The Jaguar XJ220 is the craziest 1990s supercar. Today I'm reviewing the Jaguar XJ220 to show you why it's so special and unique -- and why it was so crazy. I'm going to show you all around the XJ220, and then I'm going to take it out on the road and drive the Jaguar XJ220 supercar.

Just think about it, this car had to compete against the F40, the 959, the eb110 and the McLaren F1. Those were the years.
pathetic(
Great point! It was going up against cars that will go down as some of the all time greatest. IMO it held it’s own in some respects and has always been under rated.
Yes, you are.
Around a real life race track, the F40 would beat those cars handily. But they were all interesting in their own way!
@@Mikebumpful yea no it wouldn't the McLaren f1 was literally made for the track it even won lm in 1995 and had a top speed of 240 while the f40 had a top speed of 201 mph
217mph from 540bhp? From a turbo'd V6 is ridiculously impressive for 1992.
Even today.
I feel the same.
It has insanely long gearing, earlier diablos were also like that. You could probably go 70 80 mph in first gear
Same with the Mclaren F1. 240mph with only 600HP and a 5spd. From a naturally aspirated v12. No EVERY super cat has 600hp and turbos but still wont do 240mph.
Add in WAY better gearing and 7 and 8spd trannies plus alot more knowledge of aero and you would think every super car would do nearly 250.
This was the car that got me interested in cars in first place. Growing up in a smaller rural town, I never saw anything sportier or more exotic than a Celica. I saw this pictured in a magazine like Road & Track or Motor Trend and it blew my mind. The rear end on it is still one of my favorites of any car.
Growing up in the 90s, this was my dream car! Had the scale metal collectibles and would sketch this car repeatedly. Can't believe there was a time you could pick one up used for under $100k!
What!?
I don't think these were ever that cheap
@@pajerofan22 According to Jay Leno's Garage episode on CZcams featuring a Blue 1993, in the late 90s/early 00s they were under $100k.
These cars were super undervalued until people born inlate 1970s-1980s got old enough and made money then everyone who had it on wall or Marchbox could finally afford them and now we are where we are..people like me born in 1983..my father never liked stuff like this he loved muscle cars and hot rods because when he was younger his favorite cars we like Buick gsx and he had an 442 cutlass

This is probably my favorite car of all time. It’s just so gorgeous.
Best looking car ever designed IMO! And that says something coming from a guy who is primarily a fan of 1960's British and Italian sports cars!
It was quite common in the 1960s and early '70s for people to siphon petrol from parked cars at night. By the mid-80s, practically every car had a locking fuel cap (or a locking door covering the fuel cap). Cars sold in Britain (and, I expect, the rest of Europe) today all have a locking mechanism to prevent unauthorised access to the fuel.
I figured that the point was to keep people from stealing the Jaguar fuel cap.
Yes, there are literally three types, the simpliest are these lockable fuel caps like here or on other (cheap) cars without or with optional central locking, these have also fuel doors without a lock but a recess for your finger so you can simply flip it open.
And the other two types have normal fuel caps but the door is unlocked from the inside (on the Golf/Jetta Mk IV it's in the center console next to the parking brake/handbrake, on the Octavia I it was in the center dashboard next to the other buttons for things like heated rear window, ESP/ESC or Diff lock on 4WD) or on most recent cars you just push it in and it flips open (and when you lock the vehicle, the bolt with the spring will rotate and lock).
... or prevent nefarious denizens from placing nasty materials INTO the gas tank?
For a while, it was unfortunate that young people or social envy dumped sugar into the tank to ruin the engine.

oh sht
that's actually terrifying :V
That cringe thing you did in highschool.
Car built in Coventry at abbey panels . Which I worked on myself when I was a apprentice sheet metal worker .
An automatic pop up antenna was a status symbol back then. In ‘92 that meant you had a fancy car. I had to pull mine up manually and then it just stayed up until I pushed it back down again. Or until I went through a car wash and it got snapped off because I forgot to put it down first.
Undoubtedly, the drag from those side turn signals is what prevented it from reaching 220 mph.
rthomp03 no they might have left something in front compartment
Holy crap this is a famous car. I never thought I would see Doug Demuro review this. The Jaguar Xj220 is obviously nearly as famous now as it was in the early 90s when it came out. Damn it was famous then though. A production car that reached 210 mph? In the early 90s a car with a v8 engine that was not an f1 car that could reach that speed was insane. Yes of course the car did not sell well but they only made a few hundred anyway. Now this thing probably isn't such a big deal by todays standards but as he says in the video it was a world record at the time.
@A real bisexual petrol-head remember it is a 30 year old car. Differential technology, engine output, aerodynamics and even things like dual clutch were in an infancy by comparison of todays standards. Still, what a cool car for the year it came out. Its a beast. Beautiful. Yeah but infotainment and shit back then was not big. If I am not mistaken cars only started upgrading from carburetors to fuel injectors like 10 years before this car came out. It is an element of genius for the time it was released the way a horse and carriage were like the Ferrari's of the 1500s. Lol
@A real bisexual petrol-head He was just making humor.
Nope, it was the two catalytic converters that took power down by 50bhp.
Not to mention, the rev limiter.
With both of these removed the car would hit 217 on the Nardo test track.
Also, what most of you don't realize is that despite it saying Jaguar, it's really not.
All of the work was outsourced to the TWR.
500hp from a 6 cylinder in the 90s is pretty remarkable.
Number of cylinders doesn't matter. There are very small V8 and very big inline 4. The F40 was also making 500 HP +, with a slightly smaller engine. Very good power for sub 4 liters engines.
But 1/2JZs and RB26s were doing north of 500 in the 90s weren't they?
@@alf2633 umm no?
@@alf2633 Japanese cars were "limited" to 280 HP. In some cases they have more power, but these are the official numbers.
Well they did fit a pretty big turbo on to it.
I never cared for Jaguar cars but this XJ220 is the most beautiful car Jaguar ever made. It's actually one of the all time most beautiful sports cars in my books even 25 years later.
This video makes me so happy. Old time memories playing need 4 speed on my parents pc and i loved the JXJ22. This is one of my all time favourite cars/super cars ever! It's aesthetic is just gorgeous. Thank you Doug!
This is one of the first cars I’ve seen that actually looked like it’s concept car
agree
Looks amazing...but made only the way Jaguar could - a company known for making great-looking, fast cars, but also making some very strange design decisions and cutting corners to save money.
This video makes me a little sad, thinking about how amazing it could have been, with more time, money & attention to detail.
Yeah in looks only. The fact they didn't follow through with the initial "concept" is immensely disappointing. A rear steering😱 AWD mid-engine V12 😵 would have been the JIREN of supercars.
the porsche taycan was built from a concept proto that was pretty spot on i think, dougs got a video on it
Exactly!
Style score of 7? Dang. I think the exterior holds up better than more 80s and 90s supercars.
I think the car would literally have to be a spaceship from another galaxy for Doug to be impressed.
An issue with his ratings of older cars is they're based in comparison to today's market and not the market of its time.
@A real bisexual petrol-head good point I now must ignore it and attack you personally
@A real bisexual petrol-head Did you see the part of my comment where I said "I think..."? That is my opinion. This is the comment section. People put their comments in the comment section. Doug is happy that people leave comments because it drives traffic to the video. If people agree with my comment they give it a thumbs up. Now do you understand how the internet works?
@ryan It looks like a fish, but I find it cool.
When I was a child, I built a model version of this car. It was my dream sport car when it was new. I even have a book from back in 1992 with a complete breakdown of the car. Way to go!! I would own one if I could!
I remember when this car came out. The engine is actually a race car engine. But there are NO shared components. Even the engine block had to have extra mounting bolts added so that the water pump could be bolted to it!

I had a poster of the xj220 on my wall. It was quite well-known and revered when it came out. I just think it didn’t have the staying power of other cars from the time, but there was no internet back then. Until recently, nobody talked about the cizetta maurauder or the vector w2/w8 either, but they were quite well-known.
The 217 mph run was at the Nardo oval. 217 mph calculated to something like 224 mph if tested in a straight line when the tire scrub from the corners was removed.
Correct. 217.1mph achieved.
This brings back memories of NFS 2 and hitting over 200MPH. What a car even to this day.

7:20 The windows go up that far might be an aerodynamic thing. Or maybe because of the way the window goes up on a slant, they did this to give more surface area to the glass. Anyone else thoughts?
Yeah I think aerodynamic. Look at 21:00, see the smooth continuous surface from front to back. They built the car for top speed so I think that was the intent.

Fun fact: the taillights of the XJ220 are actually a 1992 Rover 200`s taillights
Absolutely. It's so unsurprising that buyers sued Jag. Look at the interior door handles amongst other things (Jag parts bin) and all the obvious design afterthoughts (typical 'old' Jag mentality) everything was scrimped. The electric window, mirror, door design is atrocious. It's like they couldn't work it out. The team would have been sacked in Germany. And yet, it looks amazing even today. I never knew they didn't import these new - I always thought they did, because Whittlesea Jaguar, in Torrance, Calif., had one in their showroom when they were new.

most hilarious thing about the fastmasters clip: the safety car has a v12
24:34 that was so cool seeing the gasoline evaporation reflected in the paint
Interesting observation 🤔
the little CAP
I was wondering what that was!
Now there is high definition for you.
I’m a guy who had Lambo posters on my wall as a kid. This is the most beautiful car I have ever seen. I’ve been a car enthusiast my whole life. At this point not many cars excite me. This one makes me emotional. It is the 90s mid engine exotic style done to perfection.
Another very thorough video, maybe a little too much so at times but entertaining nonetheless. Beautiful car, with astonishing power numbers from that V6. Would like to have known a bit more about the engine. Also would like to hear what the exhaust sounds like from outside the car. Surprised the car got such a low overall score, but I would still buy one. This would still beat many current sports cars, and looks like a genuine supercar. Also the fact that it can do over 200 mph stock, with only 6 cylinders, is quite an accomplishment.
The engine started life as a rallye engine! It was a N/A 3.0 V6 producing 440 bhp and was used in the metro 6r4 rally car! Jag later bought the rights to the engine and started developing it, it was bored out to 3.5 litres and all internals replaced the two garret t66 turbos were fitted! It found its way into jags xjr10/11 race cars where it was producing just under 1000bhp and when jag decided to ditch the V12 they were developing for the 3.5 v6 they had to detune it to 542bhp to meet emmisions regs and increase reliability.
Thanks for this Doug
Next up, Maserati MC12 ?
Yes please
I'd love to see him review a Pagani Zonda.
Next up Corvette c fucking 8 PLEASE
He reviewed Pagani earlier, but it was Huayra. Still, it would be nice to see review of Zonda on his channel. But it's gonna be hard to find one, because only slightly more than 100 units were made and it wasnt't officially offered in US.
My dream car a mc12 in carbon blue
You totally **TOTALLY** should've pulled up to a Jag dealer for an oil change.
How many Jaguar dealerships would there be in the states? Would’ve been sick though.
@@PlumBoss84 There are a lot of Jag dealers here. Probably more here than in the UK.
My dream car as a kid
PlumBoss84 you’d be surprised mang. Not as weird as you think, there are McLaren dealers in smaller Canadian cities like it’s no big deal or something. Not the same make obviously but wherever enough people will buy a jaguar/Land Rover/Suzuki/whatever, you’ll find its respective dealership there
@@jshlst McLaren dealers in smaller canadian cities lol? There are only 3 in To MTL and VAN...
I used to love the XJ220 when I was little and saw it in posters in which it was the car against a background. Then I grew up, the Internet happened, and I finally saw one in action. And noticed what those colored backgrounds hid: it's a really large and weighty car. It's like they made a Grand Tourer on a supercar envelope, and it doesn't work as either, it's not really supersporty, but it's not really comfortable as a Grand Tourer.
These days, I like the XJR-15 more. And now that's the most unknown supercar out there.
Anyway I really think they nailed the silhouette of the car. It's a Jaguar that looks like a real 🐆 crouched. The XJ220 is what I think exotic cars should look like.
Best looking car ever designed IMO. And primarily favor 1960's British and Italian sports cars!
The chassis twisted when they tried twin turboing it. It worked fine in the transit. Nice motor
Doug is the type of guy to just forget about cnc motors and call every new dealership “ the best dealership he ever been into “.
"With the best inventory of any dealership"
*car's brakes lock up and loses control"
"one of the many QuirKs"
you shoud see the top gear intro for the reliant robin XD
Ahhh. One of the flagships of the Need for Speed franchise. No doubt a favorite.
This remains my favorite supercar ever made - were in a position to write a blank check for something like this (and even then you might still never find a seller these days), this would be at the top of my list.
So happy that Doug creates his videos without any unnecessary background music, and ridiculous camera shots. No bullshit, straight to the point! :)
Until the headlights reveal
Once upon a time, in the parking lot of a LA Fitness…
He is enthusiastic enough, but I couldn't go pass the 94 th time he said "jaguar xj two twenty"
Facts! It's all about the car.
The pedals could have spelled J A G. They missed the opportunity.
Or 220
You said JAG, couldn't help but hearing Jeremy clarkson saying it
Grey 420 Jaaaaaaaaaggg
would have cost too much just like adding a sun screen to the roof. Lol.
Or XJ
Back in the day at Jeffs's shed in Melbourne when I was working on the motor show I was asked to move an XJ220 (which was in the way) so I did and took it for a scorch. Well I am not easily scared of fast cars but that is a Road Rocket, especially back then it not only looked the part but it performed better than expected
Incidentally, they look better in RED and go faster too
I saw one of these driving on the motorway in England & it was travelling in convoy with about ten Jaguar E Types!
"It's gets so damn hot because of the... thing... "
One of the first signs of heatstroke, Doug.
Now Doug needs to review the other failed super car of the 90’s...the Bugatti EB110.
I was coming to say the same thing :)
It failed cause it was ugly as hell XD
He can review mine, if he so desires!
@@comeberza thism... *THIS* isnt?
Neither of those cars were fails. Look at what they are worth now.
I'm seeing this video again and I keep my statement, this is my favorite Jaguar.
Doug said the trunk is small, well it's not a car designed to carry baggages in there, as he said, only small items. This car was the fastest production car for a brief moment, many people says the McLaren F1 was the fastest, which is true but, they offenlly forget the Bugatti EB110S, it was the fastest car after the XJ220 and before the F1. That's something I forgot to say in the comment I made 4 years ago when I saw this video for the first time. How I said, this is my favorite Jaguar, the beautiful XJ220
the test drive 5 car list was so good, that they put in this car on the game, still one of my favorites supercars.
