It's amazing that people who remember this match think they saw it live on TV in colour. In fact there was no colour TV in the UK at the time. They just knew that England were playing in red that day. A minority would have seen a few highlights in colour at the cinema a week or so later, but most would have to wait for the 10th or even the 25th anniversary to see a colour version on TV. I'm not sure the entire match is available in colour.

It could be a game of sportsmanship and gamesmanship back then because there simply wasn’t the money in the game as there is now. The only reason they do it is part of an overall attempt to get any competitive advantage possible because winning or losing means such a huge amount of money now. I like the sportsmanship that he led his teammates to display: Even after losing a World Cup final, instead of being sore losers, the Germans waved at the fans with class and dignity. You rarely see such display of class and character from the losing side these days. They repeat the same thing after they beat Uruguay 1-0 and became 3-rd at the 1970 World Cup by carrying the Mexican flag over their shoulders and thanking the local fans in Mexico. By the way, despite what my name says. I am not German and my favorite team is Holland, but you have to give credit when it is due.

It was - I remember watching the match on black/ white television. However, a couple of months after the Final, a colour film was shown in the cinemas about the whole 1966 World Cup, with England's victory over Germany obviously the highlight at the end. For those wondering why this sounds like a WW2 commentary there's a good reason. The commentator was Bob Danvers-Walker who worked for Pathe for ages and had narrated loads of WW2 Pathe films as well. Remember even in the 60s many people didn't have telly (we didn't, I watched the final it at a neighbours) so relied on cinema newsreels for visuals.

This is how England should be playing. I love the passing style and the sportsmanship. England has definitely changed. I hope the England team sees this to see how they used to play. It’s a great strategy used by this team and I would have loved to see this team play with my own eyes

@@lasimies4142 I agree football definitely has changed but this game was very well played by England and there strategy was amazing. I believe it could be used in modern football to win games.

I still wish stiles had just buried the 3rd 'goal' and killed the debate. It was on a plate for him.

No better opposition than the Germans in the final...if you win you know you've earned it...the Germans never give up
