The best save I’ve ever seen! Better than Banks v Pele imo. I’m 40 but have seen the 1970 WC games which I loved. The save by Montgomery is unbelievable. I’m a Chelsea fan so I don’t have a dog in this fight but what a game!! Old skool footie I love it!!! COYB 💙

In the history of the FA Cup. You won't see a more emotional team celebration than this one.
I was in the Leeds supporters club at the time of this Match. I couldn't get a ticket so watched on TV. I expected a Leeds win of course, but have to say you could rightly be proud of your teams performance that day. Your defence was magnificent. Dave Watson seemed to be everywhere across the back line breaking up Leeds attacks. And that double save, if only Lorimer had aimed for the roof of the net. I still think the challenge in the box on Bremner should have been a penalty. That said it was a superb effort by your boys, and you deserved the glory. Still someone was always going to pay for Leeds loss that day, so off I went to Elland road some 10 or so days later to watch Leeds (3rd) play Arsenal (2nd) in the last game of the season. Leeds won 6-1, hit the woodwork 3 times, and had 2 attempts cleared off the line. It was some game, but not much consolation. If only that performance happened at Wembley. Anyway, we can't change history, only enjoy it. My best wishes to Sunderland, team, connections and supporters, in the hope that the coming season brings you more joy, and success.
Good comment Malcolm . I too thought Dave Watson was excellent that day . Had bremner gone down I think the pen would've been given , definate nudge .
For me this kind of comments are more valuable than any comment that we can make in retrospective nothing more valuable than the pov of someone who was there living the match in the context of those times
@@alvarogastello5501 Thank you. I was 15 then. Sat with my mum on a sofa, watching. My mum knitting. Montgomery saves the diving header from Cherry and the ball is heading towards Lorimer a few yards out, and he wont miss an open goal. I'm over the back of the sofa celebrating and cheering and running through the house. I come back to the sofa and my mum, still knitting simply said..."He missed...I was stunned, and then awed by the double save. A great game, and a fun memory to share with you. Sheffield United Fan. I remember watching and enjoying this FA Cup Final on the television as a very young kid back in 1973 and here I am again in 2024 watching and enjoying it just as much as I did back then. This is when the FA Cup meant so much and it was every fans dream to go to Wembley and see their team presented with the FA Cup and to run around Wembley with the Cup. A brilliant FA Cup Final, well done Sunderland thanks for the memory.

50 years ago me ,me brother and a few friends had gathered together in our friend's home as they had just got a colour tv in , to watch this match. Nerve-wracking to say the least for this 11 year old back then. I've watched it many times since and am looking forward to today reliving it 50 years on . Not in me friends house 😂.here in sunny gran canaria if my memory is right it was a sunny day in town that day when we ran out into the streets after the broadcast was all over and had our own game ( jumpers for goalposts ...almost) .Thanks to these heroes of 73..and good luck to our lads on monday .We are Sunderland til we die and ever after.. ❤
I was a 11 yrs old on that day and i dont think theres ever been a time before or since that set this City on fire. it was incredible how it lifted the spirits of the Sunderland people. Its easily the greatest upset in football history and deserves a Movie made about this.
Ninety minutes of end-to-end attacking football and spectacular saves by the Sunderland goalkeeper Montgomery to preserve a true triumph. THAT is what the game should be all about.
Really enjoyed that. Admittedly the first time I’ve ever watched it in full. First half was much more closely matched than I expected but the second is exactly how I imagined, a 44 minute Leeds barage. Such a performance to hold on for the win!

Colchester was the biggest & Leeds again, I mean 4th Div, I just couldn't believe it would be possible, but if you really got at Leeds & niggled them, they could buckle at times.
The FA cup was definitely an all day event in those days. What with its s Knockout and cameras at the team's hotels and on the coaches. Interviews with celebrity fans and both of the teams road to the final great days...
Jimmy Hill's last FA Cup Final on ITV as a fortnight after this match Jimmy Hill would leave ITV for the BBC after the Home Internationals making his BBC debut in the European Cup Final Ajax v Juventus and would make his BBC presenting debut the next week in the Poland v England World Cup Qualifier and the start of the following season would become the presenter of Match Of The Day

The greatest decade of the FA Cup. When that day in May rolled around it seemed bigger than the World CUp and the Olympics combined. This was one of the best, and some of those Sunderland haircuts are all time legends of cup final history.
I was a 14 year old leeds fan from Australia sat up in the wee hours to watch this we lost but I think Sunderland's destiny was written in the stars that year !
Billy Bremner really was a snidey piece of work. Always leaving something on the man but hated it when someone gave him some back.
I enjoyed watching this. Sunderland had just 3 shots on target to Leeds' 6, but won the day. Great battling and defending.

I am 60 now but watched this match on our first ever colour television. We lived in Somerset though my dad was a Mackem though for some reason he always told us he supported Rangers, I never understood that. I started supporting Sunderland when I was 9 and was the only Sunderland fan in my school. I won 50p in a bet with a Leeds fan at school. It was my first ever bet too. Ha'way The Lads, STID FTM

That year I was at the Newcastle game when they were defeated by Luton , and l remember one of my mates who was a Luton fan telling me that more often than not who ever beats Luton will go on to win the FA Cup.l was living in S Shields at the time and watched the game on the colour telly at my digs.l put a a pound on Sunderland and an old Toony in the bookies round the corner told me that l would be better off backing whatever he had at the 3 o clock at Thirsk.

At that time,Sunderland were bigger than Leeds United as they had won eight titles to Leeds United's four titles and this was a fantastic cup final which Sunderland won,good friends!!!:-D
Sunderland were undoubtably the underdogs in this game, considering Leeds were one of, if not, THE best team in the country and Sunderland were in the 2nd division.
Sunderland have only won six first division league titles, whilst Leeds have won three.
