I was 12 when Sunderland won the cup. It's funny, I could tell you the finalists and scores of all the 70's finals, but would struggle name one of the last 10. The good old days. When winning the FA Cup was almost the same as winning the league.

Surely a day when everyone outside Leeds was a Sunderland fan. And one which epitomised the sheer incomparable magic of the FA Cup.
Furthermore, being a Wolves fan who had seen his team beaten by Leeds in the semi final, it was all the more more satisfying to see Sunderland achieve the, seemingly, impossible. One can only imagine the pride their fans must have felt on that truly unforgettable occasion.

I was 17 then and on that memorable day I was working in John Colliers (the window to watch) at 96 High Street West in Sunderland. We had a little b&w TV beside the measuring table as we did not really expect many customers and the main town centre was quite quiet. So did not believe it when some customers actually came in to be served, and of course being the junior that came down to me. However, once that game was won the atmosphere and noise in the town centre was amazing never to be forgotten with cars driving round blowing their horns hanging out the windows. What a day - was proud to be a Makem.

No one under about 40 knows what it meant to win the FA cup at the time. Young people won't believe it but the FA Cup final was probably bigger than the European Cup final at the time. It was an enormous ocasion which dominated the thoughts of any team which reached the last 8 or 16. A player could become an instant and eternal hero. A manager could become a legend. Now it is an afterthought for the big clubs. Then it was the be all and end all.

I am a Fulham supporter and well remember the dissapointment when we lost to West Ham in the 75 final. 38 years later I am still waiting to see a Fulham captain lift the cup. I also wish they would stop playing the final on the last day of premiership fixtures it should go back to being played when all domestic games have been completeted

The world stopped spining on f a cup final day and everyone watched it.Its so sad to see this great competition loose alot of its prestige ,
I loved going to all the different grounds and seeing all the replays ,and the semi finals at different grounds and reaching Wembley the holy grail of football for the final
Semi finals being played at Wembley has taken alot of the shine off the final at Wembley ,I remember utd having loads of replays in the years 62-66,and I went to everyone only watching one final in 63,they reached semi final every year in them five years ,I lived for football in them days wouldn't go today with a free ticket even if they picked me up and brought me back
As supporters in them days we had the best of football,we didn't have a load of mercenary prima Donnas from different countries We had players who played with their hearts for their teams and supporters ,not just for money
