First football match ever watched living in Australia at time! I was 9 years old remember getting up earky hours with family to watch it! Had a soft spot for Leeds ever since! Moved back to England in 1973!Been a Gillingham fan since 1976!
Fitting that Leeds won the centenary cup final (1972) and the last ever league championship (1992). 24 years later, George Graham would be appointed as manager of Leeds.
I'd always though that Mick had injured his arm crossing the ball for the goal but I was only very little then. I do remember it was his cross for a terrific goal to win the cup though. That was the Centenary Final I believe. 🙂
Thank you so much for putting this on here. Brilliant game and one which I've watched for research for a new book I'm writing with a great friend about Leeds United and Castleford Rugby League Club and all the venues they've both played. The Story of Venues, featuring Castleford Tigers and Leeds United. We're hoping to get it released around the second week in November. Thanks again. Mick Jones, what a hero! We are Leeds. MOT
That's when leeds were a great team not like load of crap now first football kit I had iwas 6 years old there were the days if the old leeds team when the facup ment somthing on Saturday no one was about all watching the fa cup big day
@maxwellboyne2770 Upon reflection, your's is a fair point. Thanks. I suppose I was still seething with anger when I wrote that. My anger blinded my sense of perspective.
Going up to the royal box to collect the trophy had been a tradition at the Old Wembley for decades. The national team did the same thing 6 years earlier to collect the World Cup.

Just when the cup final meant something not like today😢

Greta game, between two great teams. Leeds in particular were majestic
Leeds only had a days rest and played again on the Monday and were going for the Double but lost to one to wolves.
This final never gets talked about. Almost as if there was no final in 1972.

Sounds interesting. Is there a link between Leeds Utd and Castleford RLFC beyond common fans?
Allan Clarke my all time biggest hero getting the winning goal, I've still got the 1972 cup final silk scarf & banner
Like football, but my love for it died with the demise of the long sleeved shirt.
This is classic history which I lived in the classic heartland, the capital of British football as a spectator.
49:20.
Those players loved Leeds United with real passion. Unlike the mercenaries of today.
What a marvellous game and such a moving moment with wounded man climbing to collect his medal. Wonderful.
1:07:51 As a Leeds fan nothing tops this. What a goal Sniffer!

Leeds News,
Thanks very much for supplying this tremendous Cup Final. Two really committed teams and a very scrupulous Referee!

I weep when I think of this magnificent eleven. I weep even more when I think of those donkeys who got us relegated. in '23.

Remember Arsenal we’re double Winners year before both great sides
First FA Cup final i remember.
The days when supporters of the losing team stayed to applaud the victors. These days the stadium is half empty two minutes after the final whistle!
Just bought my Alan Clarke replica shirt from this cup final... Up the mighty whites!!
Poor Mick Jones !
I never understood why the fuss over Charlie George.
He was the bollocks just a quiet game brother
Barnet , funny how his hair is !
Does the Queen consider herself too high and mighty to go down onto the pitch to meet the players herself.

Charlie George laughing after a foul he committed ! Arrogant arse !
Attendance for the 1972 FA Cup Final was a sellout crowd of 100,000 fans.
