A little more science would be helpful: 1. Starting temperature. 2. Time immersed. 3. Ending temperature. Advanced science: 1-3 without appliance for comparison. It is clear that you are using it as an additive to the portable's heater, but understanding the actual impact of the immersion heater is not at all clear. Saying it cut the time by 6-7 hours is only helpful understanding my previous suggestion of science 1-3.

It will melt the side of your tub if you’re not careful ..

I have an immersion heater that I use in a pinch when camping. I have a portable shower unit and an old 5 gallon bucket (got it free from the grocery store's bakery area - I think mine contained frosting). I can fill the bucket up with water, put the immersion heater in and in a little while I can take a nice, hot shower! Immersion heaters are definitely something that requires being SAFE with it (water and electricity...just be very careful), but they work really well!

Does it not burn the lining of the tub? If not, how? I would think the metal is very hot.

The ones I have say you should submerge it before plugging in.
