and end with an 8 measure held note................
The only time a director should ever attempt this is if you have cast Sutton Foster, who can belt a high C in her mask, has a better dance line than most of the ensemble, and can genuinely act. There was not at the time (and maybe even still) another Broadway star with the skill set to pull this off 8 times a week for a 2 year run.
(Though I give Rachel York very VERY high marks for the tour)
I think Stephanie J. Block did a phenomenal job doing it.
That's extra dramatic- plenty of leads dance hard and sing with a belt- from Chicago to Chorus Line, Victor Victoria to South Pacific.
Sutton, also isn't hitting a 'high C' it's middle C, with a slide up to F. There are MANY videos on CZcams where she doesn't hit the G at all and stays on the C.
What makes Sutton excellent is her comedic timing - but gimme a break, plenty of people sing and dance Reno Sweeney.
Sutton Foster is EVERYTHING
Either way, she has a very irritating voice.
@@maggiet9033 she was singing in a character voice and this, and she won a Tony so your opinion is in the minority
This just in: Sutton Foster doesn't require oxygen. More at 11.
Welcome to the 11'oclock news. This just in: Sutton Foster still hasn't taken a breath.
@@Raven-yv6di And we're back... Our sources tell us that Miss Foster is still holding strong with no end in sight! We'll be back after this break!
I love her!
LOL!!! TRUE
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I bet a good 1000 of those views are just Jonathan Groff.
LOL
omg hahahah
Yaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssss
No they're me. I can't stop watching this.
French Llama I love groffsauce 😂❤️
That crushing realization that I will never be Sutton Foster

you don't have to be.
No one will lol
Lol amazing comment
We can all not be sutton foster together 😔
The Internet was invented so we could watch this. All other purposes are incidental.
@@whateverittakes5572 Well I believe you can think her voice is bad, but no where near trash. This is Sutton Foster we're talking about, she's very talented, no matter how much you may dislike it.
@@whateverittakes5572 Oh sure, Sutton Foster, the greatest Broadway talent of her generation and the definition of a singing, acting, dancing triple threat, is "trash" 😂
Internet is for porn -- avenue q
I'm wondering if this is Jonathan Groff's secret account 😂💜
@@whateverittakes5572 awwww looks like someone is bitter they didn't make it on broadway :( keep trying luv! xoxo
Sutton Foster is one of the last in a dying breed of classic Broadway leading ladies. There's such a magnetism to her on stage in the way stars like Mary Martin and Gwen Verdon would captivate back in the day.
THIS
Ccs 0264 la tienda de los horr
Reminds me of the great Eleanor Powell
She is simply SPLENDID!!!
I had the great pleasure of seeing Gwen Verdon, Jerry Orbach, and Chita Rivera in the original production of Chicago! Wonderful memories!
Warning: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME WITHOUT THE GUIDANCE OF YOUR PERSONAL SUTTON FOSTER
Gavin O'Connor 😝😝😝
Where can I get a personal Sutton?
😂
Instructions unclear, I do not own a Sutton Foster.
What amazes me about this is that it's VERY complicated choreography which I'm sure took a long time to master and they do it 8 times a week, yet everyone looks like they're having a good time!
klausweasley I love doing this dance at my theater school. It was hard to learn but now every time plays we dance. Every. Single. Time.
Yes but that’s what rehearsals are for
it took a LONG time to get down - my friend from college is in this number as one of the cast members from this revival - it was quite intense for sure
My problem was always that, once I got it down, my mind would wander and I was in danger of making more mistakes than when first learning it. This is pretty damn good choreography.
@@audreywilliams3596 There's actually not much except a couple of drop shuffle pull changes that the principles do that I would call technical but the sheer sustained energy of this number is what really sells it - and her line and poise in the spin turns is just class.
We had a version of this show as a tv special in England last Christmas with some really really dodgy casting of the suporting cast - Gary Wilmot, Felicity Kendal and IDK who playing Kendal's daughter but it was dire. The same lady in the lead though and real class. As a tap teacher myself I love to see good work, well executed and doesn't it make a difference to get the ladies up on heels instead of builders boots and a Groucho Marx stance.
*Can we think of the amount of calories they burn in this number alone?*
i'm just dancing like crazy in here even thou idk the steps, i'm just creating my own steps. hahahhaha
Sutton Foster tells in an interview at the time that she lost a LOT of weight during rehearsals, especially during the rehearsal for this particular number. She said at one point that she dropped below 100lbs and the producer told her to stop it.
Hank Austin - Wow. That’s crazy. I know Sutton is pretty darn tall too - around my height (I’m 5’9” and change... and I look really skinny if I drop below 130#...)
But in such a dance-heavy show, I can see how one would lose a ton of weight, even if they were already thin!
Yes because i had to do it...XD
INDEEEED :D
Sutton Foster is that impossibly rare find: a true triple threat who can not only sing, dance, *and* act equally well, but can do all of the above better than anyone else on the stage with her. She's one in a million.
More like one in a chorus. Her singing is below par, her acting lacks many qualities, and her dancing lacks grace and elegance. Other than that, she's pretty good. Many people in NY are just as good and didn't get the break.
She really shines, on stage or on screen.
@@nonenoneonenonenone do you realize the breath control needed to pull that off? And a song like this doesn't need super dramatic or flashy acting. Her dancing was just as good, even better than the ensemble. Tell me, do know how to tap dance and belt the final part from the song?
@@nonenoneonenonenoneLove Sutton, but...... #FACTS
Very well said and totally true!!!
Besides this entire performance being incredible, Hugh Jackman always looks like a kid in a candy store at the Tony's! He's always so happy to be there and he always looks like he loves every bit of it and is impressed by everything, such an amazing and incredibly humble man for a person that has accomplished so much!
Jennifer K omg i just noticed him in the audience he's so cute 😂😂
I agree! I think he's happy in general but does he ever love the singing and dancing!
how amazing is that 5 years later this 2 fantastic stars are going to be together on The Music Man? destiny and life are delicious.
Good news! Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackaman will soon star in,
"The Music Man"!
Billy the Greek I’m excited, but still sad that the Schubert Organization kicked out Beetlejuice for it
I love how she just started that last note like she didn't do the longest dancebreak ever at the Tony Awards
Can we just have a little shout-out here for the costume designer? The costumes are completely adorable.
Yes!!
Yeeeessss!! I love these costumes so much more than the original production's.
Seriously they all look like moving illustrations from a 1950s beach magazine. It looks fun
Sutton or Patti? Everyone is forgetting that Jonathan Groff absolutely killed this, come on now
truuuuuuuuueee
Yep,he sure did!!!Love,love love him.

Hello boys you look so good in your khakis
her economy of movement, her natural style, her singing, her acting, her charisma, her talent -- she is unmatched IMO
Bebe Neuwirth, for one, has more.
I actually never seen Anything Goes but the tap dancing is so epic and refreshing! You rarely find dancing like that in a musical nowadays except Newsies. Also, Sutton Foster has a stunning voice
You should watch the movie with Mitzi Gaynor! She is fantastic!
Love tap dancing
Anthony Lawson You don’t say
Emily KS Been a fan of tap dancing since Happy Feet
I just found a video of the London West End production that also had Sutton Foster starring in it. First time I had seen more than a few performances of various songs from it. Loved it
literally one of the best tap routines of all time.
HOW ARE THEIR TAPS SO CLEAN IM STILL SO SHOOK ITS BEEN 8 YEARS
I was about to finish my junior year of HS
All the comparisons here of Patti LuPone vs. Sutton Foster in the same show are just apples and oranges. Foster is a dancer who also sings, whereas LuPone is a singer who also dances a bit. In this number, Sutton is the central dancer throughout the very long (this is shortened by almost 4 minutes from the actual Broadway number) tap sequence. She immediately sings another verse and chorus afterwards. In Patti's show, she does a few little steps at the beginning, then stands against the wall and nods to the beat while the dancers do their thing, then a few more steps and singing at the end. She really doesn't have the "dance then sing" stamina that Sutton has. In my opinion, doesn't make either of them better or worse than the other. They're both pretty fantastic.
Thank you! People are obsessed with comparing EVERYONE. Choosing between Foster and LuPone is impossible. They’re both legends with very unique qualities.
Facts
Like choosing between Ginger and Mary Ann. Pick your poison.
And pointless, since "star quality" has nothing to do with dancing or singing better.
Sutton is a singer too. She sings a lot in many shows and concerts. Still the comparisons are not needed. The revivals are decades apart. Love Patti in everything. She always gets teased and imitated for her enunciation. People just really need to appreciate the talent which both of these women have a ton of!
She makes everything look so effortless. Her tap dancing is incredibly relaxed-it looks so easy! Of course we know how this isn't the case, it's just her immense talent on display!
I’ve loved tap dancing since watching Happy Feet
how can she belt that note after all that and still be perfect!!! OMG!!!
Real talk to everyone in the comments: Sutton and Patti are both fierce bitches. Stop comparing them and enjoy both of their badass performances!
starilie we all know jonathan was the best reno anyways
Wow! This really brings back the style of upbeat tap dancing with lively music of the 1930's musicals. Great job done by all for an enjoyable performance.
The only show I've seen like that was 42nd Street. I've seen that one twice actually
Omg Groff, look how pretty you've gotten.
Jane Doe a
Ok so Sutton Foster's great. That goes without saying. But that *ensemble!!* They danced incredibly and then while still dancing immediately launched into singing a similarly wordy and complex part of the song _with_ _harmony,_ while Sutton stopped to take a breath.
UGH SUTTON IS JUST SO DAMN GOOD
Check out Patty Lupone. doing anything goes at the Tony's.
Even among Broadway singers, Sutton Foster's annunciation and clarity is amazing, while still sounding so natural.
By natural, you mean amateur and forced, right?
this tapping number is so magical I love it
Sutton Foster was great in this. She was in the touring company that came to Phoenix and she didn't pause like she did here but sang full voice at the end. She was amazing. After just reading the first line of the comment below, I'm not going to read anymore. You can't take away from her wonderful performance!
(
I run out of breath just watching this performance. What a goddess!
There's Tap Dancing, and then there's *Tap DANCING*
Sutton took on a "character voice" for this role... It's not Sutton singing, its Reno Sweeney. Nice!
ohmusicsweetmusic Its her
actually i have to disagree i think she just sounds like Fiona/older Millie id say she took on more f a character voice in Young Frankienstine or even a little with Janet in Drowsy Chaperone but she's SUUUUUPER Sutton as Reno. i saw her live she's just Sutton, Fantastic! but Sutton, even SJB was also just SJB if u wanna hear the "character" of reno watch Rachel York out of all 3 of them She was BORN to play this role! she's just unreal and so effortless. Don't get me wrong i saw sutton live, i loved her, i don't argue the Tony win at all(totally deserved!) but once she's up against the Reno's who replaced her its clear she's not the most AMAZING one, and she's just talking and singing in her own voice, rite down to singing through her nose.
I agree - Sutton is singing in character which explains the less than Fosteresque perfection we're used to...and that's gotta be hard. The company is extraordinary - as is the choreography - and lets not forget to tip our hats to Cole Porter. He'd have to LOVE this.
@@neurofire No character sings like that. The clenched jaw is all Sutton.
@@nonenoneonenonenoneoh my god you’re in the replies of like every single comment that praises her performance trash talking her, has Sutton Foster murdered your grandparents? give it a rest, you seem pathetic and bitter, I bet you don’t have one ounce of her talent.
Seeing as this routine is normally 8+ minutes long, just shows how incredible Sutton is at what she does, does it without breaking a sweat!
The amount of stamina one must have to do all that dancing and sing at the same time. Kudos to her.
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Little Women
The Drowsy Chaperone

Each show she did she SLAYED as always 👑😉
Sodapop246 8 Don't forget Little Woman AND Shrek the musical!! She was awesome one of my favorite shows that I've seen her done. Also the full production was professionally filmed and is currently available on Netflix (Shrek)!
Sodapop246 8 we just did Drowsy Chaperone at my school and I played Janet and man was it hard to even attempt to live up to Sutton
Sodapop246 8 Young Frankenstein?! She was AMAZING as Inga!
Next year she's in the music man alongside Hugh Jackman as professor Harold hill
Sodapop246 8 not to mention Annie’s 20th anniversary run in ‘97
Sutton is a class act pure and simple....a generous soul, a team player and a consummate professional!
Oh, that's just good old fashioned Broadway musical magic right there!!
I'm almost a fan of the classics as i am of more contemporary musicals. However, i haven't seen Anything Goes because i was not open to how it has evolved in terms of conception and song order since the 30's.
I like how Patti gives more of the 'serious' and 'mature' vibe while Sutton brings a lively but confident energy, but both are just as great. :3
Sutton can do anything 😍
I should have never stopped tap dancing!
Sabrina Fattal I should have started
nani.terimorniko
This show and newsies really makes me regret quitting!
Same here! Haha.
You can always find an adult class and start tapping and having fun again
Nothing is more exhilarating than a tap number.
one of sutton’s best qualities imo is her comedic timing, for me, its what sets her apart from other broadway leading ladies
The sailor behind her at the very end is really selling it. I love it.
Can we appreciate for a second that these people at tapping in HEELS
Well it is normal to wear heels in tap dancing. It gives more a loud tap
So glad she won the Tony. So deserving!
this makes my 19th or 109th viewing - lost count - - cannot get enough. Thrills me every time. What talent...
1:21 i always come here and i don't want to listen the speech in the beginning.... i love you Sutton
if sutton foster randomly walked up to me and slapped me for no reason i’d be the one apologizing
those men tap dancing had literally the cutest outfits i was in friggin love for a sec.
lol hugh's look of sheer delight at the end
4:36 Chills. Just chills. Some of my favorite harmonies anywhere
This woman is the definition of a star. I am never not just absolutely blown away by the effortlessness and near perfection of her performance, regardless of the performance. Her voice is just a gift from god and her ability to story tell with her voice and facial expressions is just….. 👌🏼👏🏼
This is classic Broadway. Never gets old
this is what people should call talent
Although it's a shortened version of the proper stage one, the camerawork, sound quality and lighting make this one of the best to watch of this number. Sutton Foster being the very delicious icing on the cake.
almost forgot to watch this today

This performarce is amazing, I can't stop watching it.
I couldve given this a standing ovation if i were there!
Sutton Foster dances with such ease and grace, almost effortlessly. She's amazing. And those long legs. They go from here to Ya-Ya!
I think I've literally watched this performance every other day for almost two years now. CZcams just knows and it's always in my suggested videos.
Choreography this good is my kink.
4:17-4:39 gets me rock hard.
will forever be captivated by this performance
this energy is *IMMACULATE- UNMATCHED-UGH*
One of the times a group of artists succeed in making an old tune sound brand new and fresh
I wish the song portion was longer! I adore her voice!
Klespyrian I’ve always thought the same thing!!!!
Glorious! That's Broadway!!!
The audience is so pompous. They all know Sutton is the top of the game and not one person stood up. Sutton is EVERYTHING. This is such a wonderful production.
I hope PBS films the West End engagement before it tours the UK
@@manuelorozco7760 so do I! Sutton truly blows me away.

does every broadway lead know how to tap dance like this or is sutton foster just AWESOME?
She always makes singing and dancing seem effortless. I know that's part of the job and it takes a lot of work to make it look easy. But she just seems as if it's as easy as breathing for you.
This and King of New York are my favorite tap numbers
Sutton Foster is incredible!
Sutton Foster makes it look effortless, just incredible.
That's ovation worthy - how come nobody rose to their feet?
I asked this as well.
sutton is a revelation of fun!!! CUTE SAILORS, LUV THE BLONDE...
The thing that always floors me about this is the nature of the character means Sutton Foster has to do all this with the air of "what like, it's hard?" and she more than pulls it off.
Its been years since I've watched this and I still don't know how she did it without fainting
Thank you, Cole Porter!
Im exhausted just listening to it and that was just over half the dancing. Amazing stamina.
Bloody marvellous!!! Undoubtedly one of the best ever tap sequences.I always wanted to be able to tap dance but it's too late now, old, overweight, bad hip, dodgy ticker and two left size 14 feet. Ah well can't have everything.
I want tap dancing sailors for Christmas.
Just letting everybody know.
Same. I just want to open my door ot see 10 men in full sailor costume tap dancing
So nice to see Hugh Jackman applauding Sutton Foster. Who would've guess a decade later they would star opposite each other in The Music Man on Broadway!
I wish i can fly there for that. As a fan of the Music Man, It's exciting
I remember clearly rolling my eyes, ughhhh her comes that Sutton Foster ugh. I had seen a few things on her, snippets really, but for some reason, she just never clicked. THEN I saw this--and I leaped to my feet and became an instant fan. She's amazing.

I've seen at least 200 shows on Broadway, and I still think this show and this number is the best I have ever seen when it comes to musicals. I will never forget seeing it live on stage....
THE most impressive number ever performed at the Tonys hands down
Think of the hours and hours and hours of practice it took for her, and all of the cast, to get to the point where they could pull this off. Absolutely amazing. Well done!!!
Little fun fact, sutton actually had bronchitis during this performance..she still performed because she didn’t want to miss winning a tony!! Such talent she has!!!
Broadway! There's nothing to compare.
Amen! I've never been to NYC before but it's perhaps the easiest place on Earth to find pure talent and art blended together.
Manuel, since posting my comment about a year ago, it has been brought to my attention that London's East End is quite comparable to Broadway. I've never been to London, so I can't verify that, but I'm willing to take it on faith.
gjm1953 You mean West End and thank you. I never been to London either
