What an amazing double save against the Cup holders and best team in England. I'm a Newcastle fan, but you have to say Jim Montgomery was a brilliant goalkeeper.
Bob Stokoe running to Jim Montgomery at the final whistle is one of the most emotional things I've ever seen, and I'm a Spurs fan and Cockney, so have no axe to grind (although who didn't hate Leeds at the time?). It chokes me right up. We were all Sunderland fans that afternoon.
apart from Leeds fans. Leeds always sportingly congratulated if they lost. Leeds were the top team but had this jinx that followed them. Colchester was THE BIGGEST upset of the '70s FAC with a full strength Leeds side.
I'm Spurs and remember this match like yesterday. Leeds were a juggernaut then. My best memory of that era was Alfie Cohn's dribble that helped keep us up a year later.
In the days when the FA Cup Final was special , the only live game on TV , apart from England v Scotland , 100,000 at the old Wembley , the long walk from the tunnel to the Royal Box . The atmosphere at the old Wembley was unbelievable , much better than at the new Wembley . I was a Sunderland supporter that day because i hated Leeds , and i sat watching with my Dad and even he could not believe how Montgomery kept the ball out .
@@Lord_Hillcrest Two very similar reflex saves - but what tips the scales for me is that, unlike Banks, Montgomery was not even on his feet when he made the diving save. Plus; Lorimer was closer to the goal than Pele was - and he booted it really hard, so the ball was travelling alot faster than Peles header was.
@@71poiuytrewq I have absolutely no problem with your opinion , it was as you say an incredible save . Not the 1st save however , most keepers wouldve got to that . If you notice on the 2nd save Montgomery changed direction mid flight , it was truly amazing . The banks save has the edge for me , the way he had to scamper across his goal and literally get to it was one thing but to scrape it out of the net was perfection to a perfect downward header .
I’m a Newcastle fan. This is still the best double save I’ve ever seen. Better than Banks/Pele. I remember watching this as a 9 year old back in ‘73, great memories 🏆
You might be right but I disagree..Banks was further away when Pele made a peach of a connection. Banks also put the ball over for a corner while the second of the double saves Montgomery made, kept the ball in play. That second save was the best in FA Cup history though.
Without a doubt the greatest double save ever I remember watching this cup final and nearly smashed my head on the ceiling when jimmy Montgomery produced this !
He was always a top keeper through the 60s and 70s Like a lot of keepers he peaked in his mid 30s Best save I've ever seen Ten times better than the Banks one they always bore us to death with Jim should be SIR Jim
Still don't know how he did it, he was still on the deck when Lorimer smashed it into the open goal. He'll always be remembered for this, I watched him regularly as a kid in the 60s from behind the goal and he was always consistent. I saw him in Dobbies in Birtley a couple of months ago and he still looks fit enough to play today. Go on Monty, Sunderland through and through.
Leeds were a dirty, evil bunch of bastards. How/why the FA didn't constantly fine them or deduct points defeats me. An absolute disgrace to the game of football.
I'm nearly 62 years old and I've still no idea how he kept that out.....never get fed up seeing that.....it seems to get even better when you haven't seen it for a while
Yup, football is awful now. These carpet pitches & a big ping pong ball for doing silly tricks. Today's players wouldn't last 5 mins with proper tackling. You get sent off now for doing a perfect sliding tackle where you get the ball first but because the little didums player falls over now it's a red card. It's more like basketball defending now. Don't watch it now, just CZcams on matches including the 90s, the last decade of proper footy.
Amazing time it was Monty's most important save i would say, it was crazy back in Sunderland after that match, it was like being world champions which were in 1895 !.
That's the late great Lorimer at five yards with an open goal ahead of him and a goalkeeper not standing on his feet. How the hell is that not a goal? Incredible save that was.
In the days when playing for Sunderland meant something. This team will always be remembered. What a day. I've got to say as a sunderland fan the Leeds team were fantastic, they were my second favourite team and still are.
Was he competing with Shilton, Clemence, Banks and Bonetti at the time? It was a difficult time to be a good keeper, and a little while after the same for Phil Parkes (although he was always better than Joe Corrigan, England's 3rd keeper).
@@CIMAmotor England had the best half a dozen goalkeepers in the world at that time - and if you extend that to Britain, there was Pat Jennings as well . . . very different from today.
It's also difficult to unseat the first choice keeper, particularly at international level. What may have gone against Montgomery was the fact he played for a second division team. Didn't Brian Clough sign him to be Shilton's number 2 at Nottingham Forest?
Forget the famous Banks save ,this was out off this world ,that's coming from an arsenal fan who was at Hillsboro to suffer a 21 loss In the semi final to Sunderland who we were expected to beat
@@a.m.armstrong8354 it was the end of a good period for arsenal ,it went downhill after that,2 years later we had Terry mancini in the side for fucks sake

@@domrampello1743 It's about reflex. In that moment the goalie only thinks to get something onto the ball. Banks' tipping over the bar killed that attack, that's why it's the better save.
Leeds ere exceptional dueing that era . They finished runner up in 11 different competitions...often through bad luck...or corruption by officials.
